I like a lot of genres, but top of the list would be "new wave american metal"
Stuff like Lamb of God or Machine Head
second would probably be symphonic death metal. Winds of Plague and the like.

Well, always good "Ye Olde Metale" like Iron Maiden, but in terms of subgenre, it is the One True Metal - Power Metal. God damn beautiful lyrics, proper focus on vocals and I like the effect achieved by keyboards coupled with metal instruments.

Swedish power metal kings, Sabaton, are the masters of this, and they sing about war, which makes me very happy indeed.

Excellent music video, and a very good song.

See also, one their most popular ones ;

Pretty much this. Iron Maiden and Sabaton are my 2 fav bands so ;).

I don't really listen to metal anymore, but I sure as hell used to!
Favourite bands (I still listen to) are

Chimaira:

DevilDriver:

Broke my nose last time I saw Devildriver, and it's still a bit crooked now, but luckily for me they will perform in Eindhoven 28th November, so I can get it beaten straight ;)

Power Metal mostly. They're insanely cheesy and juvenile, but they're uplifting, energetic and most of them are just plain fun to listen to, especially if they really go over the top.

Either Gothic metal (such as Moonspell, Deathstars or Night Wish)
Black Metal (such as Beheamoth and Immortal)
Or Mathematical Metal (such as Meshuggah, Periphery or Tesseract)

Most Metal is good though. But really These genres are my favorite. I used to love Thrash above all. But now... not so much. (still good but)

maybe its just a progression thing... Starting to like other affiliated genres more these days (such as Punk etc)
I kinda want to get into Gothic Metal
what would you say is teh bestest Gothic Metal band =D?

This is quite hard.
When I first got into metal, gothic metal and nu metal were probably my favourites.

At the moment I'm really into metalcore and post hardcore (I know that's not metal but they overlap a lot), and slightly into post metal and progressive metal. I really like Deftones style alternative metal though.

I'm thinking Underoath-style metalcore and Glassjaw-style post hardcore, not the generic over produced scene stuff.

My favourite bands are mostly from really different sub genres though so I don't have a strict taste.

I really like mathcore and hardcore punk as well. Converge, Gallows, etc

Deathstars are industrial metal, they're just dressed up as goths. Nightwish are more power metal.

Hmm.. I listen to a few different genres, mostly I choose music suitable to what I am doing.

Melodic Death Metal is my favorite genre by far, and will listen to this when I'm just chilling.. But I listen to a lot of Doom/Gothic/Symphonic when I drive/study etc.. It calms me down.. :p

If I am working out or something else aggressive I like to start up with something brutal.. Death Metal, Blackened Death Metal, Norwegian Black Metal, some Grindcore bands are pretty cool also.

I'm a big fan of melodic death jazz fusion metal. Opeth is the only metal band I listen to anymore.

Nah, that's not true. I still love my female vocal power metal, my folk metal and my... Duran Duran metal. 'Cause Orgy is heavy enough to count, right? Oh, and cello metal. I like cello metal.

I listen to more trance and actual folk nowadays. The metal comes in phases.

EDIT: Wait a second. Does Dream Theater count? Or King's X? I always seem to assume in the wrong direction on this, getting flamed for listening to soft shit when I bring them up as heavy, then getting flamed by softies for claiming their favorite band fits into that awful metal category.

You know what? Fuck it, I'm just gonna name drop.

I like Korpiklaani, Orgy, Opeth, Blind Guardian, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Symphony X, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Apocalyptica, Buckethead, Joe Satriani (and his many famous children), most things by Les Claypool. If it sounds kinda like those bands, I'm fairly likely to have heard, enjoyed, and forgotten it.

Mostly anything except Gothic and Black. Gothic for obvious reasons and Black because they're like the hipsters of the Metal world. You're not a "true" Black Metal band if you leave the underground scene.
I don't see the obvious reason for disliking Gothic Metal. For the most part it is just Symphonic metal with Clear Gothic vocals.

Steel. Well that is if you mean mainstream iron. I also like retro stuff such as copper or bronze. Silver is also nice but expansive.

My favorite is probably Nu-Metal. Slipknot. OLD Slipknot. Doesn't get much better.

That or Prog-Metal. TOOL would be my favorite there.

For the most part I don't care about genres or sub-genres though. I like and dislike bands of the same genre that most of my friends argue sound the same.
