Power metal, melodic death metal, old school metal
Basically dragonforce, blind guardian, megadeth, iron maiden etc.

I think their most emotional song for me has to be Final solution, cliffs of Gallipoli or purple heart, epic beyond belief. and your right they express the cost of war and the damage done to people countries and humanity.Octorok said:Nearly ALL of their songs are exceptionally powerful, and at times (and this is rare in metal) moving.Zebidizy said:sabaton are an awesome band, they are one of the few bands out there that get better with each album. Screaming eagles is such a powerful song.
Songs about really tragic events, like the Warsaw uprising of 1944, and even the Holocaust.
Seriously, people reading this thread - listen to Sabaton, even if power metal isn't your thing, give a couple of their songs a try.
It's not all tanks and explosions - they express real emotion about the sheer scale of death and destruction of our conflicts, as well as fiercely supporting the "right guy" (they are not pro-war or Neo-Nazis).
Yeah, I personally lover their later avant-garde work as well as their Black Metal Trilogy (I have no idea why Kveldssanger is part of said trilogy), but then again I have a pretty wide range of interests (I don't mean to sound arrogant, just that most people see you as a little demented if you tell them you like a bit of Al Green in between your Death and Cynic XD) and I can understand it's not for everyone, as one Metal Archives user put it 'you either like electronic music or you don't.' I'm really only starting to look into more Black Metal beyond the big second wave names to be honest, so I'm still digging through bands to find more stuff I'll like. By the way, have you heard of May Result?:AbyssalSanhedrin said:Ah yes you can't go wrong with the first couple of Ulver albums (funnily enough your avatar caught my eye whilst I was browsing the forums earlier). I've tried so many times to appreciate their later, more avant-garde material, which many assure is me phenomenal, but it seems my brain is hard-wired for metal and little else unfortunately.
I'm really liking the music hear, nice blast beat drums and the riffs have quite the crunchy, thrashy feel to them. Got to be honest, I'm not too hot on the vocalist, sounds a little too breathy for me, if you know what I mean, but not too much of a big deal and I otherwise really liked the track. Thanks for the recommendation.AbyssalSanhedrin said:Cheers for the rec though, in return may I suggest the band from my avatar; Blasphemy
You know at one time it was called the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.chstens said:German Power Metal and Old British Heavy Metal. Those are, objectively, the only subgenres of metal worth mentioning.
Also, that moment in Price of a Mile, where the songs kicks it up a notch and he asks, "Tell me, what is the price of a mile?". Really sad stuff.Zebidizy said:I think their most emotional song for me has to be Final solution, cliffs of Gallipoli or purple heart, epic beyond belief. and your right they express the cost of war and the damage done to people countries and humanity.
Agreed on everything, except for the black metal. Can't stand any kind of black metal.Zebidizy said:FOLK METAL!!! or Power metal...or melodic death metal...or Atmospheric black metal =p
neither can I but the atmospheric stuff is amazing, kinda like folk metal but abit darker. but yes Folk Metal is the best that and Power Metal specifically Blind guardian!!WaysideMaze said:Agreed on everything, except for the black metal. Can't stand any kind of black metal.
Folk Metal FTW
No but this sounds pretty damn good, I'll have to investigate these guys further. I'm not normally a fan of synths in black metal but they integrate them with just enough subtlety that they don't sound cheesy or overwrought. Cheers for the heads-up.OmniscientOstrich said:By the way, have you heard of May Result?:
Glad also you got a kick from Blasphemy. I know what you mean about the vocals as well, they sort of fall between two stylistic stools (death and black) and if I had to single out the bands' (relative, I still think they're great!) weakness they would be it.OmniscientOstrich said:I'm really liking the music hear, nice blast beat drums and the riffs have quite the crunchy, thrashy feel to them. EvilPicnic said:I like variety in my metal (generally old-school NWOBHM or progressive death with a hint of jazz a la Opeth or Ephel Duath) and was lucky to be at the Sonisphere festival in Knebworth this summer:
Metallica
Slayer
Opeth
Arch Enemy
Mastodon
Slipknot
Cavalera Conspiracy
Motorhead
Gojira
Firewind
Diamond Head
Tesseract
In Flames
Anthrax
Megadeth
...ALESTORM!
Bill Bailey
etc
Haven't seen a line-up like that in a long time: pretty much 3 days of metal heaven-on-earth. Could only have been better if Dio had risen again.
[EDIT]
Also, everyone should <3 Van Canto
