I use an axe. After upgrading one handed so that axes do a great amount of bleeding damage, i'm able to leave foes that are on their knee to bleed out while I kill their friends. Might not sound useful, but its nice to not have to worry about that enemy getting off his knee and attacking me in the back while I'm fighting his friend.

You put in claws, but not the good old bow?

I'm playing a few characters at the moment, but my favourite has so far been the bow. Stealth kills are fun. I voted sword though, as sword and shield is my second favourite.

Started with a two-handed axe preference because hacking things to pieces is about as uncomplicated as it gets, but later in the game, I started going up against enemies that took fifty stamina-devouring swings to kill if they weren't in the mood to turn around and box me to death in seconds (despite having awesome perks and the best equipment available), so I decided melee was for the birds. I abandoned my level 34 barbarian halfway through the game and rolled a stealth+archery character.

Ironically, choosing the "walk softly and slowly, then stop and shoot" tactics has allowed me to clear dungeons about three times faster than if I'd charged in wearing a battleship's worth of health-fortifying armor and swinging a flaming axe that would let a lumberjack one-shot a forest, because instead of having protracted, exhausting battles, I can just drop entire groups with sneak crits from my pimped-out bow before they can decide which direction the arrows are coming from. I don't even touch my health pots until the game drops a scripted and pissed-off enemy right on my head.

Aela's gonna be delta tango foxtrot on arrival, which is fine by me because I'm a sucker for women in warpaint.

A bow is pretty much the exact opposite of a melee weapon.

Also, I'm already a master at Archery, and as I stated in my OP, I'm looking for a new, up close and personal option, and wanted to hear why everyone preferred their choice.

Hand to Hand, bring any heavy, sharp, scary weapon you can find, the end result will always be the same. You, on the ground, with a fist-sized hole in your face.

I am Argonian.
I am Dovahkiin.
I am Hansinkdu, Dragon Puncher!

Dual wield with swords, although I did spend some time experimenting with a two handed axe. It was pretty badass, but I'm liking the dual wield thing better.

Guess which author inspired me to pick these two weapon combinations, and win a cookie!

I rolled as a Khajitain Assassin Theif, so daggers it was, and bitches just wouldn't die. So then I rolled as Eddard Stark, with a huge sword, and bitches just died all the time. Then I rolled as Legolas, with a nice bow, and I have to say that Bow was my favourite, but that isn't melee, so Im gonna have to say dagger, as I spent a good 50+ hours using them

I almost always go for swords, it is too much of a fantasy staple for me to pass up. It is also very balanced usually in terms of speed/power.
I would go for unarmed also if it wasn't so blah in Skyrim.

I started out using Sword/magic.

But now that I finally got my hands on 2 katanas, I run around dual-wielding them. Is it the most effective strategy? No. Do I feel like a badass though? Hell. Yes.

There are katanas!? Where!?

Ebony Blade and Akaviri swords. Akaviri weapons are rare as shit, but you can find a few in the course of the Main Quest. At least one, possibly more.

im kind of a spell sword, use magic at a distance, switch right hand to sword if weak enemy gets close, switch left to another sword if its a really difficult enemy.

When i was younger, Raj enjoy combat.
Would run headfirst at things, greatsword flailing, yelling about how fat their mother was.

Half the time, Raj was nude too! Not by choice. Hard to get dressed in morning when dragon breathing fire into window.

But Raj nude is for best. He knows, women dig love-handles! Tell me, "Oh Raj! Your belly is so soft! Want nothing more then rub it!"
Raj knows what ladies want. Ladies want Raj. Cannot help it.

How Raj met Wife Mjoll!

..... Ok, have some regrets when comes to drunken nudity in public.
