I signed up a new account just to comment on this thread.

I think the Ending to this game Sucked and made the whole game serve 0 purpose. If Jack had more of a roll in the game it may have made more since.

If you finished the game and bought a paper, you would of seen that Ross retired to a cabin near Lake Don Julio. I spent about an hour and a half looking for any signs of Ross and his Wife. To let the game end this way with out even letting Jack get vengeance for what the Government did to the Marstons is criminal its self.

This reminds me of a few GREAT movies that have Moronic, Disappointing, and ?What was the director smoking?? endings.

The best thing for Rockstar right now, and I mean RIGHT NOW. Is to come out with some type of statement. That they are looking into these complaints of the players and are looking into a solution and or a patch. With out this kind of statement will result in lost revenue due to people buying used RDR games.[/quote

The final stranger mission involves Jack killing Ross, learn something about the game before slagging it off idiot.

John. I spent the entire game building respect and admiration for the guy, only to be introduced to his fey twin.

However, I did like one added little (painful) twist they went for with Jack: once you truly complete the game by avenging John, you'll eventually realize that Jack became exactly what John was trying to help him avoid, which really drove home the "revenge is an endless cycle" message that hung so prominently in the air throughout the game. No doubt Jack will eventually make enemies (if he hadn't already made tons by offing Ross), and they'll want to kill him, and then his children blah blah blah I think you get the idea.

I like the way Jack looks better (younger John essentially), but John wins in every other respect. Btw, the guy that voices Jack is in No Country For Old Men:

As for the ending itself, I found it very dramatic and emotional, but it essentially made your entire journey pointless. I know John's death is supposed to represent the death of the West and everything, but the fact is, that Jack ends up an outlaw just like John, something John fought and gave up his life to try and prevent. Hell, they could've ended it Gran Torino style, where the main guy gets shot and killed, but still have a happy ending afterward reflecting on the guy's sacrifice or something. And honestly, I didn't even find the true end that satisfying, because to me, I never found the duels that fun, and killing him in that manner just took all the satisfaction out of it for me. I'd had preferred to have took out both of his legs, then executed him, or at least something better than that. Oh well, I'm still curious if they're going to make a sequel though.

Quite an accomplishment to get an emotional reaction from me out of a videogame.
You haven't played alot of videogames i see.
Yeah, that's the reason, and not that most games do not illicit any emotional reaction from me. I forgot, every videogame has an emotionally tormenting and incredibly well delivered story. I should be on the floor crying alllll the time. yawn

John is by far the better character in the game. Like some other people have said, Jack seemed forced. While John seemed like that natural badass cowboy. After the game ended and I realized I had to play as Jack. I thought okay, fine. Ten minutes of looking at his stupid face I threw on the bandana.

Without trying to play Devil's Advocate, I liked Jack better. The thing that kind of annoyed me with John throughout the story is that I felt like an asshole whenever I did something really horribly bad (like slaughtering Blackwater, or destroying some rancher's homestead.) and not only that, but it didn't make any sense for John to do those things. Except for the forced sequences with the Mexican Army ravaging a few villages, John really does not get his hands very dirty, mainly because he's a good guy. I have no reason to rape and pillage as John, because he's already done all of it and decided that he didn't like it, and left it.

As Jack, I have less than no issues with slaughtering a small army of soldiers or putting a whole clip into Agent Ross' family. It makes sense, he was forced into this cycle of murder and horror. As far as the whole voice thing is concerned, that seems kind of petty, I don't remember what John said but it was just as annoying as the usual BS that game characters repeat endlessly.

Also, just out of curiosity, can you use prostitutes as Jack Marston?

For me John felt like a real character from the west while Jack felt like somebody trying to ACT like one. Which I guess makes sense if you look at it from the story's standpoint. But it ends up making me like John more.

I found the ending intresting. I'm very curious as to how Jack's story plays out and what direction he'll take. He easily has potential to be a very badass character and though he can't replace john, I believe we're watching the dawn of someone even better than him. I think the voice will change if they make a sequel though, I don't think they wanted to hire a new guy to read a half a page full of dialouge, it'd be a waste

There are two endings to that game... and both are equally tragic.

John makes the ultimate sacrifice to save his wife and son and give them a chance at a happy, peaceful life - one that he wanted for himself but couldn't attain. Eventually, as is hinted at a lot throughout the game, he learns that the past will always catch up, and you can't escape the things that you've done. Even though he has fully redeemed himself in more ways that one, it isn't enough, and he dies a noble if painful death.

Years later, Jack has never used the opportunity given to him by his father to live a happy, normal life. He is a loner and an outlaw, living only to carry out a long overdue revenge, which he does with bittersweet malice. Although this seems just and fair, it's not what John wanted for his son, and so his legacy is one of bloodshed.

For the record, I liked John more as a character but I like the idea of passing on the torch to his son through changing the protagonist. Jack was also very cool.

I probably like John a bit more because I did more with him. Personally I would have ended the game as John dies and had Jack's revenge as a sequel (it could be fleshed out much more).

I agree they just sort of gave you jack to screw around with after, but there is nothing unique about him. He was just a replacement for the dad. I mean they really should have given some actual missions with him after and not a dumb stranger mission, but maybe some wrap up missions. He could have been like his own epilogue, even though a lot of characters died, a lot of them lived with open ended stories. We could have revisited the Mexican revolutionaries, found out what happened to that old cowboy you helped get out of Mexico, the snake oil salesman, Irish, and the crazy grave digger were all alive. I would've really enjoyed going on some missions and getting to know this new Marston instead of using him as a place holder for a sandbox world.
