When you play a game do you look at things like that? Did you play farcry, get up to that point and say "wow, look how awesome that HDR rendering looks"? I bet you don't, I bet if they hadn't included that the game wouldn't have been ruined a single bit, I bet you wouldn't have even complained that they never put it in or have said this game could use HDR rendering.
To cut short a long and likely fruitless debate: yes.

Not "Wow that's some nice HDR" but simply "Wow, this game is amazing". I did say this was a small example, don't make a big deal out of it, all these little details add up and HDR is one of the most basic.

I also wouldn't worry about better graphics compromising gameplay, the rather long and incredibly detailed Crysis fits into a 5.8GB file [http://www.direct2drive.co.uk/6801/product/Buy-Crysis-UK-Download] and with 50GB Blu-ray for PS3 and PC's ability to easily install from multiple DVDs, graphics are not the reason games are getting shorter.

Making it have good innovative and original gameplay with interesting story are mostly independent issues, left down to the creativity and skill of the development team.
Some of these graphical improvements could be taken out and you would be none the wiserm atleast on the first play through.

So how come we don't have crysis on ps3? How come games are getting shorter but graphics are getting better? MW2 for example, the graphics on the guns and gloves atleast are awesome but the game is notoriously short.

In the past I would agree with you that we need to get rid of square elbows and smooth out curbstones in GTA, but do we really need to carry on improving them?

I'd have to get it for the 360 simply for the multiplayer. Assuming the game play is the same, the online value alone gives the xbox longer play value.

Drats! You got me! And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddlin' kids and your stupid keyboard.

Assuming that I have all three, I would get it on the PS3, but unfortunately I have the 360.

Short answer = yes

It is not like you have to go along with it, just consider all these DLC games that have rather basic graphics, the retro remakes, the return to 2D. Many many games are made for PC with low specs for people who can't or are unwilling to upgrade. Hell the Nintendo Wii was made entirely on the premise of "graphic are good enough already" as the Wii was barely more powerful than the Xbox 1. So you can quite comfortably ignore most of the technological advancements since 2002 by being a Wii owner.

But there will always be a cutting edge, expansion, manifest destiny, call it what you like there will always be a lot of people who want greater and better.

Consider Moore's Law which states that every 18 months the maximum amount of circuitry you can fit within a given surface area of a chip will DOUBLE. That means roughly processing power will DOUBLE every 18 months and it will because no electronics company wants to sit on their ass while the competition steams ahead. That means in 10 years computers will be on average ONE THOUSAND times more powerful, by 2019 iPhone sized pocket devices will be more powerful than government super-computers!!!

The technology for games consoles and Computers will and is expanding all the time, every week there is the release of a new component, more powerful than the previous and selling at the same price.

Crysis is actually coming to PS3 and Xbox 360 as well but the graphics are not quite as good as they were on PC. Even as early as 2007 PC gaming was running rings around the current generation of console hardware for no reason other than the modular nature of PCs allow you to push the limits much more with innovation in each individual component by dozens and dozens of different companies.

But PS3 has been offering incredibly advanced graphics similar to the Crysis with Uncharted DF and Killzone 2.

360, simply because the offset sticks fit better for different functions. I mean, Katamari was made for the PS3 controller, but the Xbox controller was made with Halo in mind. Hence, the controller is made for shooters.

...Please people, if the only reason you have for picking one or the other is that it's the only one you have, go away. But at least your honest about it.

A new FPS is coming out for all three consoles. They all have the same story and multiplayer components. Which console do you get
for the WII there arent that many FPS,s its fun for classic games like Mario Metroid Zelda etc. but for FPS,s its not that good (The House Of The Dead is a rail shooter not an FPS) the PS3 is a good choice but its expensive the 360 is cheaper but online costs money the D-pad isnt that bad since its mostley used for sellecting weapons the trigger on the controler feels pretty good in the hand (although you can buy an addon for the PS3 for that)ultimatly its your choice (I personaly own a 360)
P.S. the RROD is fixed in the newer consoles and repairs are free

I know I am not going to stop companies continually making the graphics better but it is getting silly, everything looks great as it is, whats left to improve? Are things going to look better than real life?

Another thing if we can get 50gb cd's wouldn't that mean we could have games that last us weeks as opposed to 40-50 hours? Just a thought.

Surely, Moore's Law can only go on for finite amount of time, that is assuming what you say is true, there has to be some kind of limit to how much power you can get before you have to get more space to fit it in.

What are we going to do with all that power? The iphone already seems to do everything you would possibly want a phone to do,I have just read a headline right underneath were I am typing "Snipers in Afghanistan Use iPhone to Kill Taliban".

We also have phones with have camera's that have the same mega pixels as a digital camera, so why do we need camera's any more?

I know things are going to get smaller so the ps3 in a few years could be the size book, which makes me wonder why we still use cd's, wouldn't it be better to use external hard drives? Store alot more on it, theres alot less waste, harder to damage the data (it's easy to scratch a disk), if we wanted to buy a game we could wonder down to the shop hand the cash over (or do it all online) and they (we) put the game on the hard drive, we to plug into our ps3/360 and upload the game, I am sure it could be done.

I may not be making much sense 'cos I feel awful and I can't get to sleep so I apologize for any mistakes or lack of sense.

Oh there is ALWAYS room for improvement. And Moore's law has held up for the last 50 years since the first integrated circuits were made and looks like it will hold up for a 100 years in total, especially if quantum computing matures as expected.

It may be hard to believe but the iPhone has SOOO much room for improvement. The 3D graphics are not all that good, the camera is all right but could be better, the flash memory capacity could be increased. The only limitation on the phone is battery technology as that is not subject to Moore's Law, it has been stagnant for years.

I mean one military example is the iPhone cannot at this time stream high definition video with deep encryption in real time, that would be particularly useful as UAV spy planes that view the battlefield with cameras and stream the data to forces on the ground. Can it SIMULTANEOUSLY record high definition video and upload that wireless-ly over a large complex mesh network? Actually, can the iPhone even run multiple applications at the same time? No it can't, so that is an area for improvement.

Point is if you don't care about graphics then you shouldn't mind if they improve, they are going to improve as a hell of a lot of developers and gamers are interested in how visually impressive a game is. It's a visual medium.

Don't think that if some law was passed limiting the graphical quality of games that they would be any longer or better. Coming up with good gameplay and enough of it without unnecessary padding is extremely hard.

For example, although a 50GB Blu-ray for PS3 games (most PS3 games DON'T fill a whole blu-ray disk, but they do use a more than a single DVD disk) has roughly 6 times the capacity of a DVD, that doesn't mean developers suddenly are able to create 6 times as much content for a game.

There is no Moore's law for creativity. They have new assets to work with, but coming up with enough interesting things to put in a game is still as hard as it was back in 1984 when the first 3D game appeared.

But it is not like those older game were lacking in content, they had enough but I want something new with new games. Graphics are one area but another is physics, more advanced processing technology allows for more complex interaction with the environment.

There is the idea that Hard Drives could replace optical drives and BTW stop calling them CDs. CDs SPECIFICALLY mean those with a capacity of 700MB, the word you are looking for is 'Optical Disc' which can be DVD, CD, Blu-ray, etc.

And hard disk drives are very cheap now, the cost per Gigabyte is vanishingly small and decreasing all the time. The problem is how do you actually get the data to the consumer? The idea of impulse purchases are gone if you have to bring your hard drive into a store, they are a liability to carry around and it so many other problems such as if the retailers would rather push for the sales of hard copies.

Download seems to be the way to go but the weak link in the is the internet itself, it struggles to deal with large volume traffic and many users are limited in total downloads per month. The publisher can also struggle to provide adequate server side upload so even through you may have a fast internet connection but the servers may be fare away and overloaded so it only downloads at a trickle.

At the moment this is impractical for things like High Definition movies which often take up a full 50GB of data and given the studio's attitudes to who owns the movie I'd much rather keep my own hard copy.

Not many PS3 games actually use all 50GB of data and those that do tend to use it for unimportant things like pre-rendered cutscenes in higher resolution/ less compression. However, many games use more data than a single DVD such as most PC games installing to take up 10GB on the drive. Single layer blu-rays of 25GB are slightly cheaper and often used.

In fact for Xbox 360's disk each disk can only hold 6.5GB of data rather than the maximum of 8.54GB, a whole 2GB of data is used up for anti-copying measures though most of them have proven to be useless as the piracy on Xbox 360 has shown.

Moving a bit more on topic, although Xbox 360 has managed so far on 6.5GB capacity it is playing it close to the wire, I'm not saying each game needs 50GB capacity, just that the 6.5GB capacity is not enough for the modern games. This becomes a problem as with Forza 3 had to come on two discs with extra tracks downloaded to the HDD while Mass Effect 2 and likely id software's RAGE will have to go on two discs... only this is a problem as those are open world games, you may have to swap between the same two discs over and over going backwards and forth.

What do you think of the look of the Saitek PS2700 Rumble Pad [http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/ps2700.htm]?

Well I am learning alot.

Can I start off buy saying a cd will always be a cd, atleast to me, an old car is still a car and a Bugatti Veyron is still a car, one may be a damn site faster, better looking, have alot more extras and do things the other can't but it's still a car. Plus it's alot easier to type.

I know there going to carry on with graphics and use it as a selling point, I would prefer them to stop being so seemingly concentrated on them and develop something else as much as they have done with graphics.

It must be the bulk of the work and cost to the game to develop a new level of graphics then apply them to every little thing, it would be atleast a money saver to just use a good level of graphics then build everything around that, atleast for a few games. Maybe it's just an easier way to grab people and lure them to buy the game.

I don't necessarily want them to stop improving graphics just slow it down, start thinking about improving other areas of games.

If cd's are able to hold 6 times the amount of stuff, why not fill the space with stuff? Imagine if Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa on just a sixth of the entire canvas.

I know I am noob to technology but my logic dictates that if you 6 times the space then fill it or would that annoy 360 owners?

I am trying to not comment on parts that don't relate to this thread since I have already caused it to ever so slightly off the rails, but I have read them.

Funny you say that about the Mona Lisa. That painting is in fact remarkably small, many people are surprised at how modestly sized it is and the whole point of canvas (compared to the old method of painting onto wood) was you could easily have a very large paining. This is in fact a very good example of a creative person wanting to makes something small and amazing than dilute his talent over a large canvas. In a way Da Vinci DID paint on one sixth the area compared to the size of other paintings of the era.

But obviously, that is not to say there is not such thing as too little of a good thing. A postage stamp would be too small for a painting and just like an hour long movie is too short for a feature film and a 6 hour game is also too damn short (Modern Warfare 2).

On the topic of 360's limited disc capacity... I think it is more than likely it will just be left behind. PC and PS3 just don't have these data volume limitations and already we have seen several multi-platform games break rank and put more data on the PS3 version than the 360 version of the same game (Tekken 6 is one of MANY recent examples).

PS3 has had an incredibly good year in terms of exclusives that really show off the potential of the PS3 hardware and PC processing power has reached the point where multiplatform games are stealing any advantage Xbox might have held. I think you just have to accept it that complaining about advancements/expenses of video games computer graphics is a bit like complaining back in the 30's about film moving from silent, black & white to full of colour, talking and music.

Here's a tip on CDs and optical discs... just call them "discs" as in "What about the issue of the size on disc". When you spell it disc (rather than disK) it implies it is a flat circular plate for holding data; whether an old school vinyl disc, a Compact Disc or blu-Ray. (generally the spelling disk with a K is for a magnetic medium like a Hard disk drive). Saying CD when you mean blu-ray or DVD is like someone saying "my Ford is parked outside" even though they drive a Toyota... but the first commercial automobies was made by Ford so now all cars are Fords... wait

Cars are cars, Fords are cars, Fords are not Toyotas

Discs are discs, CDs are discs, CDs are not Blu-rays.

People are just going to get confused and annoyed with you if you talk about "CD capacity" they will think you are living in the past. Just call them discs if nothing else.

Well that back fired, how about if the Mona was a 6th of the size it is now.

I think MW2 was never meant to be a single player game though, the multi player is much better (I haven't played online though). I have seen a few 1 hour long movies that were pretty good.

I live in a homeless shelter and 4 other people have 360s and I am the only one who has a ps3 so I am rather glad you said the 360 will get left behind.

Movies always had good stories were as games have the same story recycled multiple times, such as, "you are the only person who can save the world from aliens" you can apply that story to space invaders all the way to halo and dawn of war.

Cd - compact DISC, sorry just seems rather obvious

The first cars weren't fords but I get your point.

I don't think I have ever talked about a cd's capacity, I often say things like "pass the cd" or "were is the cd".

How far off topic are we?
Lol, very far.

Slightly more on topic, though I think the 360 will eventually be left behind though it won't be very easy as 35 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold globally to 30 Million PS3s... though I wonder what % of those 35m XB360s sold were to replace broken ones. But I definitely think we will see an increase in the number of third party PS3 exclusives for reasons as follows:

-Game standards have advanced to the point where the 6.5GB data size is too much of a limit on 360, not just for a detailed game but even making LARGE games. Same with other hardware aspects
-Knowledge of the PS3 architecture has extended to mean it is now very practical to take advantage of it where its full potential can be realised... maybe
-There are now so many PS3 consoles out there that a developer can be comfortable releasing on a single platform and still get a big return, 360 now has only a 16% lead.
-The Slim redesign has injected new vitality into the console and combined with those adverts PS3 is looking stronger than ever.
-Since the PS3 price cut the PS3 have been selling at a significantly faster rate than 360.

We are seeing this with Rockstar North (the guys who made GTA3, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA4 + DLC) are making a brand new IP simply titled "Agent" exclusively for the PS3. This is not a bought exclusive, Rockstar chose to make the game entirely on PS3 for their own reasons.

Also, Digital Foundry (at eurogamer.com) took a look at Dante's Inferno demo and found it to be very high quality in terms of frame-rate whereas in the past the PS3 had suffered in terms of multi-platform releases but this case it seems the PS3 version is as good as it can be.

Final Fantasy XIII is being lead on the PS3 and all signs point to the PS3 version being far superior thanks to blu-ray and increased processing power.

Overall, a good time to be a PS3 gamer.

I personally prefer the X-Box 360.
I'm kind of new to the Wii and I haven't tried an FPS on it, but the controls are a bit too touchy but probably would work for a Rail-Shooter or something.
As for the PS3, I've never played on one but I've tried the PS2 and thought the controls were . . . . . . . meh.
So I'm going with the X-Box 360. Whoop!
