Most people agree that the P.C is the undisputed master of stratagy games, and with Dawn of War 2, Empire Total War, and new expansions for Sins of a Solar Empire coming up soon in the next few months, I began to wonder what type of stratagy style will become the most common on the P.C in the future.

I would like to hear your thoughts on the matter

That's a very good and interesting question but I can't help but say "All of them" because it seems to fit every "Strategy" niche there is. Then we have the traditionals like C&C and the upcoming Starcraft 2.

i agree with you on the fact PCs are the champs for strategy games. The control sceam is perfect for the genre. But i dont know what the next step should be and what will be most common. It seem like any thing real time will be the norm but we can never tell

I'd guess that each will continue to exist, but games like Sins of a Solar Empire will come into their own with the hardware avaliable nowadays. Something like a 4X/RTS hybrid genre.

Real time "stratagy" is currently looking promising

Star Craft 2 is in an early alpha stage, which means that in maybe 4-5 months, it will finally be out, most likely shutting down the entire industry of Korea :p

With the upgrades that battle.net is receiving to allow great accessibility, SC2 will most likely seal in blood the RTS genre as the dominant one for another 10 years

I foresee RTS gaining a lot of depth in the non-combat aspects.

I also foresee 4X becoming more fluid and realistic, stepping away from turn-based to better emulate reality.

Basically, I think a sort of merger of the two genres is what would be by far the most fun to play.

Even though I know it won't be 4x games, I voted them anyway because I love them so much and want to play bigger, better and smarter ones, not rush fests like c&c red alert 3. I can play them for a bit, but I always go back to 4x games eventually.

I personally think RA2 is the best RTS game ever. It only lacks a continuing fanbase (and working servers). I still have plenty of LAN matches (On and off hamachi), and friends to discuss it with.
Plus, how can you argue with men that can cause objects to disappear from time?

I'm guessing that the industry is going to start shying away from being both tactical and strategic, and we're going to find ourselves with games that are based more around either the small scale, or the extremely large scale.

So DoW2/Myth at one end, Starcraft II/Total War/Supreme Commander at the other.

Don't forget, there's a Supreme Commander 2 coming at some point.

I'm also expecting a Homeworld 3 and/or Civilization 5 down the road.

Realistic war on strategic level is >99% waiting. Waiting is not fun, therefore it will never be put in a RTS in sufficient quantity. Turn based games contain the wait, but skip over it - "end turn" - and are in fact more realistic in that regard.

You are correct in that waiting is highly unfun, but you misunderstand me. I am not saying these games will become 100% realistic - only more so. (And to be honest, much of the added "realism" is graphics, such as using several little soldiers instead of one to represent a unit.)

I love some 4x. But RTS will remain dominant. I think tactical RTS though, not huge-massive RTS.

People, lets get this straight. RTT = RTS. the only difference is RTT is a sub-genre.

It's usually a horrible idea to make RTS games realistic. Squad-based combat (meaning that there are several units that can only be controlled as a group and not individually) is the best example of this: it doesn't add any depth to the game and severely reduces the potential for micromanagement (and the same usually goes for macromanagement since squad-based games tend to involve a lot less units) which usually makes fights quite boring. Also squad based games never stand a chance at being successful competitive games.

That said, games like Company of Heroes are pretty successful, so it's hard to tell where the genre is going. However, I definitely think that RTS (in one form or another) will remain the most important sub genre of strategy games.

Oi! You people firstly need to enlighten yourselves and secondly use Google!

eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate.
I have nothing to say about this thread though, I'll just wait here lingering for a person to denounce the PC as the king of the strategy genre. Then I'll swoop as swiftly as a carrion bird.
It is, of course, notable that none of these words actually begin with an X. I suspect people thought 4E sounded rather silly.

Alas for the PC Turn Based Strategy market below the 4X level. Ah, well, I'll just have to settle for the handheld games to fill that particular niche.
