Easy. Simply because I fail at patience and if I started dying way too often I'd bite the buttons off my keyboard. I guess it depends if the game itself is graded quite difficult or if a complete moron can pass it at normal. I always go on the safe part because I want to see how hard can the game get, but mostly is to save money buying keyboards and mouses.

Depends on lot of things. Since I am on PS3, it depends of the trophies. I usually begin at medium. Mostly because the games I play do not start with hard difficulty.

If it's a squeal to a game that I was previously good at, then I'll put it to the highest difficulty (example: Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty). But if I'm unfamiliar with it, I'll put it on normal difficulty and raise it up next time I play (example: Kingdom Hearts and Uncharted).

I always try on the hardest setting first just to get my feet alittle wet in the game. Unlest is a game that I know is really hard "Ninja Gaiden" then normal it is. If I just wanna get through the game I play on easy.

I always start on Normal get a good sense of the games plot without being constantly killed every 2 minutes, this difficulty is one where most achievements are unlockable.

Normal, so that I get time to figure out the basics and such.
Then after the first run through on normal I'll switch to hard so that I'll get any eventual trophies/achievments for doing so.

In the light of the recent movement towards casual gaming *COUGH COUGH Wii COUGH* I have seen my favorite and long running game series's difficulty bell curve down. Bioshock, (as the spiritual successor to system shock) is extremely easy, but the cover would not advertise it. In most games, i feel I have to crank up the difficulty for a challenge. Most of my friends see fun in having the difficulty lower, but I do not. I want to be challenged.

It depends on the game, If it's a game with only the choice of Easy, Normal and Hard I choose Normal. If I have the choice of Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard and Very Hard I choose Hard.

Normal, just to get a feel for the game, then I play through on the next setting, and then the hardest just to see if it's possible.

Easy, so I at least can replay the game twice on a higher difficulty setting. If the game turns out to be too easy then I switch to hard.

First time around I start on Normal... Because I don't like walking down easy street and I hate getting pwned right at the beginning when I'm not even sure what I'm supposed to be doing.

^ That part probably only referred to games like Armored Core, Ace Combat and Shadowrun where I needed to know how to use the certain stuff in the game and find out what is does.

If its a game/series i'm familiar with or a genre i'm familiar with then i go straight for the hardest difficulty.

e.g. Call of Duty or any shooter.

If its a game/genre/series i'm unfamiliar with i usually go 1 or 2 steps down from the hardest.

e.g. I just bought Street Fighter IV and am extremly unfamiliar with fighting games so i went for medium on that.

I choose very easy. Haven't played many games so need to get some practise in.

Normal. It gives you the most modest difficulty that wont leave you screaming at the screen in a fit of rage causing you to be put off of the game.
