I have a wide variety of tastes in video games, with different play times for different kinds of games. Faster paced games I prefer to play in short bursts, while games like RPGs are best played 30 hours at a time.

I like a game depending on how much a paid for it to how long i actually played it for.
For Example:
- I played Black Ops and beat the story in 5 hours, and payed $60 for it, lost interest in the multiplayer. I find the game crap. I was also wondering when the game finally ended while 2/3 of the way through it.
- No Time to Explain took me 2 hours to beat and i dont have any intention of re-playing it. I spent $10 on it so i feel like i might haved wasted some money.
- I spent 68 hours in Deus Ex: Human Revolution and played through it twice, getting any achievment i missed on the second playthrough. Loved it so much i bought the DLC. Payed $45 for it, money well spent.
- I've spent 1273 hours (and still rising) in Garrysmod for probably $20-30, you better believe that was money well spent.

I like lengthy and fun single player games, but a good multiplayer i can play with friends is what really hooks me into a game.

Around 8-10 hours is good enough for me, honestly way too many game overstay their welcome after the 10 hour mark, or they just get there through repetition/padding. Recently I've been telling myself more of "oh god why isn't this game over?" instead of "I never want this to end!". Don't get me wrong I'm sure the open ended stuff is great for some people who can make up hundreds of hours of fun, but that's not me. I play for the meaty content that was created for the player to experience.

As long as the game is constantly drawing me in and keeping me entertained at the same time, then it can run on for as long as it wants to. I don't have a preference of longer or shorter games, if it's good then it's good and I'll gladly give it the time it takes to complete it, or until I believe I've done all I can within the game thus my now almost 200+ hours in Team Fortress 2. Always new stuff coming up will keep me coming back. :)

Four words. Record of Agarest War.

There are a total of five chapters and on your first playthorugh you aren't likely to have very good gear. On top of that the first chapter is at least 12 hours and each chapter after that is progressively longer. FURTHERMORE there is a secret sixth chapter that leads to the true ending which while storywise is the shortest chapter the amount of grinding you'll need to do in order to beat it is pretty rough. My first run through that game took me over 70 hours. That is a long ass game.

I like games that never get old. Yes, they exist!

Roguelikes are awesome. But so are classics. *huggles scratched up cd-case of StarCraft* *looks at scratched up cd-case of EverQuest*

.... *sheds a tear* I hate it when the good games are MMOs :( because they eventually go away ... to NeverPlayLand. That's where good games that die go. :(

(I know EQ still exists but probably not for long ;_;)

For the campaign/story mode games around 10-24 hours on a first playthrough seems to be a good mix of quality and quantity normally.
If Multiplayer is in it like CoD then it will last until the next thing like it comes out.

No question it depends on the game.

Metro 2033 was the perfect length. If it had had any more levels or hours, it would have lost a lot of its atmosphere and post-apocalyptic charm.

Deus Ex:HR on the other hand could have had a dozen more hubs and been 3 times as long.

I think RPGs could stand to be longer in general where survival, horror and some shooters need to be reigned in to keep their cohesion

My first ever playthrough of Thief Gold, according to Steam, was about 43 hours... And I wouldn't hav it any other way.

On the other hand, The Longest Journey also lived up to its name and it annoyed me to great lengths with its fetch quests. I think longevity isn't an important factor, but rather the content and the variety in its content that it shows you along the way. For example, I loved Thief Gold despite the length, because every 2-3 levels it introduced something new that made you re-evaluate your approach on things. The Longest Journey on the other hand stayed a standard point-and-click game all the way through, and even though the story was colorful and had a lot of various and diverse situations and environments, I couldn't help but feel that it was getting tedious.

And don't even get me started about long games that you're not able to enjoy, like Final Fantasy 13 for me. I'm happy for all the people who did enjoy it, but damn, that game was no cool for me.

I've never really cared about how much time a game took. 10 or 50 hours, a game probably will have been finished in a weeks time.

Except for Sand Andreas. I've enjoyed the amount of time I put into that game. Haven't beat it yet, but I've played beginning Los Santos so many times now.

I guess 50+, since I always wish the game was longer once I finish it (if I liked it), but it depends on the game. If they can keep going with enough content to keep it still entertaining, the awesome, make it as long as possible. If it is just the same thing over and over again to the point where it is annoying (Super Smash Bros Brawl "campaign" thing, whatever the hell it was called), then trim it down.

I picked playtime doesn't matter, it's the actual game play. Short or long, if a game is fun, it doesn't matter. FTL is relatively short, depending what you actually call the game, but it's hell a lot of fun. Mass Effect is also a lot of fun but that right there is 25-50 hours as well.

I'll play something out until it's not fun anymore and even then I'll probably return back to it eventually.

my favorite series ever is Mass Effect, those games with all dlc consistently take me 30-40 hours per playthrough of each game. however for an FPS I think that shorter is better, Halo 4 and Black Ops 2 had a pretty good length for FPSs.

It depends on how engaging the game is. If the game ends up becoming a chore after 5 or 6 hours then I don't want it to drag on for another 10 or 20. On the other hand if the game is really engaging and has me on the edge of my seat I sure as hell don't want it to end after only 5 or 6 hours.

Most games I can only really see myself playing 20ish hours. More than that and a lot of games outstay their welcome. There are a few games which break this mold though and I can easily sink several hundred hours into them. Damn you Mount & Blade for eating over 1000 hours of my life away.
