I hate it when people say that classics are best. A game is not good just because it did something first ppl!

Either make a list of "historically" significant games, then have oldie games that defined new genres on top of the list, or make the list based on what the games are at face value.

The First Doom is way better than it's sequel, although both games are dwarfed by Half-Life 2?

How many of you can recite, with a straight face "Ms. Pac Man was a technical masterpiece at it's time, leaving the original Pac-Man completely in it's shadow. Bioshock gave Ms. Pac-man a run for her money, leaving Pac-Man in it's wake, but ultimately failed to dethrone the yellow, pixel-eating queen."?

Umm, Arkanoid (60)is not better than Civ 4. If you are going to be presumptuous enough to assume you can list the best games ever you should at least attempt to place them in a reasonable order. Seems like after the top 10 they just listed good games and make no real attempt at ranking. They did manage to put every single Zelda game on every single console in there though. Do you guys honestly think Dr Mario (69) was better/more influential than Fable/X-com/Asteroids/Diablo/Far Cry?

Obviously I would do this list differently for my own tastes, but all things considered it isn't terrible like most "Best Games Ever" lists I've seen.

7 out of 10 of my personal top 10 were on the list, not all that high up though. Also, seeing Tetris Attack brought back some distant childhood memories...

The order is screwy on a few of these, but overall not too bad. FF6(3) was above FF7, but Portal was much too far down the list. Why they placed an older Ultima when the newer ones (like 7 and 7pt2) were brilliant is a mystery.

...and no Grim Fandango? I mean, come on, fellas.

No Psychonauts.

BGAE: 200.

Portal: 100.

No. Just no.
The list loses credibility for Beyond Good & Evil even being on it... art assets be damned, the gameplay of it is throwing switches to open doors and pressing A rapidly to defeat enemies.

Portal, 100?

Seriously?

Seriously?!

The Sims did better than Portal?!

(Also, has any one noticed "The Elder Scrols IV, Oblivious" in there?)
Uhhh... that's kind of an obvious one, given what The Sims did to expand the demographic interested in games.

73-Rock Band 2

Bullshit.

Both games were made by Harmonix and RB2 improved on GH in every way possible.
Uhhh... except it wasn't as original? Final Fantasy IX has better graphics, music, etc. than the first Final Fantasy; it's still a worse game.

No I don't agree, what's so good about "Bully" to put it on the top 200?
I also don't think that sports sims (gold football etc) should be in the list, neither should MMO's as people before have said
Why should whole genres be discluded at random? The Sensible World of Soccer is a vastly better game than Call of Duty 4, and Everquest is far more influential than, say, Metroid Prime.

10 -- Ms. Pac-Man (coin-op, 1981)

52 -- Pac-Man (coin-op, 1980)
This alone renders it BS.
Agreed. Plus the absence of so many early, important titles (Pit Fall, Pac-Land, Alpha Waves, etc).

umm, GTA III should NOT be that high up, it deserves like a mid 100-200 rating.
I think you're trying way too hard to be cool, and need to try harder.

Actually it is, sorry.

Critics need to go crawl in a ditch and die so the new generation can take over. These old games simply do not stand up to modern games in any way 85% of the time.

Name one person you know that enjoys Tetris more than they do Modern Warfare 2. Now note that their opinion is invalid because they're in the minority. New games are simply better.
If criticism were just a popularity contest, there'd be no need for it, as it'd just be performing the same job sales do. As it stands, game critics are tasked with preserving the history of the medium in spite of relative consumer disinterest (when compared to the present) and scrutinizing the playability and innovativeness of new releases.

...Obviously something can only be assessed in relation to its time. So to call a game "great", for journalistic purposes, is to rationally do just that: evaluate it in context and compare it to games that both preceded and succeeded it.

It feels decent, but far too new-game centric and seems to lack the progenitor titles of some (like System shock 2 over Bioshock).

But I like that Doom got what recognition it deserved, but I would elect one more- Mechwarrior 2. It changed 3D simulator games as a whole, and helped bring in the entire craze of online play.
This doesn't make any sense.

As internet lists go, it's pretty good, but I find a flaw in most of these greatest games ever lists, often they seem to rank games based on how good they were considered when they came out, not how good they are by today's standards, which I would find much more interesting.

I skimmed over it and it looks like it got a lot of the good ones. The order seems somewhat odd though. Whatever it's not like there going to use this as the absolute definition of truth in the future anyways.

Metroid Prime 85th? Pah. It should be first.

The NES LoZ is not better than the new ones. Just because it's an old game does not make it infallable.

Homeworld 129th?! What is this (hint: it's not Sparta)?
