Still supporting Bio shock for game of the year, regardless of what anyone else says as it is a opinion based topic and while the actual gameplay was a step down from Bio shock 2 and 90% of the way through I started to wonder if it was worth it , the ending and the story is just the mother of all sucker punches and I don't think we'll see its like for a long time to come. In my opinion.

I've had a very Nintendo-y year for games so far actually (in that most games I've bought or am looking forward too are for Nintendo platforms). I've been fairly ambivalent towards titles like Bioshock, Tomb raider and GTA...

Anyway so far, of the games I've played, I'd give it to Fire Emblem Awakening. I am new to the series and tactical role playing games in general so it was one hell of a game for me.

Since I haven't played anything in the poll I'll just say that for me it's Saint's Row 4 and Borderlands 2. Nothing else this year has given me as much fun as those two. X-com: Enemy Unknown is a very close runner up but I can't say it's GOTY material by any means. But then I usually don't like strategy RPGS anyway so the fact that it's anywhere near that high on my list is a surprise.

Bioshock Infinite so far for me so far. I have yet to play GTAV or Saints Row 4 though. Saints in particular looks extremely fun.

If they would have kept the original BioShock Infinite's script, I think it would have fared a lot better.

As it stands, GTA V is probably in the forefront, with The Last of Us at in second.

1.Animal Crosing: New Leaf, yes I'm serious.

2. Beyond: Two Souls.

3. Saints Row IV

These are my choices for GOTY

You know, for a long time I thought it was going to be Bioshock Infinite, then The Last Of Us came out of nowhere and was WAY more enjoyable than I expected and for a time, kicked Bioshock off my Game Of The Year throne.
Now that I've owned both games for a decent amount of time, I'm leaning towards Bioshock again, but for the most part, it's a toss-up between the two.
I'm hoping that Watch Dogs is going to blow both of them away just so I don't have to choose.

The Last of Us so far. I was expecting good things and got them, then the 'Winter' chapter came along and blew me away. Then the ending happened and impressed me some more. Loved the desperate, scrappy combat throughout.

Bioshock Infinte is a close second. Second-to-none aesthetically. (TLoU looked good, but it didn't have a 1910s floating sky city to work with). I actually enjoyed the gameplay too, and wasn't bothered by the dodgy quantum physics stuff since it's besides the point of the story. Fucking loved the ending. However it loses points for the mismatch of story and gameplay.

GTA V? Phht. That game is just bloody soulless. Mildly entertaining at best and zero interest.

PS. Would it really break our little hearts to leave this stuff until December? You know, when the year is actually over?

I'm going to have to say Papers, Please or Metro: Last Light. Papers has shown me possibly the most difficult decisions I've ever had to make in a game and Metro gave much cleaner gunplay while maintaining that oh so wonderful Eastern European depressing atmosphere.

Why does everyone post that stupid Infinite critique? It's just a bunch of nitpicks about the game like Yahtzee doing a 30 minute review but with no humor.

I think it's because it perfectly explains why Infinite is such a bloody mess that never should've been an FPS, since the developers obviously didn't know how to make one. And thank the Lord there's some reviewers out there who feel that simply being indepth and informative is entertaining enough, rather then shoving in forced comedy.

OT: Still The Last of Us.

GTA5 is great fun, but after the numerous hours playing it I can already feel the monotony compounding onto the game. It's a major step up from GTA4, but it still suffers from the usual open-world/GTA problems.

Can't decide until I'm done with GTA V. But so far I'm in love with it the way I was in love with San Andreas back in the day. I'm waiting on Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV and Batman: Arkham Origins, though.
This is pretty much me but with a lack of interest in GTA... I think that if watch dogs turns out as good as i suspect it should get game of the year

Bio infinite had crap gameplay. A game with crap gameplay doesn't win GOTY, don't matter if the story is amazing. It'll win movie of the year maybe.
May I just ask you if you went into the game expecting the combat to suck because the combat in Bioshock 1 did?
Bioshock 1's gameplay was pretty good at the time, or at the very least not boring. It had innovative mechanics, no regenerating shields, a personal trait system, and unique interesting weapons.

Infinite's gameplay was bland. There were no real security system gameplay, hacking, and it had the most generic weapons imaginable. They even trashed a crossbow in favor of a sniper rifle like every generic FPS ever. The whole game was clear room ---> proceed in a linear path to the next room to clear and seldom deviated from that formula for anything.

Because it's well-written and brutally honest?

The story is a mess. Plain and simple. The game is good, but the story is not.

I wouldn't complain if the guy brought up major problems with the game, but it's all just nitpicks so without some comedy it's not very entertaining at all, at least cut it down to like 10 minutes or less, it's over a freaking half hour long. MovieBob has more substance in his 5 minute videos. It's not very in-depth at all because a critique is not just saying what's bad but what's good as well. Bioshock Infinite is far from a mess. I believe (as I saw the video months ago) the guy complains about the weapon upgrade system because you're only allowed 2 guns at a time so if you upgrade the machine gun and pick up a pistol, the pistol then sucks. I played 1999 Mode and used the same 2 guns pretty much all game while doing the Scavenger Hunt trophy/achievement (no buying ammo), his critique is a much bigger mess and should've never been a critique (since it's not one).

The story is way better than the original Bioshock, which is way more of a mess than Infinite as Bioshock's story is perhaps the worst assassination plot ever.

He does bring up major problems, have you seen that video? Linear level design, two-weapon limit that discourages you from experimenting, the game treating you like an idiot, the anti-climactic Songbird encounter, the underwhelming Vigors, poor item placement, melee that is never touched on again, etc etc Ad nauseam.

It's not supposed to be funny - it's supposed to give an in-depth analysis of the game and its components. The majority of the video is a complete overview of the story, which makes sense, given that it's the majority of the actual game.

Look at it like this: Part 1: BioShock Infinite's core mechanics, Part 2: BioShock Infinite's story, Part 3: BioShock Infinite's design when compared to another, older, and better game.

The story is way better than the original Bioshock, which is way more of a mess than Infinite as Bioshock's story is perhaps the worst assassination plot ever.
A mess when compared to a slightly worse mess is still a mess.

For all of you saying it's too "early" to declare what people think is GOTY, I think the myriad of answers thus far of people actually stating what people declare they think is GOTY kinda says otherwise, so there's no real point in me saying anything in rebuttal to your anal-retentive "NO YOU CAN'T DO THAT!" attitudes. Carry on.

And with that said, my pick's gotta be The Last Of Us. Just the execution of the story alone made it a worthy outing...to dismiss it as just a "zombie" or "post apocalyptic" tale is to be ignorant of what true storytelling is. Joel in my opinion is not the "scruffy white guy" archetype that cynics pigeonhole him into, he's a man who through the course of the game went from someone who had nothing to fight for to someone who had everything to fight for to HIMSELF...though obviously that ideal differed greatly than the grand scheme of things. Without spoiling the ending, it takes one of the most age-old plot devices there is and flips it 180 degrees. You all have probably heard of or even seen how jarringly emotional the beginning of TLOU was. The ending equally as profound, which is why even as I pop in GTA5 in a couple of days, even as I will get my hands on BF4 and by the end of the year have a PS4 and all the wonderful things that come with it...to me...The Last Of Us is the best game of 2013. And if it's "too early" for me to make that distinction, then take your "distinction" and shove it you know where.

I can't comment on the story since I stopped playing. And the reason for that is perfectly explained in the gameplay portion of this video. The gunplay feels terribly flacid and unsatisfying, the enemies don't react to being shot at all untill they die, and enemies spawn so randomly that you have no choice but to just stand there and take massive amounts of damage untill everyone is finally dead. A lot of features feel crowbarred in without considering the rest of the game mechanics, like weapon upgrades in a game that allows only two weapons to be carried at a time. Meaning you either clutch to the same two weapons for the whole duration of the game, or you switch weapons for the sake of variety foregoing your upgrades.

Those are already pretty major problems.

The point of this video was not to outright shit on the game, but to give some counters as to why the massive praise it has gotten might be a bit overblown, seeing as it has so many annoyances.

This game was at its best when it was not trying to be a first-person shooter, which unfortunately was only 20% of the time that I played it. I got to the Chinese weapon smith, and at that point my patience with the abysmal shooting sections had been exhausted.

Saints Row IV

There are two more months in the year, however. Really looking forward to Starbound. Starting to think they aren't going to make their "out in 2013" deadline, though.
