Honestly, that Okami one looks pretty badass. If there's a GOOD gaming tattoo out there, I don't see why people shouldn't get one.

Also a bit of a "guide" (and or funny take) for those thinking of tattoo as how the general public sees them:

Eh, I think tattoos are pretty classless and tacky to begin with, but game related tattoos are like 10x as tacky.

I'm going to get the Great Chain from BioShock on my wrist/lower arm whenever I can.
So are you going for irony with that ink? I mean, a man designs his own tattoo, a slave tattoos someone else's art onto his body.

Yay! Okami! But as great as the Okami tattoo was, I still think it isn't a good idea to make those game based. It's just a game people. I understand it's becoming an increasingly popular medium, but it's not a good reason to paint yourself in it.
What would you classify as a good inspiration//reason for a tattoo?

The majority of tattoos I encounter on the Northern Beaches in Sydney consist of dudes with tribal pattern on their biceps, chicks with 'tramp-stamps' on their lower back and maybe a couple of sleeves here and there. Also might catch a guy with his wifes//daughters name on his arm? These are hardly what I'd call 'inspired tattoos', it's more like they walked into a tattoo parlour and ordered something off the take-away menu.

I realise that Sydney's North Shore's probably not the best demographic to choose from as I have seen some really cool tatts out there in the world but I'd like to know what your reason is for disapproving of game-inspired body-art.
I feel that games have had just a profound effect on my life as a majority of other media (music, movies etc.).

I'm trying to make it as original as possible (Like, as I mentioned above, An arm outstretched over the chain with the chain themselves.)
It's more of an ode to the deep philosophical theme of BioShock and Rapture.
I'm a fan of the game and it's meaning, doesen't mean I lack originality...
And who knows, maybe that won't be my only tattoo.

getting something from a game is probably not a good idea
sure you will like it now
but what if you don't later?

Most people will see it as just a joke or something "childlike", instead of seeing it as the artistic expression you intended.

Also - Thought I'd add this as an example of how not to go about a game tattoo.

Zelda back? tatt.
Notice the lack of any defining style, even the ink work itself is amateur in some parts.
Bad concept. Bad design. Bad shading. Bland result.
This is something I can foresee the owner regretting in a decade or so (if not, sooner).
That tattoo looks bad.

I'm not an expert on tattoos, but I would imagine that having a permanent tattoo where an adult man's groin is obscured by a child's head is a bad idea, especially when the child appears to be blowing or sucking on something.

I know it's from Zelda, and they're both Link, and young Link is facing away... but to a casual observer the imagery is just wrong.

Yes, that tattoo is badong.

i've got three tattoos so far, and i'm working on the next few ideas.
i'm going to have gaming tattoos, so i totally support them if they're done well.

as you showed quite well. go for it. :D
Ahh awesome :) What type of game tatts you going for?
I was a bit pedantic in selection and tried to go for timeless stuff... (not so hard considering Nintendo and I basically grew up together)

Would you kindly take this into consideration: at some point, you will have to explain the tattoo to your kid. I know that I never want to have the conversation, "Well Timmy, when I was younger there was this game that I really liked and I thought it would be a good idea to..."

Or my rendition:
"I really favored the philosophical undertone to a very popular game back in my day that borrowed loosely from a novel with the same philosophical meaning. So I decided to get a tattoo, as I wanted that piece of thought provoking art to travel with me always, to remind me to question authority, be a man, and don't be afraid to make your own descisions."

Thats what I would say, personally.
Just because it comes from a videogame doesen't make it any less credible. Atleast I choose to get a tattoo with meaning, rather than going around with something that lacks meaning and just "Looks cool" (Which I see nothing wrong with, I just prefer my body art be deep and philosophical.)

I've got a gamer mommy tattoo. My son's name is Locke Douglas, Locke after the video game character in FF6 and Douglas for Douglas Adams. I'm a gamer chick (and into vintage games), so I wanted a bit of my personality in my tattoo, so I've got the sprite from FF6 and my son's name and birthdate.

I fail to see how I could grow to dislike a symbol of gaming that I've literally grown up with for 20 years, if I took your advice to heart I'd probably never EVER end up getting any sort of tattoo for fear of regret :(

Oh and would you be able to maybe share some pics of your designs? I love tatt designs! I drool over tattoo art books and the likes :)
The placing of the love one sounds hardcore, you realise that's like the most painful place to get a tatt? You can feel the needle rattling your ribcage :D

p.s *hi-5 for guitar* What type of axe do you wield? I've got a Fernandes Revolver ^_^

That is awesome!
Glad you went with the sprite version instead of the illustration, makes it look much more retro.
Great game as well.

i think it's brilliant.
and i agree, just because it's from a game doesn't make it less meaningful.

My friends and I are talking about each of us getting a tattoo on our wrists with one of the triforces on it, one would get wisdom, the other would get power, the other would get courage (undecided which one will get which though...)

or possibly a dead space one on my back, slasher arms (necromorph) on my back...but i probably wouldn't get that ebcause it would suck now that i think about it.
