If you were given the option of these two games to play, which would you choose?
1) a Shoot 'em up, kill 'em all game where you are given a giant map, some scenery and cover and a shitload of guns and a large amount of enemies in which all you do is run around killing them in the most blood inducing ways possible (yum). Or...
2) A Game that is heavily story based where your decisions effect the ending and if you go around killing everyone.. well it wont really go well for you.

Basically, Would you choose story or killy?

Personally I'd go for story, I'm kind of a story nerd to begin with and I like seeing my decisions played out the game. Makes me feel special.

Although there are times I do enjoy pointless killing for relaxing purposes, i.e. God of War.

Well if it really boiled down to either Killzone 3 or Heavy Rain, I would pick Heavy Rain. My opinion but I prefer it when there is a story that is followable and dips and weaves through certain ideas. Killzone is... well... just look at Critical Miss's latest comic.

Story. If only because if the game sucks, the story could still keep me interested.

A game that has out of combat skill use, many dialogue options, decision based ending also has a lot more replayability than "go here, kill everyone, get out, kill everyone, save, repeat!"

That's kind of hard to choose, there's a reason so many games are a combination of those.

Eh, I have to go with story.

[sub]I still hate Quantic Dream, mind you.[/sub]

I'd only choose story if it at least allowed my ruthless slaughter of everybody in the game world to be incorporated in some way.

And if my actions were causing one kind of story branch I didn't like I'd kill the people involved and leave.

Give me killy over pretentious player overriding story any day. The point of interactivity is that I can override things through my own intervention, after all.

(Honestly, at the end of the day, I'd ignore them both for a multiplayer or 4X game)

I'd always go with story. When I went to really experience a game, I always opt for something deeper. Luckily, most story-driven games also allow for decent killing rampages, as well.

I honestly don't like having to choose between no story and boring/bad gameplay. I say that I pick the hybrid category that Bioshock resides.

Whichever has a better gameplay. Don't usually care too much for the story.

In the case outlined above, I may actually go with killy. Bear with me here.
Gaming is the only medium which can deliver that kind of experience. Sure, it can be said that it'd be hard for movies to have an interactive storyline (although I remember hearing about a DVD horror sequel release in which you got to choose which characters live or die) but it would be impossible to do in any other medium. What I'm saying is essentially: I prefer a game that delivers a good experince as a game over a game that delivers a good experience aping another medium.

Sowwy. I shall play Silent Hill 2 in repentance. :(

You can easily have both- Either by mixing up the mission structure or by allowing the player to keep playing if they fail the mission. If the alarm is raised and reinforcements are sent against you, all may seem lost, but at least you can take out as many of them with you as possible- INCLUDING the one guard that caused you to fail.

A lot of devs don't realise how cathartic it is to be able to kill that guy, and how frustrating it is when you can't.

Story all the way. Unless it's something unique like Tetris, or Worms, or a casual title. Otherwise, I don't even bother playing games without storylines in them.
It doesn't have to be a GREAT story, God of War has a story too. But without it, it would just be mindless hack and slash, and I wouldn't bother buying it.
