Poll: Gamer Stereotypes and why they are Obsolete.

I had a brain blast today and realized that none of my "gamer" friends meet the stereotype, which brings me to the point of this post. I can't speak for all gamers, so I want to know; is the forty year old man (who may or may not be living in his mother basement) and the pimple covered preteen no longer the mass of the gamer population? And if not, why is that still the stereotype?

I second this . With a slight variation . I am black . And at the risk of sounding like a douche, pretty good looking . I still can't get laid because i'm so socially awkward and couldn't ask a woman out for the life of me . I prefer games , they don't judge me .

I suppose I fit a few traits of the stereotype, I am 17, skinny, white and male. I am a nerd in other categories of interest i.e fantasy/sci-fi media, computer programming etc. So yeah, call me a stereotype but I don't think it means much beyond my general interests and appearance. I'm sure I differ in personality a fair amount from most people, as humans are generally fairly different from each other.

I guess I fit the stereotype of being rather apathetic, reclusive and socially inept especially when put in the proximity of good looking boys and girls. So it looks like I'd fit in the socially awkward stereotype although it seems that's not a poll option, how inconsiderate. Hmph. Well, I guess I'm pretty effeminate, so I'll take the bottom option. :3

I fit the age stereotype and maybe racial if I still played Starcraft but I like exercise and I don't really have any social problems. Stereotypes are true to an extent.

I kid. I fit into that type too, but I don't like to call myself an Otaku. Mostly because I don't like the word.

I...sort of fit the stereotype. I'm 27, married, and I was once a part of special operations in the Army, BUT I am white, skinny, and I do have posters and action figures in this room (they are mostly my wife's). I also have a couple of "gamer" t-shirts. I doubt I come off as a gamer to strangers (unless I'm wearing one of those shirts), but anyone that I actually talk to for more than a few minutes will probably start to pick up on it eventually.

Edit: What's really funny is that my wife probably fits the stereotype better than me and she's NOT a gamer. At all. She didn't even finish her copy of Epic Mickey that I bought for her a year or so ago.

Well nope, I don't think I fit any of that, when people see me coming they don't think normal they think Who's that handsome young man?! And when I open my mouth they don't think gamer either, they think either one of these things: This guy is totally insane I cannot understand what he's saying because he talks to fast! or Wow! man could you have a more boring monotone voice! or Why is he just looking at me, why doesn't he talk!!!

I am a very eccentric individual.

It wasn't present in the poll, sadly, but I'm more like the "Professor/Intellectual". I've got a look-out-it-might-explode hairdo, a pair of round glasses and even got the absent-minded bumping into things going. It's like I fell through the cracks in a comic book and ended up here, somehow.

Actually, no stereotypes apply and they never did. Such things were made in order to be prejudice against a type of person for a set amount of reasons. For instance, I don't fit any.
