OK, so I searched the forums and was surprised that I couldn't find a thread about this, so...

Where did all the in game games go?
By "in game games" I mean those minigames/puzzles that you would be given every now and then, seemingly at random, that you would have to complete to continue, like, when in Ratchet and Clank you would be given gadgets that let you through locked doors if you did a little minigame (by the way, I know the Ratchet and Clank ones still exist, its just an example of an in "game game"), and in the Jak and Daxter series where, for example, you had to hit a load of cubes into a bridge across a lake of insta-kill liquid.
Well it seems to me that these "in game games" are dying out; which I think is a shame, because I quite enjoyed them.
But am I the only one who misses them?

do you mean mini-games which are unlocked and played later or a game integrated into the core gameply?

Oh gods, no. I loved some of the minigames in certain games, they were made really well. But then some games had horrible minigames that were just ripoffs of Tetris, and those were horrid.

Do we mean stuff like the pipe hacking minigame in BioShock, the poker machine in Prey, Pazaak in the KOTOR games, darts, pool, bowling, QUB3D and various others in GTA4, zero-g basketball in Dead Space etc. You get the idea.

I like them as a distraction, like Pazaak in KOTOR. I prefer to have the choice of playing or not playing them though.

I think my favourite was the hacking in the original System Shock. Floating around a wireframe cyberspace shooting energy pellets at a holographic dog head to unlock doors and shit.
Awesome.

The mini-games in Final Fantasy VII and Shenmue are among my favorites.

FFVIII och FFX-2 weren't bad either in those aspects.

Oi! Wheres my, 'Yes, and they were awesome' option.

I may be the only one but i have always LOVED the FF minigames - blitzball and the card game from 9 being the top contenders, 7 had some good ones too but the disc i played them on was scrated to buggery all over the minigame segments ¬_¬ took me almost a day to play the mountain defence thing.

Edit: Oh and the monster arena for DQVIII was awesome!

I can't stand Tetra Master, personally. It was too random, where a 4 would spontaneously win against a 5 or a 6.

Triple Triad, however, is love. <3

I liked having the choice to do a mini game... and not be forced to do one... they just seemed like cheap and irritating ways to carry on playing a game...

How can you think something was awesome and still not miss it?
Aaah, misread the poll, my bad.

Edit: to be fair, i dont think they're gone so there should be another option.

Ah yes, Pazaak. Damn good game. And I liked the arcade games in San Andreas, they were good for a couple of minutes relaxation after taking out a few dozen Ballas.

Generally mini-games like that are great if they're either entirely optional, or it makes sense that you would have to do some kind of puzzle to progress.

Although I didn't like the hacking mini game in Mass Effect. Of course, I don't think it was too fond of me either.
