The most recent ones I dropped was Yakuza 3, Brütal Legend, Metro 2033 and Splinter Cell: Conviction.
Yakuza 3 was a game that I thought was about beating the shit out of people while having lots of places to explore. Instead you beat some guys up, then proceed to take care of some orphans problems for a few hours. Over and over again. Not sure how far I got, but I don't feel like playing it anymore.
Brütal Legend was awesome in the beginning, but then it all of sudden turned into a third-person RTS game. Not particulary hard, but I don't fancy RTS even a little. I waited a long time to buy since I don't feel like supporting all these metal-based games anymore. It has gotten way to commersial - but I got it for free when I bought two others games, so what the hell.
Metro 2033 wasn't bad... but the stealth sections was too damn hard. The main reason I dropped it was because I got lots of new games for my PS3. Don't feel like starting it up again though. It wasn't that good.
Splinter Cell: Conviction wasn't what I expected. I don't have any familiarity with the Splinter Cell series(can't wait until the trilogy for PS3 finally gets released), but I knew it was a stealth game. Conviction has stealth elements, but mainly it's just a regular cover-based shooter. I'm pretty sick of those.
I'm also stuck in a damn laser room.

Diablo 2: I occasionally make another character, level them into the 80's, gear them out, then stop playing the game for another three months. I have four accounts now, full of characters.

Scribblenauts: what the user above said, it just gets old fast. I'll probably pick it back up next time I do the laundry.

Dead Space: I couldn't figure out how to get past a monster on the wall in the sixth mission and now the game sits unplayed. I've only been off it for a week, I will be back.

WoW: I drop this at exactly the same time every year: as soon as University starts up (or school, as it used to be). I really enjoy it over the Summer, but I find it just eats up far too much time when I'm meant to be working or having a real life, so I let my subscription run out at the end of every summer. (in case you were wondering, yes I am currently subscribed.)

Fallout 3: New Vegas: I really regret ever having dropped this. I'm pretty sure I nearly got right to the end of the main story arc, and I'm not entirely sure what happened but I just up and stopped playing one day. No idea why, and I keep meaning to go back to it but it appears I've lost my save file and just don't have the motivation to do it all over again.

FFXIII: I actually quite liked this game *dodges bottle being thrown*. again, not entirely sure why I stopped. I'm pretty sure something stupid happened in the story and it was a '**** this!' moment. I hink the same thing happened with the original Kane & Lynch when you went from a small team to inciting a civil war - just put me off.

Kingdom hearts II, because I realized that game was total crap.
I don't think I've ever actually completely finished a KH game. Again, I love them, but stuff always gets in the way. (also, KH2 was crap in comparison.)

Exact same thing with Scribblenauts, and I do the exact same thing with Diablo 2 (although I've now misplaced the discs so it probably won't happen again *sad face*. Can't say I can motivate myself all the way up to the 80's though. I normally just get together with a friend or 2 and we play through the campaign.

it doesn't happen to me quite often. I do drop games and wont touch them for a long time then pick it up a few months later like nothing happened. When i was playing bioshock 1 trying to get the brass balls achievement(beat the game without vita chambers) i played about 4 hours without saving, i died and lost all of my work. so i put the game away for about 5 months then picked it up and finished the game.

I tend to drop games, at least temporarily, if I get stuck. Like, severely or frustratingly stuck. And, like you, I can never just pick it up where I left off after long breaks. So I usually end up playing those games several times over just to get past parts that are frustrating. Right now those games include FFIX, FFXII, The Last Remnant, and probably a few I can't think of at the moment.

Darn you Square Enix!

Yeah I've never really been able to enjoy driving games.

Mario Kart is an exception, but my interest takes a nose-dive after playing through all the tracks. After that, I can only enjoy the game if I'm playing with another person, preferably in the same room.

Kinda the same with fighting games too. I don't like playing SSBB all by myself. :(

There are plenty of games I love that I've put off finishing, usually because life and college got in the way. Usually I intend to finish them once I have free time again, but then I end up forgetting and buying a new game which then delays me returning to that game I think is awesome but forgot I hadn't finished.

There have also been games I love that I haven't finished (or only finished X number of times) because the game disc freezes every time I get to a certain point, or there's something wrong with the game. Those moments suck.

I think that happened to my brother in the last disc of Final Fantasy VII. It kept freezing at a certain point, so he didn't really have a choice other than to drop the game.

Was it a used copy? I always buy new copies of games unless I really don't have a choice. Especially with discs, since they're rather prone to damage.

I try and complete games (I had to as a kid, I wasn't allowed a new game until I completed my old ones) but sometimes it's just not possible as something crops up in real life and I won't get back to the game. The last game I did that to was Final fantasy X. It didn't help that I didn't like the game that much to begin with, but I decided to power through just in case it got better. Then I had a lot of school work to do therefore I dropped it, and haven't returned to it since. If I am really busy I tend to drop things and forget about them entirely, unless it's really memorable and enjoyable.

Halo 3. I love Bungie to death, and then along came Modern Warfare 2, which I got sick of after legitimately prestige-ing three times. Halo 3 was waiting with open arms.
