What do you think? Is gaming a canvas, ready to be covered in beautiful landscapes, intricate characters and gripping storylines? Or is it an innocent escape from reality wherein you can live out your greatest fantasies? My vote's for entertainment - how 'bout you?

I say both, really it depends on the specific game. But wouldn't you think that is IS entertainment...

Easily both...you just have to wait for the critics to show up and it's an art form.

Games can be an art form, but really, which game is these days? You can almost count them on one hand, most of the games are still just mindless entertainment :p

So, yeah games are art... They are also a very entertaining form of an art, or perhaps art displayed in an entertaining manner.

All games are entertaining, some games can be art, but I wouldn't make a blanket statement and say that gaming (suggesting all games) is both art and entertainment.

Some games are churned out solely to make money, so they can hardly be considered as art.

Entertainment at the moment imo, although perhaps it has the potential to grow into an artform. As its something of a hybrid entertainment form, containing some art but adding its interactivity I chose other.

Why not? Purely artistic intention is rare in any artist. Expression is nice, but food on the table takes priority.

I don't consider Capitalism or profiteering an art form, or think EA are artists.

But as they say, art is entirely subjective.

They are entertainment, but certain aspects of a game could fit as art.

I.E.: Music, art style, etc.

So, both.

Art and entertainment overlap allot. I consider Killer7 to be art and Pokemon to be entertainment so both depending on the game.

since all art started of as entertainment and video games are (kind off) in the transition between them, its both.
However does anyone thing that big corporations like EA will kill of any chance of art in gaming as its easily to churn out a shitty sequel and sell billions then a masterfully crafted game which sells thousands. Also art as to have 'soul' money and big corporations doesn't come under my dictionarys definition of soul.
Like Damien Hurst the man whose trying his best to turn art into a business... prick.

There is no boundary between entertainment and art. Gaming covers both, so does painting, cinema, theatre, music, sculpture, etc. All are art forms and all are entertaining in their own way(to certain people). It just depends on how they are executed whether they are art or entertainment...or both, of course.
