Depens on the game, and what Im doing or trying to do. When Im just enjoying myself, its fine. When I have a specific goal, it can start to feel like work. It really depends. It really is a matter of what you're doing. I mostly feel like Im doing work when Im going after harder or redundant achievements in a game. Dynasty Warriors 6 has one achievement for getting every single character to lvl 50. That starts to feel like work after awhile. Mostly after I complete everything else.

I really only play for long periods of time when I am with friends.
If we get bored, we swap games. Simple enough, so it keeps it fresh. By myself, most depends on what game. If it's just a fun game, not too long, but if it's fun and has a great story, I can play for hours.

I played Dead Space 2 from start to finish alongside a friend (we were in the same Xbox Live party, offering advice to whichever one of us was behind the other) and by the time I was finished I realized I hadn't eaten in hours. And i was sweating my ass off.

First playthrough = Very tense.

When I'm on my PC I generally tend to jump from game to game. If I get completely sick I'll spend five or so minutes on Audiosurf; get a couple songs in and relax or hop on Medieval II Total War and do a battle before I get back to another game.

Really it depends on the game. Oblivion or Fallout can have me absorbed for hours and they feel like minutes; whereas taking over settlements in Just Cause 2 can get a bit routine and thus boring very quickly. It depends how you like the pace of games to be.

However proper games AKA PC Games like BG2 requires long sessions of playing to truly experience the game.
As much as I'm inclined to agree (to a degree) I'd raise a flame shield...

It depends on the genre and on the specific game.

Fighting games require a lot out of you so usually I get enough out of them in 3-5 hour sessions. Jrpgs on the other hand I can play for 12 hours if they're interesting enough and never get enough out of them. I do drink coffee though as it enhances my ability to take the stuff in and enjoy it.

Depends on the game, some I play till I've finished them, some I play for long streatches, others I play for 2 - 5 hours and yet others I'll play for an hour or two here and there.

I tend to prefer to play in long streatches though.

It completely depends on the game. And I'm only focusing on PC gaming here, because: yeah.

Let's take strategy on the table:

Rise Of Nations is my favorite real-time strategy, ever. You dive very intensely to it once you get the general hang of it. And there are so many things to focus on and to remember that it has offered some of the best gaming, and flow experiences I've had. But as it is intense; after a one game, for about 40-60 minutes, you emerge back from the game and with the intensity, you'll want to have a break at least before having another go.

Civilization (IV or V, in this case) is the unquestionable king of turn-based combat. With the much more relaxed pace and endless & intriguing contemplating of matters regarding your civilization, it's relationship, economy, warfare, culture, the list goes on and on.... With all that, accompanied by the healthier pace, you can play it for many hours indeed and notice your thinking one-more-turn, and it's the morning already.

FPS's can also quite tolling, as they are generally active games. Even there are differences. Games where you don't instantly respawn, so you'll automatically have breaks, but might have to think more, like Counter-Strike: Source, can be played for more than 3 hours if you've got the right mindset. But usually doses of about one hour, are optimal. With instant respawning, in games like Battlefield: Bad Company 2, you might notice sometimes having played more than you would play, because the action is more or less, constant, hell, even the loading screens for the next map, offer you interesting statistics, so the attention doesn't brake.

I also smoke, so I'll have 5-minute breaks every hour or so, making games less straining and continuous. But I do agree that many games, especially RPG's or anything campaign-driven, can turn into a chore, after a time. The similarities and the same type of situations, quests and so on, reoccurring to a much more noticeable degree while gaming for longer and being much more familiar and in touch with the game, seem to pop up much more often and it really can become a chore.

So, I usually play from 1 hour to about 8 hours, if I'm really into it, and as being a kind of overkill person at times. And games most certainly can become a chore (I don't see MMO's as anything else than an annoying chore) but it depends heavily on the game, situation, environment and the person him/herself.

For me at least short sessions. Games for me are a way of taking a break from other stuff though so that makes sense. I picked up NBA Jam about two weeks ago and my roomate and I have gone nuts on it (for us.) That translates into about six nights of no more than two hours each night except the second night I had it when we went completely insane and played it for four. (and yes I felt shame but hey sometimes you've just gotta party right?) I guess it depends on who you are.

Games rarely really get to a point where I feel they are a chore and when they do I turn them off. Same as for when games start to become frustrating for any reason (again, this is very rare for me.)

I don't think I'll ever get people who can play them all the time though. Truth and real life aren't just stranger than fiction they are also more fun and have an actual effect on the world around you. I wish more people saw the world as the ulimate MMORPG. Geez just think about all the DA2 criticism recently...... You want more varied environments and side quests? Terra has plenty of both.... heck thanks to climate change you can now enjoy them simultaneously!

Good question/topic Trezu.

As a married man I game for as long as I can when I can. I may not get to switch my PC or console on for days other than checking mail on the PC or whatever, but if I have spare time then I grab it and I can play for hours and hours with no problem at all.

I do get bored during the grind though for example in RPGs doing the levelling and towards the end of a CIV match where turns take for ever to move the millions of units etc.

Playing in small doses (less than 1 hour) actually annoys me if I am honest, because I don't get the opportunity to get immersed.

I see what you're saying and I kind of agree. Marathon sessions are tedious, but manageable little chinks make it seem much better.

Depends on the game. Some games I can only stand for like half an hour at a time, other games I would play for ten hours straight if I had that kind of time.

Usually games feel more interesting if you play them in small amounts. Then again there is no point in playing games like Demon's Souls in small amounts. You never get anything done. Or that's what I think at least.

RPGs tend to make me disappear until I fall asleep, especially Obsidian/BioWare-style games.

This might be a result of me being unemployed.

I often end up playing games for long stretches of time, but almost as often regret doing so. When that fatigue sets in and I just feel like I want to reach the end of the stage, or chapter or get to a good save point, I tend to rush myself. Depending on the game this can be pretty bad to utterly game destroying, sometimes forcing me to restart the game. Of course when this happens I end up rushing through the parts I've already seen and get myself in the same fix all over again. I've ended up spoling quite a few games this way.

Depends on the person, depends on the game, depends on the mood. o_O

Example would be...
WoW, there are some days where I am done with it after 30 mins to an hour, other days I have been known to sink an easy 5+ into it

Minecraft is the same.

I can enjoy Multiplayer games (team fortess 2, counter strike) for a really long time,
but i think single player games shouldn't be very long so it totally depends on the game.
