I went with laptop even though almost everyone will tell you a desktop is superior.

the desktop is probably the cheaper/better option but I wouldn't trade my ability to game on my couch while watching tv for anything.

Alienware nothing! Seriously, Alienware computers are some of the most expensive, whilst having not much power gaming computers. Let me put things into perspective, an alienware with a 3.2Ghz proccesor and a gtx 550 is MORE expensive than the one im building, which has a 3.5Ghz proccesor and two gtx 560 ti!

OT: Well, a gaming desktop is always better, because they can be upgraded and are cheaper than getting a decent gaming laptop. I think people should have the gaming side in their desktops, and use the laptop for simple stuff like web browsing.

If you're in the UK you want a Scan built desktop (http://3xs.scan.co.uk/).

Slightly better pricing than Dell/Alienware, you also get to pick the parts from a wider range and they're better made. Avoid Alienware, you'll pay a lot of cash for not a huge amount of go.

It really just depends on what you want, or what you prefer. Personally, I would much rather use a desktop PC just because I have always preferred using desktop PCs to laptops for everything. It is also much easier to upgrade a desktop PC if you need a new graphics card, more RAM, or to upgrade anything.
Also, if you have the technical know-how, I would suggest building your own computer if you choose to go desktop. It is much cheaper and you will be able to do everything that you want to do at fraction of the price of an Alienware product. Alienware computer's are fine, but you can make a better computer if you know how to.

My laptop is built for gaming, everything about it is built to handle games (it's getting old though) but the biggest problem with laptops is the overheating, any game with slightly large specs will cause increasingly horrible FPS drops after a little bit of time playing, they just get way to hot to handle it, maybe if you got some sort of liquid cooled god laptop (if they exist) otherwise go desktop, I deeply regret getting my laptop

Why exactly do you want an Alienware?

Really, I'm very interested into why people want these things.

Edit: Anyone got any answers that don't start with "They used to be good"?

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I prefer a desktop since I like to upgrade my computer continuously till I need a new motherboard. But laptops do have the benefit of being portable, but you pay extra for the power for them to be gaming, plus any kind of gaming laptop tends to burn battery power pretty fast so they need to be plugged in if your gonna do much gaming.

AlienWare is just a glorified dell at this point, you'd be better off building your own or finding a shop that will custom build for you

Alienware USED to be really awesome and were without a doubt the best gaming PC's you could buy. But now Dell bought them and they are just super pricey dells with overclocking

Desktop PC but not Alienware, because you will be pissing money away just as you would with a Mac.
Anyway desktop PC will give you at least twice the bang for buck then a laptop would.

Better overall is kind of a funny question. I would say it's more of a better "for you" question.

Desktop always wins a power for price contest. You are paying for mobility options with laptops, the hardware is usually lagging behind the desktops, and you can't upgrade a lot of the components.

However, if you need the mobility because you you can't fit your desktop in your backpack and you live out of it sometimes...you can get a laptop with enough power to play the new stuff at a reasonable level for less than the macbooks (1000-1200).

I had traditionally thought the same thing about Alienware...lots more cash and a little flash for the same go (or less) having built my own desktops over the years but actually found that in laptops they ended up being cheaper than the competition in the "14 inch that can play games" category that myself and it appears no one else likes to purchase.

Obviously it was on sale though, Dell occasionally likes to offer pretty decent deals for whatever reasons. So while I wouldn't rule out Alienware entirely, I would of course compare specifications carefully and check out the deals offered.

I would add that if you go the laptop route you may need to consider more than raw power specifications. Some companies may make a laptop with screaming specifications with the construction quality of a carefully assembled house of cards. I had a Toshiba that was a great deal until I typed on it for a while and realized it had the worse keyboard quality known to man. On a desktop this can be easily remedied, laptops you are rather stuck with it unless you turn it into a desktop and defeat the purpose of paying for mobility.

I'd say that a desktop would be a better option because you can upgrade it easily and they're cheaper than laptops. Also I would suggest not going with a branded computer unless you have the money, a custom built computer by a small company will almost always be cheaper than something by alienware or another big company. Also don't get a mac, a lot of games don't run on them (especially indie games) and you're paying too much for what you get.

There is no such thing as Gaming Laptop. There are lappies that can run games averagely. Desktop all the way for gaming.

Look everybody is giving all kinds of different advise, so there is not a very big chance that you would even listern to me. For your own sake, just go to digitalstorm's website. They have the coolest custom PCs ever. If you want any kind of real preformance you will buy a desktop, but really just go and check out Digitalstorm's website and you will immediately fall inlove with their PCs.

I'd avoid laptops like the plague. A desktop is upgradeable and you won't have to worry so much about thermal issues.

Avoid laptops, and avoid Alienware. Alienware does not make good PCs and never has, they are a brand based entirely on marketing.

Go desktop.
It's cheaper, can be upgraded easily and doesn't overheat.

Also, don't buy Alienware.
It's hundreds of pounds for a brand name, a glorified Dell.
Don't waste your money on that.

Laptops are good for surfing the net or writing term papers. They are limited for games. Dollar for dollar, the keyboard will usually not be as responsive, the display not as good, the internal hardware not as powerful, overclocking limited, and you risk it all with overheating issues. If a part breaks down you won't be able to replace it like on a PC. If a part turns out to be a bottleneck in game performance, you won't be able to replace it.

These are all substantial disadvantages you suffer for better portability and convenience. If you must play the latest military shooter on low or medium settings at your local coffee shop, then be my guest.

I've used a laptop for gaming as a backup between PCs and the answer to laptop gaming is: no, just no. Unless there is no other choice, and even then it is a toss up because it is always going to be a gimped experience in all but the most basic games.

Also--agree with never buying an Alienware, mine was utter crap. Yes, I made that mistake one time. They didn't set up the sound right and their proprietary power supply they kept bragging about fried within six months. Stay away from pre-fabs. Research the parts and build it yourself for the greatest joy. It will be a hassle but worth it in the long run.
