I've been out of highschool for 11 years, & I'm sure this hasn't changed much, but teen logic dictated that parties = fun & if you did not party, you had no life. My experience with parties was boredom, my observation was that you had to either be high, drunk, or absolutely guaranteed to get laid to actually enjoy them, & if you're dependent on a drugs & alcohol to have fun, then exactly who is the one with no life?

I can actually see going on a raid in a game with a bunch of friends, or having 1 or 2 buddies come over for classic multiplay being a far more enjoyable & constructive "waste" of time than anything you can do at a party (short of getting laid, which isn't likely for most of the attendees). & exactly how is gaming a "waste" of time? Should be be out farming, cooking, cleaning house, & building cat trees to take up our free time?

So it's Friday night & you have a new game & were invited to a party. Whcih are you going with?

You're right on the dot there, but I would rather be playing my games than out partying. That's probably more because I'm shy and I hate everything about parties. A gaming party, though, I'd be glad to go to.

Oh look, that reverse snobbery thing.

There's a middle ground to be had; kicking arse in your chosen multiplayer title on Fridays, Saturday nights snorting drugs from the derrière of gorgeous people whilst getting aurally assaulted by ridiculously loud music and then off to see your grandmother/fellow churchgoers for lunch on Sunday in your finest (coupled with sunglasses and wishing you didn't have to eat a single thing)... topped off by chilling single player game for mushy brains and bed.

It's entirely possible to enjoy everything, albeit tiring. Don't ask me how I know this.

When I was in highschool, it was party, that was only 5 years ago.

Things don't change, I coach a highschool basketball team and I would have hung over players on Saturday morning once a month. These guys have a stack of opportunities to play games and often even running and jumping for an hour the next morning isn't enough of a negative to make partying seem less attractive than gaming.

Now, I would go out partying because I don't do it at all anymore. I moved to a new city 3 years ago, and I've been out here about twice.

I game most of the time but that's because of money and needing to be able to study, not because gaming is "better".

Oh, well, come on now. No offense dude but it sounds like you are reassuring yourself of something. If you're anything like me, you find parties awkward and difficult and draining and generally prefer to do something you are comfortable with. Totally normal. I mean, maybe I'm presuming too much, but that's how I felt anyway. It sounds like you are just justifying the fact that you don't much like parties.

And I agree. To be honest, I now go to parties more often because I don't want to let friends down. But if it's a party without much interesting people then I won't bother going. And it'll just be an evening of me and Skyrim, or whatever the game of the day is.

I currently have a girlfriend, so the getting laid part isn't really any issue.

I don't drink because I refuse to be like my father and I don't do drugs because fuck that.

MEANWHILE, IN SKYRIM...

Parties have never really been my scene anyway. Like the OP said, mostly they equate to boredom, sitting or standing around making awkward conversation with random strangers and assholes you never intend to socialize with beyond that point. I find it far more enjoyable to spend that time at home, just relaxing, or hanging out with my actual friends driving around aimlessly and just shooting the shit.

I've done all the partying in this lifetime I can be arsed to do.

Now it's my kids turn and i'm more than happy to stay home with my wife to some good old fashioned computer generated homicide.0

Yeah, I've never liked partying much either. I had a drink once and it was...alright. It was a margarita, and I feel like the alcohol just took away from the mango and fruity flavors. And toward the end of the meal I was having a bit of trouble getting my hands to use my fork properly, which was frustrating. My idea of a party is friends over to eat unhealthy food, playing board/card/video games, and watching movies or something. Alcohol just makes things complicated, at least in copious amounts. But I guess that's only if you're concerned about everybody remaining conscious and making good choices.

You do realize you are asking this on a gaming forum, right?

OT-
Having lived with people who preferred to party, I've been thoroughly disillusioned with the "joys" of getting stupidly drunk and acting like an idiot or an asshole to everyone around you, only to forget all about it the next morning and have to guess why everyone hates you.

Also, to everyone who thinks they can handle their alcohol, only a few people can actually do that, and the rest have no fucking clue.

now THAT SAID I think the main thing is the people, its who your doing fun stuff with..weather that be partying, playing left 4 dead LARP'ing or whatever

thats the important thing

New game, definitely.

Not to say that all parties are bad. I could have a small gathering of maybe 3-4 people and it'd be the best party ever. We could play plenty of board + party games and have a great meal and a drink. I like to have fun within my small group of friends.

I live in a city where nightlife is a byword for 'surrounded by loud white bastards, in constant danger of getting punched out of nowhere' so I have no option, really.

Looking forward to leaving Melbourne.

I grew up in Europe and Asia, and I met my partner (to be wife) in China, so we'll probably go back there some time. I also had more fun, and felt safer, while going out in Beijing than in any other city.

Just gotta do my time in the place of my birth for a few years longer.
china?...huh...wow

I put game. Mostly because I was expecting the party to be a beer and drug fest. Now if it was a harry potter marathon with the my friends I would go there because I can play the game another time. Once some kids tried to get me to a party, they went so far as to say they would kidnap me. I spent the day paint balling with my friend. That was much more enjoyable than getting drunk and then puking my guts out.

I'd hate to be the 'why not have both' guy, but it pretty much sums up my thoughts. You essentially have two days and three nights on weekends, that is plenty of time for both.

Of course, if you don't enjoy going out or drinking in general I can understand I guess, I just so happen to enjoy it (in small doses anyway, I wouldn't go out two nights in a row). Party Friday night, game on Saturday night is a good breakdown for me, then a university cram session on Sunday haha.

Combine the two and that's when it's at its best though. Some mates, a couple of cartons of beer and a couple of Xbox's hooked up for some local multiplayer in Halo/Call of Duty/, now that's a party.
