The double bladed battle axe.
If it was good enough for the Vikings, then it's good enough for me!

Also, the long bow.

Yeah, fuck going against an army, over the wall, into the castle, and stabby stabby!
or, fuck going against an army, onto the wall (at night of course), and shooty shooty!

Personally, I don't think you can beat a good sword. None of this 2-handed nonsense, single-handed swords make carrying shields possible, and I like a bit of reassurance in battle =P

I'm gonna have to go with a mace on this one; none of that namby-pamby strategic dueling bulls**t. I prefer to just get up close and cave in their skulls.

Realistically, I'd carry a spear and a shield (if I was lucky) because it was the spear, more than any other weapon, that decided the outcome of a battle. The sword may indeed be the queen of weapons and a good thing to have around when the fighting truly gets close (too close for a spear), but until that happens, I'd place my bet on a stout spear and solid shield.

Were I not doomed to be among the fodder, I'd obviously want to be a Knight armed with a lance with a trusty steed. Even in 1257, I could count on my armor to make me all but impervious to many of the dangers on the battlefield and since I was clearly born to rule and fight my own martial prowess and quality weaponry would give me such an advantage on the barely trained rank and file that they would be mere chaff in the wind before me. And, should my horse or lance fail me, I'd opt for a flanged mace. Small enough to carry on your person when armed with heavier weapons, the flanged mace represents one of the most efficient bludgeons in history - able to tear flesh, break bones and crumple armor with relative ease.

Id go with a sword, simple, effective and it dosent take a genius to use. Although it does take alot of training to master. In a real life war however i doubt id last long enough to become really good with a blade.
Any weapon can be wielded by an amature with some effectiveness, but a sword represnents an art all it's own. Most of the famous swords act as both your strongest weapon and your greatest defence, Most any weapon relies almost entirely upon some other factor to provide defense, be it simple weight in manpower for many of the spear and pike formations of the day, or perhaps a quality shield or suit of armor. One CAN leverage an axe or a spear or a halberd into the defensive, but transition from offense to defense is so cumbersome with such weapons that one is better served simply attemption to remain on the offense and hoping for the best. In the case of the truly heavy weapons and pole-arms, there only real defense was simply not being hit as such weapons could bite deeply into most any armor and could easily penetrate a stout shield or brush aside a defending sword. In the case of the halberd, your only defense came from your armor and distance, and should either of those be compromised your options for surival diminish rapidly.

Scenario: It's 1257. You've just been selected to be part of a medieval mercenary army.
Are we standing in some reasonable sense of a formation or is this free for all/one on one scenario?

I've always liked bows! (I used to shoot some arrows every summer at my grandparent's house, and it was great)

crossbow i guess...

*puts down scythe with a look of disappointment*

well, it would be for the better really. i may be useless with both of them, but i'm sure i would be at least slightly better with the crossbow.

Longbow, because the English used them to kick the French's ass- so all I have to do is side with the English and enjoy my tea and crumpets with bloody murder.

Also, it means I'm on the back lines and I get to run away from battle first.
