The US presidential system: winner stays in, with a two-turn limit. Or a six-turn limit, or a ten-turn limit, your choice.
Hmm, I like this one alot
We just usually swap with no real order, we don't overly care if we have to sit out a while.
It all sorts itself out really...

Alternativley, we swap every death, its quicker, and involves people quicker, even if it only works in FPS and some RPG's...

Looser goes out, winner can give their turn up whenever they want. Owner of the console is games master, he has the power to tell the winner to GTFO, but he also has 2 votes in "what do we play next?"

don't want to reward losers as no one will want to win.
That's the main issue with that method, which makes me say losers give it up. Usually implement a rule like after 3 wins in a row the winner has to give it up.

Usually if I'm the winner I offer to give up the controller, unless someone has called that they are "playing winner". In which case I accept their challenge and step aside on the next round. Usually when there's a group of people playing say, a racing or fighting game, I derive as much fun from watching as playing - unless the people playing are atrocious.

I really like the idea of Winner Out, unless it becomes a tendency for people to try become second place instead of first place, then the whole system breaks down of course.

Winner stays, loser gives up a kidney.
WHY WON'T PEOPLE PLAY VIDEO GAMES WITH ME!!!!?
I have connections to the black market. Losing to you would simply cost me money and time. Sure, let's play.

OT: loser out. Winner decides for his/herself whether or not to be gracious and step down after a while, otherwise the losers will keep cycling and get to play at some point.

Winner plays on, there is not much things more rewarding than dethroning a 10 game straight winner.

Loser out, although I tend to try to not play games when there are more people than controllers around.

I can't remember the last time I used such a rule.... N64 maybe? before the time of system links?

I prefer at rotation rule anyways.

When I first saw the Thread title I thought this would be about giving up Video games indefinitely.

For me that would NEVER be an option.

The winner out method basically punishes the players for being good at the game, so the winner should get the controller.

The looser gets drunk faster (though I've never seen why taking shots is a losers' prize). Either that or they've got more time to drink because they're not playing.

When it comes to playing in the arcade, the winner always stays.
This stops people throwing the match to stay in the game.

Its cruel to new players however, and gives them little chance to participate in the game.

ooh... no no no... winner takes the shots.

Turning chess into a drinking game turns nasty very fast. Each peace is shot, and if you want to take that peace, you must drink the shot.

This.

Loser out, Winner takes a shot.

Makes sure that the winner doesn't dominate for too long.
