Title says most of it. To elaborate what I am asking is what do you think will happen if global warming goes along the predicted path and melts the poles.

My theory is that the increased temperature will increase rainfall; which will gather as snow on the poles keeping the water level about the same. Also, correct me if I'm wrong but most of the ice is underwater; meaning that when it melts wouldn't water levels go down?

EDIT: I'm not asking for you to reply that global warming doesn't exist, I'm asking what you think will happen if the world heats up the way it is predicted

we're all gonna die omgomg

Honestly global "warming" is a misnomer because it certainly isn't getting any warmer up here in Massachusetts.

I dunno what will happen. Water levels rise because of polar bears melting or something is what I heard.

I'm not a climatologist, so I'm not really informed enough to make a good decision. (like most of the people who debate about global warming...)

Global warming has happened before, so I am asuming the ice caps will freeze again, sometime in the future. I don't think too much about global warming, it's inevitable as death, so I put it in the back of my mind.

I'm sorry, Bears melting? Gonna get real hot apparently.

We need to grow more rain forests, that's the only solution that sounds reasonable to me. And if this is to be true, then we'd all DIE! Also, no, most ice isn't underwater, that's a common misconception. I don't remember the source, but most of the ice is actually floating, so it's less ice from the beginning than we might think.

Yeah, Most ice on icebergs are underwater, but thats not the same with glaciers. With the gulf stream stopping its pitiful supply of warm water/air up here to the UK we need a backup, Hello global warming![/I]

After all the ice has melted, the sea level will have risen 70 ft. Thats enought to leave the head of the Statue of Liberty sticking out of the water.

It has been proven that global warming isn't a man made occurrence. The Earth used to be MUCH warmer than it is today. During the Industrial Revolution, one of the most pollutant producing times, the Earth actually got COLDER. Volcano's produce more CO2 in 1 year than Human's do by far. Decaying leaves? CO2. Cow Farts? CO2. The worst thing that can happen is that we will have to move away from the current coasts and the land masses will change because of the rising oceans, not a big deal if you ask me, more scenic views!

Well the water will rise but it will take a long time for anything significant to happen

I guess it depends how much warmer it gets, sure increased snowfall might offset melting for a while, but if it gets too warm then even that will melt to.

As a little food for thought, and if you can get past this persons nonsensical pseudo-philosophical ramblings, this worldbuilding thought experiment [http://www.worlddreambank.org/D/DUBIA.HTM] makes what I consider to be a semi-compelling case that in the long run a warmed up Earth might not be such a bad thing.

That's pretty much my opinion on it.

There's so many different views and heaps of lies thrown around about global warming that it's very hard to tell if it's an actual threat, or not. Only non-bias climatologists would know the true answers.

Strangely enough this came up in a tutorial I had with a tutor at Uni the other week.
Its true that volcano's give off huge quantities of CO2 etc, but we are adding that small excess to it, which is what makes the difference. IR radiation is a method of heat transferrence from the sun to the Earth, and the molecules in the upper atmosphere absorb various wavelengths. Mostly H2O absorbs it, but CO2 absorbs in the 'gap' where the H2O doesn't, giving us the global warming problem. With emissions as they are, we're set for a rise of a few degrees centigrade in global temperature. The north pole melting isn't that big an issue, as the floating ice already displaces large volumes of water anyway, its the south pole melting that will make the sea levels rise, by around 20 meters or so.
Vesi made some sound points but it has to be considered that pretty much anywhere below current sea level is fucked.
On the other hand, eventually the atmosphere will be saturated with CO2 and anymore we put up there will have no effect. Its a gamble really.
But anyway you look, increasing heat, melts southern icecap, sea levels rise.

NOTE: I'm not saying Im right, I may be as wrong as the next guy. However from a chemist's (basic) point of view, thats the general idea.

Two hackers were cracking into a global warming database, and found out the scientists were messing with the data, so the heat seemed to get hotter. So yes, if this dose not prove global warming is fake, then it proves that it is not as bad as we thought.
