so, scenario for you:

you awaken from your slumber to find a figure hovering over you. he explains that he is from the afterlife, and he presents you with an offer. you can either

a) have the powers of a god. literally, any powers you want (with the exception of destroying planets, but seriously, why would you do that). you can also have all knowledge you want. you will be immortal, and your looks will be whatever you want them to be, but after 100 years, you will die. once you die, no matter what you did with your life, you just rot. no brain activity in the slightest, no afterlife, just nothingness.

b) you will live a normal life, but once it is over, you will be guaranteed a place in the afterlife. lets just say the afterlife is a good place, where you can pretty much have whatever you like, and anybody who stays on the 'right' path will join you (and any others who have previously made it there). the catch is you CANNOT commit suicide to reach the afterlife early, and you do not know the 'right' path, so you have no guarantee that your loved ones from this life will be joining you.

if you fail to choose out of the two, nothing happens, but you will never get the opportunity again.

so, which do you choose, and why?

personally, i'd pick the afterlife, but being the all powerful would be pretty fun xD

EDIT: i should point out, in this situation, the figure will explain that there definitely is an afterlife, so try to make the decision based upon this newfound knowledge.

Wow that's pretty hard... My first instinct is to go with the power. I would love to have that, but knowing that it will end at a certain point is a bit crappy. But 100 years is a long time, it might be worth it. Having an afterlife where I can have anything I want forever sounds pretty awesome, but if there's no guarantee that the people I care about will be there then is there really any point to it? It would just be hollow endless hedonism. I guess I'll go with the power. I can have fun with that and it won't really matter if I made the wrong choice after I die because I won't be aware of it. Then again if I live that long it would be pretty crap to see everyone I care about die... Can I use my power to make them live as long as me?

I don't care much for a "perfect afterlife". I like the ups and downs and inperfections of living.

guaranteed placed in the afterlife, i wouldn't be able to enjoy having god-like powers knowing that i would be condemned to nothingness for ever.

Probably afterlife. I mean, after the first few hundred years there, the benefits of that start to pull ahead. and that lead will just keep growing right?

The power. I just find it interesting to watch life, and god powers would let me do so pretty well.

And of course, I'll give some random people superpowers. Because, hell, why not? Make things interesting!

I hate the idea of more aimless existence after death, so Godlike powers with a guaranteed oblivion after death would be perfect.

depends, if you get tired of being, there's nothing you can do about it.

hmmm, i did say any powers you like, but lets look at it this way. you cannot extend life, but you can make certain things happen so they live longer. for example, you could kill a person, and make an organ donor card appear in their wallet. remember, you also have infinite knowledge, you could make them live as long as you, invent cures of cancer or AIDs etc, but eventually you would run out of time, and they would carry on living, knowing they would never see you again.

I enjoy life as it comes, and if there is a bit leftover, then hell with it, use that too! Therefore I would have the god-powers now!

I believe nothing happens after death, which I am fine with, so probably God Powers. I'd like to have fun ruling Earth for a good hundred years.

Afterlife. The life I have right now is descent, and I can always improve it. Also, I am really afraid of death, so an afterlife is a really comforting thought.

I do not belive in afterlife so I will choose god powers.
Wait, what? You believe in God like powers though? The logic of whether something exists or not was thrown out the window on a question like this.

OT: Afterlife, 100 years is too short no matter what compared to an eternity of bliss.

God powers. And with those powers I will break my bonds of time and be truly immortal. And even if I can't, 100 years with god powers would be fine. And once I hit death, I don't care about the afterlife anymore. Instead of having a longer life, I just live a fuller life due to my powers.

god powers, so that i may use those 100 years to make the world be as good of a place as i can for everyone else.

its already my goal in life, so this just gives me unlimited power to do so.

powers of gods for a hundred years?
sign me up ^^

i can do so bat-shit crazy epic stuff, like turning this very world into heaven on earth and creating a Star Trek-esque society, people will remember me in millenia to come. like Achilles. or Iulius Caesar, Lao-Tse, Sokrates, bodhisattva Gautama
...while the concept of an eternal afterlife is highly overrated.

I AM GUNTHER! NOW THERE'S FIRE!!

You're taking a lot out of the godlike powers. To the point it's just superpowered, not godlike. Especially since a hundred years isn't that long in the context of superpowers.

Anyway, I'd take the power, and then spend the next hundred years experimenting, trying to find a way out of the instant death thing. Doesn't matter if it's impossible, it's still someone I'd try to do. Not because I'd be panicking over death, but someone just came and offered me immense power and then said "you'll never be capable of this". Best challenge ever. From giving other people power, to cloning, to attempting to redefine from the deals context who I am in regards to both the power and the consequence, to messing with the metaphysical concept of death, to time travel, and so much more.

And then just when my times about to end, I'd use my power to call up the spirit and tell it that it never fulfilled the terms of the deal, because I'm clearly lacking in power if none of these ways allowed me to circumvent the consequences. Even if it doesn't give a shit, I'd still enjoy making the argument. Just the kind of guy I am.
