Steam, since they deal more with new games, but I would certainly not like GOG gone.

Steam. They're a professional business. GoG has yet to do anything to shed this image they created of themselves as some prank loving teenagers who should not be taken seriously. And since they don't want to be taken seriously, I'm happy to not give them any of my money.

I personally am not a fan of Steam as I tend to play games offline or am not able to use the internet. I have never before heard of Good Old Games, but I shall definitely check it out. It's all a matter of opinion.
Am I just playing games that happen to work offline? Because I have never had a problem with steam and I play games all the time offline, never had a problem. Start in offline mode, play game. It ALWAYS works for me. Am I just lucky? Because I have heard this complaint about steam and its never affected me.
You're not lucky. Everyone who complains about not being able to play Steam games offline is just a liar. I've been disconnected from the internet in the middle of playing something I've gotten of Steam, and not only did it not kick me from the game, it didn't even make any fuss whatsoever that my internet went out. It let me keep playing and I didn't even notice I had no internet until I exited the game and was informed by Windows that my connection had been lost.

Really, I don't understand why Steam haters can't just give honest reasons as to why they dislike the platform instead of constantly spewing forth that blatant lie from their mouths, but rest assured that they're dead wrong. You can play Steam games offline. The only time you can't is when the game has extra DRM (hello Ubisoft and EA, how are you assholes doing today?), but that's not Steam's fault. Blame the publisher for the terrible DRM and for being dumb enough to include their DRM on top of Steam's DRM.

I prefer Steam, mostly because of the overlay and social aspects of it. I can't honestly say which is "better" though. GOG is rather awesome for anything from more than 5 years ago and Steam is great for new releases.

Gog.com for me as I'm able to play offline, keep the installation file without a need for a client program and the games are generally very cheap and usually work off the bat regardless of age.
But then again Steam does do a decent job of helping to link up multiplayer co-op games with friends in titles such as Left 4 Dead. Oh and the occasional sale does help on both of 'em

Steam if I absolutely need to buy online. Retail if I can help it.

Downloading new games at 150 kb/s? No thanks.

GoG.. cause.. well if you have to hurt the industry by buying via digital distribution, then at least buy from a location where you dont get a proprietary rental copy that limits your ability to do with the software what you wish. Stupid DRM garbage.

Buying via GoG is closer to "ownership" than buying anything on steam ever

Well, I am happy for you, good sir, I personally am not a fan of Steam. I have tried several times in the past to play games offline, unsuccessfully, and I just play other games.
Well yeah I believe you. I just want to know if its specific games that do this, or if steams not updated properly like someone said above? If its specific games is there a list, because I will avoid getting those games on steam if thats the case.
Perhaps I'm not doing something right. That's often been the cause of a headache or two for me. I have a question for you: Do you think it's wrong if I buy say, Portal 2, then pirate a non-steam version of it?
I don't think so.

Well friend its more than just offline play.

Just the first 2 examples off the top of my head. Say you had already completed the game but wanted to cheat on a second playthrough. With the GoG copy, you would be able to, With steam you would not.

Lets say its a decade from now, You feel compelled to replay W2...However Your computer is running Windows Uberocity, and W2 will not run on Windows Uberocity without file modifications and compatibility settings. With GoG version you would be able to manually fix that... with steam you would not. The client in and of itself IS a form of DRM as you have to validate play via the client, offline or online.

Now not relevant to the quote, but reinforcing the overall issue. With Steam, forwhatever reason you have managed to piss Valve off. They have decided to bludgeon you to death with their banhammer. Now, your copy of W2 that you potentially paid full price is completely lost and useless to you. With a physical copy.. it doesnt matter what you do or who you piss off, your copy is still just as usable as it always was.

So yes, GoG whenever you have reason to use DD, Steam for Valve based games and cheap indie games. Physical retail copies for the largest bulk of what you buy.

GOG because games acually arent FUCKING EXPENSIVE there.
I mean seriously, 1 DOLLAR IS NOT THE SAME AS 1 EURO!
SCREW YOU VALVE!
I find that hilarious (and pathetic) that Valve does that, 50 Euro is WAAAAAY more than 50 dollars. (Shut up, I know it isn't all that much but when you don't have a job it is quite a bit.)

You can run steam games in compatibility mode, and mess with file settings. They still work. I don't know what you mean by "cheat". Do you mean run a trainer? Havent tried that, but you can run the console just as easy with steam existing.

What is this shit?
Fristly, if I want to 'cheat' on a single-player game, then I've never had any trouble doing so. Trainers, savegame editors, mods, all work fine.
Secondly, I wasn't aware there was a problem with losing access to your games. I've only ever heard that from people that don't use steam, and one guy who was pirating.

Except, you know, the fact that offline mode doesn't work for quite a few people, myself included. I've tried every fix that's been suggested to me, Steam remembers my log in details so there's no issues there, and yet every. single. time. I try to play something in offline mode, I'm always given an error message about having to connect first or some bullshit like that. It'd be fine if it actually had to update the game, but it rarely ever does. I'll log in when my internet's available to me again and is there a patch for the game I was trying to play? No, not one.

So no, not everyone who states that they can't play offline is lying and it's plain silly to make sweeping assumptions like that, and before it's brought up, no, the games I try to play aren't EA/Ubi games, mainly because I don't have any EA/Ubi games on my PC full stop.

Now that I've got that off my chest, I'd probably still vote for Steam, though GoG for when there are older games that I couldn't get hold of otherwise.

I prefer gog by a large margin. They have heart, something that Valve and Steam sorely lacks.

I use gog a lot, but mostly for older games.

I use GamersGate if I want a new game, seeing as they are a lot cheaper to me, and I quite like Paradox.

I use Steam for sales.

Never the less, I have 200 games on Steam, and only about 30 on gog and probably 20 on GG. Goes to show that Steam has frequent sales.

But gog is by far the better shop.

I'd never heard of GamersGate until reading your post so I decided to give it a look and I see Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition on the front page for ?2.50

Bless you sir.
