Are they? Are they really?

I haven't been pressed to make a Google account unless I somehow did so without realizing it back in 2006.

I have a friend that came over about the time that google forced people to associate their youtube account with their gmail account. At the time neither of us know what the story was. I was going to show her someting on youtube. She was checking her gmail at the time, so logged in. Youtube had a tiny prompt that I accidently skipped. I knew I skipped something, but I figured I'd find out what was what later.

Long story short; that thing I skipped was a prompt to MERGE association with my youtube account with her Gmail. The association cannot be undone. Two unrelated people with associated accounts. It's kinda lame.

Fuck google. It's amazing how they've strong-armed people like this.
Soon, they'll know everything and will take over the world.

Such a simple name. Such a strangle-hold grip on the internet.

I don't mind the linking. What I DO mind is Google shoving itself down your throat.

Oooh, an advertisement for Google on a site OWNED by Google that, in order to do most things on this site owned by Google, you need to have an account with Google, which recomends you to have an email account with Google, and they recomend you have the search browser MADE by Google...
I WONDER IF THEY WANT ME TO USE THINGS MADE BY GOOGLE?!?!?!?!?

I am very confused as to what is so intrusive about making a bogus account and tying it to it, never to log in again. If you are that worried about "THE MAN" having your phone number go pay cash for a throw away one.

Also get over yourself your are not have as important as you think you are.

Use only a Google coffee mug if you want to continue using this service. Now that'll be the day.

I am pretty adverse to it because I will never use it and have already had an inactive account jacked and my xboxlive and steam accounts jacked as a result because it rejected my normal email account. Will I suffer the same thing with youtube plus even though other people say they do not experience the same problem it is requesting I give my phone number and refuses to let me continue without entering, either it is a glitch or I am being singled out?
That's weird. I just made a new Google account to try to confirm this and it doesn't ask or say anything about the phone number thing. As for the jacking, I have about twenty different inactive Google accounts and none of them ever caused me any problems. I guess you're just having really bad luck for some reason :/

Now where did I say I was or was not important, I was expressing my irritation and seeing who agreed or disagreed and quite frankly I am pleasantly surprised by the large ratio of people who were polite when they disagreed no thanks to your passive aggressive remark.

P.S. You have a typo thar.

AH WELL CRAP! On another note I just created a google account (which still has me miffed) and it did not ask for my phone number again but it kept refreshing and erasing the information I was entering. When I finally did get it out using a newly create hotmail account with fake credentials the idiot sent me 7 confirmation emails, the same number of times it refreshed. So yeah it appears that I do have bad luck.

I can understand in the OP's situation where this would be troublesome. For me, on the other hand, I loved how easy it was using just a gmail to easily transition to a new Youtube account.

From past experience, having to sign up for one main website to use another is not an uncommon practice. I was happy that Google did not force a bunch of random toolbars and downloads to join while linking to other websites.

You're totally right, never have I been more coerced into buying Google products. Google-brand toothpaste, Google-brand chocolate bars... What's next? Google-brand children?

They should truly be ashamed of themselves.

The part with the cellphone is pretty damn annoying. Mine isn't supported. Thank God I made an account before it started asking for them. And I was planning to make one for my friend who can't do it either, but apparently you can only make one account in a computer before having to use your phone number. Blargh.

What browser are you using? Might have something to do with that.

I just logged in and out of my Youtube account and, like always, it asked if I wanted to link my Google account (that doesn't exist), but, there's a "skip this for now" option under it. Is it only mandatory for NEW accounts? But, the OP said he has had his account for 4 years and I've only had mine for maybe 2 years.

It's their site. Don't see why integration should be a problem when they just want to centralize everything.

That sounds like what a terminator would say!!! KILL HIM! (or in this case a Googlenator)

I have the same problem when I log in, what I do is just click on the Youtube homepage link on the Youtube site and problem solved.
