Alright guys here's the deal, i need to write a seven to ten page paper on My Little Pony: Friendship is magic. Now it's a persuasive paper so i need to go one way or the other. My poll will consist of this. What is your view on the show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and its fanbase known as "Bronies" or "Pegasisters", and if you wish to include a why that might also be helpful, for i need opinions on both sides of the argument. I'll be back to check on this in a bit, til then, have fun

And if we could please not have any flame wars? this is for a survey and i rather not sift through all of that crap. thanks again.

Normally I'd say just "Not in favor" but the fan-base (not all of them mind you but a few crazies) seems to think that if you don't like the show, you must be insecure about your own sexuality and that must be the only reason you don't like the show. The shows own fans now yell at people who post in the normal thread because it got so bad...

I found the show boring. It wasn't anything special; a lot of slapstick comedy that was obvious as hell (boy, we JUST cleaned this house, I sure hope that Rainbow Dash doesn't crash into here! That'd be crazy!) with the normal "children's moral of the story" at the end of the show.

OK children's show at best.

I'm a fan of MLP: Friendship is Magic, but I hate the term 'pegasister', so I refer to myself as a 'brony'.

Personally, I love the fanbase - in my experience, and for the most part, they tend to be a very accepting and well-rounded group of individuals. There are some people who take their fanaticism too far, or who condemn those who don't share their opinions, but the same can be said of any fandom, and condemning MLP for it just isn't fair.

At the end of the day, Lauren Faust and the team were quite clever when initially putting together MLP - they wrote it in such a way that while apparently targeting kids, there were elements in there that even adults could benefit from and appreciate. It's just a well written show. c:

I think the fan base is wasted on MLP. I've seen it a few times before and I cannot for the life of me understand why people think its so funny. Because its controversial for men to like it I guess? Doesn't make much sense to me. As far as modern cartoons go I'd much prefer Adventure Time or Regular Show.

Men aren't meant to like this show! ZOMG! Let's all spout it's greatness constantly so everyone sees how ironic and cool we all are!

Please.

Well, I can't help but suspect that some of the interest in the brony fanbase is that it gives people social permission to be as emotional and sweet and gentile as can be. Not to say that this is most people or that people need permission to feel as they do, but don't people often associate themselves with subcultures (over just being a fan) because of the behavior within them? There really aren't many fanbases for that, and even fewer socially acceptable for men, so yeah. I would say that part of it is by virtue of the same social stuff that causes the controversy.

That being said, I do enjoy the show. Its a very family-friendly show that's competent in a lot of ways, from animation to voice acting to really putting effort into illustrating the moral of the day. Of course, I just like children's media, (Fuck yeah, Kipper the Dog) and I just got lucky when this show got a fanbase and I can get more ponies through the fanbase.
(That video with Derpy and the lava lamp? ADORABLE)

That being said, the fanbase does suffer from a lot of leaky members who keep gushing about the show and earn it and the fans in general a lot more ire than it deserves. Just look at how mad people got about "All the Mass Effect threads!" or "All the zombie threads" or whatever the forum flavor of the week is.

And for the record, ponies were a thing on the Escapist long before MLP FIM was even put into production. Just look up Pony Jam or how the Pony badge was one of the first badges on the site.

I'm indifferent. I'm not interested in My Little Pony, but I'm not hostile to its fans either.

I would fully expect this poll to end up parabolic with enough participants. It seems, for some strange reason, an extremely polarizing issue.

OT guess how I voted, clue: look at avatar.

Well that's the thing most people have trouble with here on the outside: we don't really know the community outside of the non-Pony related sites we visit. I really have no problem at all with bronies. I think some of the memes that have spun out of its popularity are pretty funny and most of the guys here with MLP avatars are generally alright people. I suppose I just don't understand why this kind of phenomenon hasn't happened already with some other cartoon considering I personally don't find the show all that funny.

Anything that makes people less obnoxious on the internet is okay in my book. I just give bronies a hard time because my girlfriend and sister both love the show and I like pissing them off :p

The show itself, meh, nothing that hasnt done before.

The fans: Meh, i dont care. Just keep it to yourself. I dont need you gushing over it all day/ posting memes/ videos about it all the time. Too much of anything gets annoying after a while.

Yeah, I like the show. Sure it can be predictable, and some of the puns can be cringe-worthy, but overall its a great cartoon. No, despite what a lot of fans say, its not for everyone. I personally enjoy it because of the light-hearted cheerfulness and lack of cynicism and negativety. Also, I enjoy the geeky undertones and references the show makes. Id say its a kids cartoon, but a sophisticated one (as sophisticated as a kids cartoon can be). The writing is intelligent and I appreciate the fact that they manage to make the show funny without resorting to crude humor or irony in order to appeal to an older demographic.

The fanbase, in general. I don't think ever met a nicer bunch of people on the internet. The fact that they management to be welcoming and tolerant on the internet of all places impresses me. Obviously I'm not including the fringe group of obnoxious, shove it in your face fans, nor the creepy fans who feel the need to sexualize the show.

And, yes, I'm one of the fans who sighs almost every time I see an MLP related thread nowadays. Although its not nearly as bad as it was in the past, these threads unfortunately tend to become flamewars really quickly.

There can be no guarantees.
You started a MLP thread. We all know what that means . . .
True, true, but don't provoke them. Let's try to at least get to page 2 without any flaming (and seeing as this is a MLP thread, I'm sure it will make it to page 2)

Yup, this describes my take on the subject pretty damn accurately. I remember the first time I ran into a MLP thread. My innocence was lost, that day.

Captcha: Tune in. It seems Captcha is "strongly in favor" in this poll...

Oh, I like the show. I'm not a die hard, knows every background pony on sight, goes out and buys every toy available brony, but I am a fan. I saw so many people talking about it that I had to watch a few episodes, and now I watch it every time there's a new one. Saturdays are great days to look forward to.
I'm sure you've already heard all the reasons why people like it: Good writing, funny characters, nice show, etc. Go watch Movie Bob's last Mail Bag episode and he sums it up pretty well.
However, I would like to add one other thing--the creators know about the brony fans, and as such, they throw in little shout outs to the fans in episodes. Derpy is the biggest example of that. There are also episodes where famous characters are made into ponies--or at least the ponies look like they're trying to be the famous characters. Thor was one, and more recently Doc Brown from Back to the Future was one. And show that does that is miles ahead of other shows in my opinion.

I love MLP as a show but it wasn't right away as it took me half of the first season just to get into it. I was surprised both by the quality of the animation and the writing itself which brings some balance to most of the "serious business" that we get with everything else. The writing itself isn't always original but it helps a lot that the show is very self-aware and is willing to make fun of itself. It's also great that even when it does use old tropes, they find a way to make it interesting or twist it in a different matter.

Bronies themselves have completely took me off guard and still amaze me almost every week. The level in quality in the fan created content is just outstanding, The music, The art, the writing. I was also surprised by how generous they have been, raising $100,000 in donations for charities in the first year of existing. I have been to a few meetups (one of them had 30+) and have meet some great people, highlight is we had security called on us when we raided Toy'r'us and the security guard knew who we were right away.

We have our idiot zealots too (that every fan base gets) that flame people who don't watch, it's kinda disappointing as most of us frown upon it but we can't exactly stop them. It would be great if we could talk abut ponies and not have them turn into a flame wars but it seems people on both sides of the argument don't want to just relax. I'm well aware the show isn't for anyone and that is just fine.

I am not a fan of the show. Animated shows just aren't my thing at all, especially when it's trying to be "cute" among other things. I haven't seen much of it, but from what I have seen, just... uhh. It also appears to be quite feminine, but I don't know that for sure.

As for the shows fans, I don't know. I see lots of people with pony avatars, but that is about the extent of my knowledge about so-called "bronies". I assume it would be like everything else, some of them are pretty cool people while others are complete fucking idiots.

So I guess I'll just pick a standard "not in favour".

Im a brony myself, and I'm for it when it comes to grown men and women who genuinely love a cute, wholesome, innocent show. But when it comes to clop-clop or even sexy drawings of them, that's what gives us a bad name and casts us as pedophiles.

So, I'm for it, but to a point.

I like the show quite a bit. I even look through a lot of the fan made stuff, and Although I dislike a great multitude of the fiction I come across(A surprising amount is dark, which I just can' get into on account of it being a highly inappropriate tone for me), much of it has quality that I an see.I would probably even buy a couple pieces of merchandise, If I had the balls to go.

The Bronies themselves(At least in the group here) are not(mostly) the zealots some people paint them to be, nor are they the saints(mostly) that others also paint them to be. They are, as cliche as this is going to sound, just people. We have our crazies, our idiots, Our intellectuals and our share of good people. We have depressed people, happy people, and people inbetween. We've pretty much got whatever any large group of people has, meaning that I love the brony community as much as I love any other fanbase. Which is a lot.
