Having been posting in the "Fashion accessories that piss you off" thread, I noticed a few people complaining about gothic clothing.

Being a kind of goth, alternative fashion designer, corsetiere (I make authentic waist reducing body training corsets using steel bones), and general weirdo, I'm used to it. But it always fascinates me to know why people feel that way. I can understand why people don't find it aesthetically pleasing (I feel the same way about mainstream fashions).

So what about it don't you like? Indulge my curiosities, if you will.
Or, if you like it, let me know what about it you like and why.

Itz not metalz... At all...
The only word i can match with Goth is pretentious.
Goth isn't supposed to be 'metal'... They're not even nearly the same genre...

I'm in general much more fond of steampulp/victorian fashion than specifically gothic stuff. I like a lot of colours, ribbons and flowing designs and general happy, exuberant clothes. However, I like some of the formal, last century aesthetic that goth clothes have going for them, and I'm very fond of my corset.

Yeah, they are completely different. I had a very metal influence when I was growing up and my style was completely different what you would call goth.

To be honest I actually dig it. Though it probably wouldn't suit me (though you never know 'til you try it!) I'm all for alternative fashion. As a footwear designer I see a lot if different styles and love it when I find something that is a little bit out of the ordinary (but definitely cool!)

Completely depends. I do not like all that hardcore stuff with the corsets and shaved heads and all, but parts of the style can be really cool.
It's too wide a style to really say anything about it as a whole.

For example, Stocking from PSG is awesome.

<3 steampunk

Goth has become such a broad term.. Trad, cyber, vic, steam, street, rave, etc.

A lot of what I design is 'happy', because my silliness slips through into my designs if I'm in that sort of mood. And I am a shameless part of the 'Hello Kitty cult'. Lol.

Pirates are just cooler

But honestly, ive never had any real problem with goths. I generally find myself wearing dark clothes beause its just easier to not fuck it up.

I should really buy some new clothes....

Some of the circus type people I know live/dress by that philosophy. It's almost foolproof.

I think it can look quite hot on a girl as long as it's not overdone. If the latter happens, though, it just looks ridiculous.

Same can be said for any genre though. If people don't know how to dress themselves, it generally looks pretty horrendous.

If we're talking about Old-school Batcave scene Neo-Romantic movement (later dubbed "Goth" by brittish reporters), it would look something like this (and be awesome):

Siouxsie Sioux being one of the original influences for the style, both visually and through her music.

If we're talking about American Mall-Goths and Hot Topic... it's a pathetic over-commercialized rip off that has no business existing.

I am incredibly grateful that Hot Topic is yet to appear in Australia.

It's mostly an American thing... and thank goodness for that, Europe is kept relatively pure by comparison.

I believe the UK has also been infiltrated by their mass produced filth, just not to the same degree as the US.
