so i have come to notice that a lot of people steal other peoples kills on GOW 3, and this annoys me, i don't do it unless they are about to get back up, otherwise i will usually leave the kill for the person that downed him if they are nearby, this is the only time i think kill stealing is acceptable, any other time is just douchey.

the reason it annoys me is because to get the weapon challenges you actually have to kill them, not just down them and let someone else get it, and since most people will average around 10 kills a game it takes ages to get the challenges, and when half of your kills get stolen it takes even longer.

Now please be honest,

Do you steal kills?

Edit: shitty poll didnt work so please answer:

Yes (Why)
Nope (Why)
Im like the OP

In a game like GoW, where players can revive other players, I don't care who gets the down, I'm making sure the guy isn't getting back up.

You get points for the amount of damage you deal anyway, not the number of kills.

A kill without dealing damage is 10 points, while the damage is in the hundreds.

I don't play GoW, but for other games all I can say is:
I shoot things. Sometimes I'll shoot things that someone else shot more than me. Shit happens.
I find the accusation of intentional "kill-stealing" to be on of the dumbest things in online gaming, safe for (mostly older) MMORPGs where you could actually steal something valuable and not just arbitrary numbers on a leaderboard.
If you want to avoid kill-stealing play 1-on-1 deathmatches, in a team oriented match there's no way around it.

I see an enemy, I shoot the enemy before he sees me and shoots back. In theory, I'd like to believe we could go around letting people get their own kills, but particularly in multiplayer the way systems works means that there is a chance the enemy beats your guy, then gets a drop on you and kills you before you take him out.

It's similar to a risk/reward dealio, except the consequences have no real direct bearing on anything other than the game, so people will always take the reward.

The only time i've played a shooter with any form of seriousness was during the league games of Unreal Tournament.

Then we played as a team not for individual kills. As long as the team won then the team got points on the league table. If the team lost but Bob got 100 kills , he was happy but the team still got sod all.

I don't like, I mean I really don't like at all, this multiplayer shit in games at the moment.

Can barely call team maps a team effort.

As for kill stealing, if it's a "team" effort then as long as it's a win at the end, who gives a fuck?

If it's not a team effort and it's based on individual kills then alls fair in love, war and getting the remote on a Saturday night.

Basically people have that fantastic double standard. It's okay for them to steal a kill but not for anyone to steal one from them.

Anybody that comes here claiming they have never done it is a liar. Everyone has stolen someone else's kill at some point whether it be by accident or just for the hell of it. It happens in shooters.

If you are playing by Warzone rules (aka most gametypes in GoW3), kill stealing is pretty much inevitable. All too often multiple people are shooting at the same guy until he is dead, so its impossible to know who got the down. The people who didn't get the down know they didn't get it, but at that point it could be anyone, especially when the game doesn't say who actually got it to everyone.

Under Execution rules, yeah, its a little less forgiving, but at the same time if you down him from half the map away with the sniper I'm not gonna wait for you to mosey on over and finish him off. Every second he stays down is a chance for his team to revive him or him to get up.

When your on a team, sometimes your kill will be stolen and sometimes you will steal a kill. It just about evens out...except that if your not worried about kill stealing, then there's less of a chance for a downed enemy to get back up. Also, either way, the team wins out. I say kill steal away unless your neglecting other duties to specifically steal kills. But that is just silly.

GOW is a team based game. If you don't like the fact that some people are trying to be a team player and make sure enemies stay dead, go play a different game.

Don't get me wrong, it is nice that you allow people to get the kills that they worked for, but sometimes things can get hectic around an area and killing every ************ you see is just the best solution.

I like to think I play GoW with some kind of common decency, for instance if a guy is clearly in control of the situation and is walking over ready to execute the poor fellow I'm not going to steal his kill (although it could perhaps be more humane to simply shoot the guy instead of letting him get his arms ripped off and subsequently be beaten to death with said arm, so I'm not kill stealing I'm just being kind, anyway fully drifted off topic now).

But the trouble is GoW is often very frantic and tense (for me atleast) and sometimes its often much better to just end the guy rather than risk him getting back up. So yeah it happens sometimes but it probably roughly evens out.

its better than letting them get up, especially since you never know when a team mate is gonna come around, shotgun you in the butthole and revive him.

Plus the assist bonus is based on total damage you did, so if someone does kill steal you, you get like 90% of the points anyways. You just dont get progress towards kill related challenges.

What if it's the last kill of the round and someone else does all the work and downs the guy? Don't they deserve the extra experience and thrill of the longer and slower to initiate executions?

But yeah if there are 2 people in the area I finish as quick as possible. If there is only 1 guy I let whoever put him down nab it.

As long as the team wins it shouldn't matter.

I haven't played GoW3 but I play competitively with friends on other games and we play for fun and as a team to win, it doesn't matter which individual gets the kill as long as the side works together.

This is why I always play with friends that understand this, getting moaned at when your just trying to guarantee your teams success is ridiculous. I'm glad it's not common in TF2, noone complains who got the kill on the heavy medic combo as long as they are dead.

There's no such thing as kill stealing in a team-based game -- especially not in one like Gears 3, which gives points for each point of damage, instead of just splitting it between kills and assists. You know what does annoy me? When I do about 90% of the damage to someone in TF2, and then they run away so that I don't hit them for a second or two, and as I'm chasing them, someone else on my team just barely hits them, killing them, and getting the full kill, instead of an assist. It's like "seriously? I did most of the work. Give me at least a little credit, here."

Edit: But I blame the game for having an imperfect assist mechanic, not the player for killing the other team. The only personal stat I care about is my win/loss ratio. Everything else is negotiable.

I don't know how different Gears of War is to other games, but when I'm playing a shooter, if I see an enemy I'll kill him, unless it's in my best interest not to. That's what enemies are for. I'm assuming GoW isn't set in some arse-backwards alternate universe where teams aren't meant to work together.
When using weapons that don't 1 hit kill, if you do enough damage, your opponent goes "down but not out". They can't fight back, they can just crawl around until they bleed out (happens after a set amount of time depending on game mode), get killed while on the floor, or revived by a team mate.

Kill stealing in gears is when you down someone, and someone else takes the kill. Incredibly frustrating when EVERYONE does it. I frequently get 5-6 of my 9+ downs taken a match.

Worst part is when you and an opponent simultaneously down each other, then a team mate comes, steals your kill, then doesn't revive you. Great teamwork there bro.

In most games, I don't believe in kill stealing. Way I see it, if someone is fighting someone else, no matter how low their enemy is on health, a friend can come in and help kill them. That's fine.

In Gears of War, however, enemies can be put in a completely helpless state. When someone is down, killing him is essentially taking credit for someone else's work, and it's more than a little douchebaggish. To essentially let someone kill an enemy, then to finish the job yourself when said enemy is entirely helpless at the hand of your teammate is pretty awful. Also, no I don't, 'cause I'm not a jerk and I believe in playing with honor. One of the few on that particular game...
