unless I run across an asshole... no I don't. But that is a rare game. If I meet an honorable teammate who waits until I tell them to take it or until it would be acceptable (not gonna be able to finish him off in time) I will often go so far as to guard their kill from the other assholes on my team until he can collect on his/her work. I might even (and often do) down said kill again if they start to get back up before my teammate arrives and then tell said teammate to take "their" kill.

I generally don't. But, the thing about GoW3 is they can get back up much sooner than in previous Gears without getting a revive. If the person who downed them perhaps is too far away or has a bad angle I might take it especially if I see another enemy running in to revive. I get a lot of kills stolen from me, but I try not to let it tick me off too much.

Some people however I feel take it way too damn seriously. Back in the Gears of War 1 era I played a lot with a now ex-friend. He downed two people and was trying to get the achievement for 100 torque bow kills. So, after downing them instead of killing them he switched to his torque to try to milk the kills that way as opposed to actually hitting a moving target. I didn't know he was doing this at this point. So, since it was taking him so long, they were on the verge of getting revived, I went ahead and killed them.

Next thing I know the guy that was rushing in to revive downed me. Then my "friend" came up to my downed self and in childish anger (the guy is over 20) kept meleeing me. Soon I was blocked from him on AIM, removed from his friends list, and he didn't talk to me for 6 months.

If it bleeds I can kill it If it moves and not on my team, I'm killing it. As mentioned above, 1. It's a team game, you want to survive so help each other out. 2. Even if you killed it, or someone "stole" your kill, the one who did the most damage too him get the most points and experience points.

The only time i've played a shooter with any form of seriousness was during the league games of Unreal Tournament.

Then we played as a team not for individual kills. As long as the team won then the team got points on the league table. If the team lost but Bob got 100 kills , he was happy but the team still got sod all.

I don't like, I mean I really don't like at all, this multiplayer shit in games at the moment.

Can barely call team maps a team effort.

As for kill stealing, if it's a "team" effort then as long as it's a win at the end, who gives a fuck?
It's a bit different in Gears of War. You'll down an enemy, often without any assistance from your team-mates, and run over to curb-stomp them, only to have some asshole shoot them out from under you.

I don't recall how the scoring system works, since I only played GoW2 multiplayer and this was quite some time ago, but whether scoring is based on damage or kills, it's very rude and very annoying. Like someone grabbing your cookie out of your hands right before you bite down on it.

the reason it annoys me is because to get the weapon challenges you actually have to kill them, not just down them and let someone else get it, and since most people will average around 10 kills a game it takes ages to get the challenges, and when half of your kills get stolen it takes even longer.
Pro tip; If you need the badges so much, play on Private Versus against Casuals. YOU set the weapon rules, YOU set the spawn rates, YOU decide how much you wish to excel at whatever. It's how I've gotten my first three mutators so fast.

In Standard Versus... It's a whole other story.

On the topic at hand however, I often take my time to be curtious and allow people near the vicinity to claim their righteous executions whenever possible, but sometimes it is an impossibility, at best.

I prefer to let whoever did most of the work to get the kill - but if things are hectic or I worked just as hard as a team mate to down a player but never got the 'down' message, I'll take the kill.

The bots seem to be notorious for taking my kills though. Damn you AIs!

Gears is a very chaotic game, and most of the time, I'm only kill-stealing by accident. Besides, I don't care about my killstreaks or whatever (I don't really play online a lot), I care about my team winning, so there.

Shortly after launch they changed black ops so the person that "downs" a guy gets the kill, and the person that finishes him gets an assist. I think that system has some merit.

Griping about Kill Stealing means you should not be playing multiplayer in the first place. combining fire on a single target kills it faster and thus makes it more likely for your team to win

If the guy has clearly just downed him and is going for the kill, or getting closer for the execution, then I don't. It's rude. If the player that got the kill has gone down or even died before finishing it off then I am making sure that locust bastard/COG prick is not getting back up.

Personally I dont intentionally steal kills (well maybe sometimes to piss my friends off). I have done so though a few times where more than one person where firing at the target, I thought I got the down and took the kill only to check my score after to find that someone else must have done. I don't partiality mind when other people steal my kills as a lot of the time I cant claim them myself without putting myself at risk however it dose annoy me when I down some one who isn't too far away and am blatantly going to over to claim my kill only to have it stolen right in front of me.

If I didn't down the person, I give the person that did a chance to go for the kill, but if another enemy is going to revive the downed one, it shouldn't matter.

This isn't about concentrating fire, this is about someone who intentionally takes someone elses kill. Working together is essential, yes, but if someone who just walks up and shoots your down after there is no possibility it was an accident, it sucks. There's no reason to, it's common courtesy to let whoever downed the enemy get the kill. It should always work that way.

In other games there usually isn't a Down But Not Out state (or it rewards the downer the kill) so people who didn't play the other Gears might not understand. For the most part in Gears 1 and 2, people didn't take kills (at least in my experience).

So now, when the third is ridiculously popular, all the fools from other 'team based' games come in and constantly steal kills. From what I've seen, it's mostly the 12-19 year-olds who play CoD nearly exclusively. And yes, the kills matter. If it was a competition or league where all that matters is the win, then I'd understand. But this is casual fragging, where whether you win or lose isn't so much an issue as much as having fun. It's not fun, however, when every time you earn a down, the effort gets stolen away by someone too dishonorable to allow you your kill.

I thought it was a single player game? Damn minotaurs...

anyways kill stealing ahs happened since the beginning of time, Im amazed by the fact that it still bothers you enough to create a topic on it it he forums.

In FPSs I shoot at everything that moves
Yeah, in MOST games killstealing isn't much of an issue.

In Gears 3, however, it is. It's annoying and some players are completely flagrant about it. Basic etiquette: if some guy has just fought one-on-one with an enemy and has downed him, and is then running toward the enemy to get an execution, then only a moron or a douchebag would feel the need to pump a couple of long-range shots into the enemy to finish him off. That's not to say two or three players should never be pouring fire into the same enemy - far from it in fact, enemies like the Marauder and Bezerker are very tricky to take down on your own, and of course the boss enemies all need concerted fire.

But against human-sized enemies, especially when it's clear the human player has the situation under control and especially when the enemy is down - leave well enough alone. Kill-stealing doesn't just hog points, it also prevents people getting achievements and fulfilling Horde challenges.

Tl;dr: Gears 3 kill-stealers are cheap b*stards.

I try to avoid this kind of behavior if it's possible. But I'm not going to let a downed enemy crawl away and risk a revival though. I'm not the kill-stealing sort, but at the end of the day it is a team game and if the team is winning, you are winning. Personal challenges are secondary to the good of the unit.

A quick rule of thumb:

If you're team member isn't getting the job done, it's fine to take matters into your own hands. You're team-focused.

If you desperately trying to shoot down the opponent before your team member can finish his Chainsaw kill, you're a douche.

Yes, finish the kill and move on. The other guy normally gets the assist anyway and it's the match bonus that's worth all the points. People need to start focusing on the big picture, victory is worth more than the sum of your kills.
