How important are graphics in a game? For me, they're somewhere in between. I don't think graphics should be touted as a game's biggest feature, because I don't see how a beautiful vista can make a game fun just because it's beautiful. On the other hand, I think graphics are a good portion of a game's overall quality, and great graphics should be commended, but not a flagship feature in a game.

Very, its that simple. It can make or break a game. Story is more important though if you ask me

I agree with you. Graphics should not make or break a game.
And though I'm quite sure this thread has been done before, I commend you for the quality of the repeat.

I play games usually for the story and characters. Graphics don't really mean that much to me if the story and characters are good. For instance, Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6 are some of my two favorite games ever, but they still use ancient 16 bit graphics.

Graphics are a good extra in my opinion, as long as the gameplay is fun I don't really mind the graphics being slightly primitive.

I find that poor graphics are only excusable in the case where the other aspects of the game more than make up for it i.e. the gameplay is really good or the storyline is gripping. I don't think that a game with bad graphics should be written off but with today's technology it doesn't take a lot to put some half decent graphics in.

Mildly significant. They should always, and I mean always come after the story and gameplay (obviously unless it's a simulator sports game, then gameplay comes first, then graphics for the immersion factor).

I've been hearing people say that Fallout 3 doesn't look that good, but is amazing, and that Oblivion isn't as good as Morrowind, and that just says it all to me.

For me it's less about graphics per say and more about the general art style. I can look past unpleasing graphics if the game is fun or has a story I can enjoy. I focus more of the general art direction of a game when judging it's graphics as for me art direction > pimped out graphics.

Pretty much what OP said: Neat-o and sometimes even commendable, but should never be the games prime feature.
Let's just say that it's important that the graphics are so good that you at least understand what it is you're looking at.

I know this thread has been done before, but thank you. I actually couldn't find a recent one on this topic, but I know I've seen it before.

I can't say I blame you for that; when you try to necro a thread, everyone comments on how old it is, rather than focusing on your opinion.

Not too important as classics like half-life and even chrono trigger are still bloody awesome games today no matter what. If a game's most prominent feature is graphics then that says something about the story, and the characters and immersion. Simply put, graphics alone will not make it a good game.

Up to date graphics are important to current games, but older games shouldn't be bashed for having sub par graphics if their gameplay is still fun.

Graphics are an important thing for me when I buy a game but they are not the most important thing. That for me is interest.

I think graphics are mildly significant in that they should be consistent and that when for instance my sword hits another character (visually) it should also actually hit (mechanically). I hate it when hitboxes aren't accurate. Games like Fallout, Arcanum and Eschalon aren't the most visual pleasing but that doesn't stop them from being ground-breakingly awesome games.

Completely unimportant, and it saddens me that no one else voted this way.

Graphics are the cherry, its something thats nice, but completely unneeded.

I still have more fun with Septerra Core then any of the prettier JRPGS.

I still have more fun with Planescape: Torment then I did Knights of the Old Republic (And I loved that game!)

I still have more fun with Sanitarium then I did Psychonauts

And Unreal will always be better then Halo.

So graphics aren't needed at all?

So, you're saying all games should be text-based?

Graphics represent a man sent to the electric chair, and Nintendo's fans/lovers are the ones who pull the switch.

Graphics can also be a hooker to the other consoles.
