I recently red an article that said that "gameplay is to a game as French fries are to a burger: simply an appetizer to the main course that is graphics" personally I think this is bull crap, look at the old 8-bit games we still play them even though there look terrible.

Where did you read that? That's the stupidest claim I think I've ever heard. If you can't PLAY a beautiful game, it isn't a game - it's an art exhibit.

Gameplay every time. When a game looks nice, that's great, but it wears off after the first few hours. With excellent gameplay, you get a whole lot more enjoyment out of the game.

I believe that your article is pointing out an obsession over having the best graphics at the expense of gameplay innovations. For example, Killzone 2, damn gorgeous game but what else does it have? I don't know, it's not been highly publicized.

While gameplay is more important, graphics can also be important

I'd like to add that when I say "graphics," I don't mean it like it's usually used. It's not just about technical sophistication, it's about how everything on the screen fits together. It's not about what you have, it's how you use it. As such, I'd say many classic 2D games are graphically superior to modern titles. It doesn't matter how many polygons you have onscreen if the only colors you use are gunmetal gray and dogshit brown.

Gaming has many different parts that make it good, Gameplay, Story, Music, Graphics, Replay-value among others, and out of the ones i listed, Graphics is the least important.

I know I personally enjoy plenty of older games (and perhaps it's just an overlarge dose of nostalgia) with graphics that are, by today's standards, horrific. However, I enjoy playing them (hence, the gameplay of them) enough to overlook that.

There was a thread about this a few days ago, I feel bad for the poor neglected search button.

This poll is inherently flawed. "I'm in the gaming discussion on "The Escapist," but I don't play games."

Gameplay, obviously, but graphics certainly help to portray the world the designers wish you to see, etc, etc...

Gameplay. You can have a game like Crysis, graphics-wise, as playable as, say, The Path of Neo. Gameplay wins every time. Then story.

Gameplay.

Then story. Graphics are the poor cousin on my list but sadly developers think of them as the rich neighbour.

Seriously, graphics are just icing on the cake. When it first came out no one said 'Yea, that Super Mario Brothers game is really fun, but it just isn't pretty enough.... it completely ruins the game for me'.
