I knew that the Green Lantern wasn't doing well but I never imagined that it was doing this badly. The movie with advertising has a 400 million dollar budget AND [HEADING=2]30 DAYS [/HEADING] Into it's run in the theater it has only made 144 million dollars. How do you guys feel about how big of a flop this is. Are you surprised? Why do you think this is?

EDIT: After doing the math and reading a list of the biggest flops before it. Green Lantern is BY FAR [HEADING=3]THE BIGGEST BOMB OF ALL TIME.[/HEADING]

I didn't think the movie was going to be any good, but I least thought people would go and see it.

Before the reviews came out, I would have been surprised. After the reviews, I'm actually kind of glad. For once, the people were actually able to hear about how shitty a movie was and say "Nope, I'm not going to see it."

Sadly, that probably has a lot to do with it being a movie about a comic book character. A lot of people probably didn't need much more of an excuse to not see it than that. Hopefully its lack of success doesn't adversely effect other "geek" related movies.

Now I'm excited to see how long it takes them to cancel those premature sequel plans they made a few weeks ago.

Yeah I didn't get my hopes up for Green Lantern, though he is my favourite superhero. Yeah its around the level of shittyness of rise of the sliver surfer and yes Fantastic 4 is generally pretty rubbish, in my opinion. I don't know why people got there hopes up, all the trailers look like shit.
The new Spider-man looks not exactly 'amazing', though I'm hopeful.

The movie's got some pretty negative word of mouth on it. And sometimes that makes all the difference. I know it did for me.

I will take Movie Bob's opinion over any other review site.

I didn't think it looked all that special any way.

I'll tell you what I would pay 8 dollars to see. A Deadpool movie. Oh yeah.

They used the wrong Green Lantern. Thats what I believe the problem to be. But not every movie can be successful. It helps Hollywood understand that you can't just use a good idea and toss it out. It doesn't always work. They haven't made a real original movie in forever.

It's a relatively unpopular superhero with a lame name. It's not exactly a draw to the many people who don't already have an interest in him. I didn't see it, but then again I've only been to the theater once in the past year (True Grit).

The new Spider-man trailer is for a movie that still won't be released for about a year though, so they can clean a lot of the special effects stuff up, do some re-shoots if they need to, generally make it better.

I am so far beyond pissed I don't even care anymore. I am a huge GL fan and refuse to even acknowledge the existence of this terrible movie.

Biggest Flop my ass. You obviously forgot about Waterworld.
First of all i didn't say biggest, I said "one of". 2 Waterworld did significantly better then Green Lantern. Waterworld made 260 million with a 175 and that with advertising and stuff it is probably 350 million. So yeah Green Lantern "wins" as the biggest failure

Am I surprised? Not in the slightest.

This is entirely because when I saw that the trailer showed the entire plot of the film to me. It was at that moment that I knew that the people handling the film fucked up royally.

I was expecting the movie to be mediocre, and I thought that WB would at least make some money off of it, but I never imagined it would do this terribly.

Oh... I know the answer to this one. What's the name of the actor that played the Green Latern?

Yeah, Him. Or the writers that gave him those lines.

Seriously... just from the trailers alone, I saw this guy's deliver of the hero and was so pissed.

Yeah, the GL likes to throw some witty lines here and there, but he's far from the comic givings such as Spidey.

I just think he shoul have been more serious. GL was more serious compared to others heroes.

The key problem here were that it is was made poorly, and that poor quality showed through in the trailers. Bad CGI is exponentially worse that bad puppetry or props and this movie had it in spades. This is a lesson that I don't think Hollywood is likely to learn anytime soon. You can edit the script, redub lines, rearrange scenes and such in post, but once you've committed tens of millions to graphics, you're pretty much stuck with putting them out no matter what they look like.

This is a movie I'm actually pleased that it failed. It's nothing against Green Lantern, but I hate seeing shoddy work be rewarded and it's heartening for it not to be for once.

I bet anyone here can name at least ten comics-based movies that were received well. Heck, just within the last few months, Thor and First Class came out and did just fine, and I don't doubt Captain America will as well. It's not the comic book connection that did Green Lantern in. Fortunately.

A big flop? Yes.
A surprise? No.
Ryan Reynolds, though it was so floppy that it's hard to blame only him.
