In the good old days of Mario Kart 64, there were three kinds of shell. The Red, in packs of one or three. These were for the new to shelling, homed in on your nearest competitor and bounced them vertically into the air. Then we had the green variety, for the discerning, experienced sheller. Green shells also came in packs of three, didn't home in and could be fired backwards, green shells also transferred their direction of movement, often involuntarily on the part of the receiever. Or in non-pretentious land, they often knocked you off the track.

Oh and there was also a purple, spiky shell which always hit the person coming first. And often went through everyone else first. And could be used as a shield which blocked everything. Quite handy.

But honestly, Green is for the win! Nothing better than demonstrating in the most caveman-like fashion that yes, you were the most skillful player in the room. Multiple times.

Isnt the Purpole ones Blue? i swear to god they are...

Red is the best... for obvious reasons(Hint, look at my name), but nothing beats getting hit by your own green shell...

um... yeah green was fun and all but the person shared a screen with you and knew you were going to fire it and could work something out. I dont remember correctly, probably, but red could be fired from the side and seemed to do an instant hit.

Or your own blue...

OT: I prefer the banana peels.

When I saw the title, I immediately thought of shotgun shells...

OT: Red. Who doesn't like shooting on easy mode?

Sorry man, but there's nothing better than firing a red shell and seeing it make a 90 degree turn into the guy before you.

I suppose Red would be more useful in races, as it essentially stops someone moving. I remember knocking someone over the finish line with a green shell once >.>'

But in Battle mode, you could often hit someone with a green shell, and if they took long enough t fall off the Skyscraper map, they'd end up losing TWO balloons! :D

hahaha oh what a wonderful thread
but yeah Mario Kart 64 was THE game that got me into gaming for real I think
like there was the SNES before that but MK64 was the one where I was like "grrr I keep getting 4th place, I must get gold!" and yeah

I assume the usage of shells here is more for Battle Mode? =}
yeah red shells were pretty insane, but there was a lot of satisfaction nailing someone with a no-lock-on green shell (minus the times when you spam them so that they make the lower levels of a map a death trap haha)

Y'know, I can see what you like about the green ones. Nothing shows more skill than knocking someone off with something that actually needs to be aimed. But as I remember back to my karting days, I was always so much happier with the red shells :D

Green shells were great when keeping others at bay behind you. At least, I was good enough to keep everyone off my back for the entirety of the race.

Quite. No aiming required, just fire and forget. Also the fact that I'm a crappy mario kart player, so red shells are like the handy dandy stop-an-opponent-for-sure item.

Fear the Blue Shell. It comes for you on swift wings, bearing your doom.
You hear the whoosh and instantly think, "Oh shit!"
I learned quickly that [Nothing escapes the Purple-Spiky/Blue Shell!]

I do not agree with your claims. The banana peel is the superior item for the following reasons:

They came in packs of TEN in Mario kart 64.
They could be thrown forward at varying strengths.
They cause a player to spin out, this is better than a shellcrash for a variety of reasons:
----- They can be placed on narrow paths to be unavoidable
----- When thrown, if they land on a player or in front of them, this is the most skillful thing you could do in mario kart.
----- They block shells from hitting you if you hold them behind you.
----- People swerve to avoid shells, but people swerve INTO banana peels.
----- Your character makes a small cheer when someone slips on your banana peel, this is a great morale booster when you're behind in the race.

Pressing when travelling at a low enough speed will cause your character to sing, and drive straight over it :D. Although if you could hit someone with a thrown banana peel, you were given the Kart Krown in my circle of friends.

And yes, in my circle of friends, I was "that guy" who always ran into the fakes. Sometimes my own. ><'

I only get hit by fake item blocks because I don't have time to react, or the path is too narrow.

I always put the fake item blocks INSIDE the real ones so they're impossible to see haha.
