Whether he's real or not? I don't know. Depends on what you believe. Most religions have an Angel of Death, most of which are drawn upon to some extent to create the modern idea of the Grim Reaper. Is he a bad guy? No, he's just doing an unpleasant but necessary job. Gotta respect him for that. Besides, he uses a Scythe, which is fucking awesome for a weapon.

Death as a sentient entity is a concept that has existed in many societies since the beginning of history. In English, death is often given the name the "Grim Reaper" and from the 15th century onwards came to be shown as a skeletal figure carrying a large scythe and clothed in a black cloak with a hood.
