I believe the only game I've played where that happened was in Call Of Juarez: Bound in Blood, when

You're captured by the general guy and tied up in a room.

Fortunately, the only enemy you face is a guard, who you proceed to beat over the head with a chair. Your weapons are right outside.

Using Alan Wake as an example as it is what you have referenced.

I found that game to be borederline tediously easy even on my second playthrough on nightmare mode.

It really is not an over statement to say the only challenging bits were the bits where the game removed weapons or the flash light from me, more over, from memory the instances where you lose your weapons fit the story (excluding of course the episode interludes).

The only time I would agree that it doesn't add anything to the game is when they take them away arbitrarily without reason and without any playable challenges with no weapons. For instance between each episode in Alan Wake.
well ok i'll admit that. yes its an easy game. but the point is that i think that developers need to find another way to mix it up. period.

If you mean the "captured" moments, "prison break" missions, so so. It depends on the game, but if they can pull it off well within the storyline, not do it too many times (two times is pushing it tbh, unless the game is huge) and obviously, you have other things to do than shoot things, it can be fun.

The best removal of guns ever for me was at the end of Resistance 2 because the game then replaced my guns with Insta-Kill hand blast powers, I felt it was a fair trade.

One time this happen it was guns but level.

In disgaea 2 you get etna on your team and you think yay I get a level 1000 on my team!! then you find out that in summoning her she loses all her levels and is level 1. by this time in the game you about level 35 so It's a long few hours of leveling her up. pain...

But taking equipment is ok if the game only does it 1 or 2 times and if the is a good reason for it e.g. you get captured and put in jail. But it's nice to get them back soon after.

All the games I've played where they do it, I like it it adds a change of pace. Although when it happened in Prototype I was a bit pissed.

the game drops so much ammo that if they didn't keep taking your weapons away it would destroy the the horror action of the game
So make ammo more rare.
Taking away your stuff is just a lazy and annoying way around that.

If the game requires that you have big guns for BBEs (big bad evils) and you horde them to try not and waste them on the faceless minions only to have your BBGs (big bad guns) taken away, yeah, it's kind of a kick in the pants.

One time I reloaded from a save point, used all my rockets on the riff-raff, only to have the (now empty) rocket launcher returned to me just in time to be eaten by a BBE.

If it happens once and for a short segment for narrative purposes, I have no huge problem with it. Keep doing it, though, and I'll get mad.

Happened to me when bandits took my fully upgraded AK in Stalker clear sky.
You can kill them and get it back if you want, but the gun was so good, the bandit had actually picked it up from the box, and used it himself. Unscripted AI FTL there..
And the thing would kill me in 1-3 hits, plus he had a scope.
All while I am left with no money, and a pistol.
Are you talking about the mugging that occurs in the Garbage?

I had an upgraded Obakan with a scope and some other nice goodies tacked on.

That portion of the game was frustrating - until I learned a secret.

Just drop all of your gear on the ground behind the building before entering. The bandits go through your inventory when they loot you, and if you don't have anything on you, they will get nothing, and for some reason, they simply step over all of your gear on the ground when they exit the building; leaving you to pick it all back up and seek vengeance!

The part in Bioshock 1 where it took all my guns before a boss fight, that was frickin' annoying.

It does seem like a slightly uncreative way to mess with the player's sense of safety, but there are times and ways that it can be done where it fits the story particularly well or opens up possibilities to the player.

Examples being the fight against Peachy in Bioshock, where you were stripped of your weapons and had to fight with only plasmids. (If you didn't know what worked where and how, you did after that fight) Or in GoW when you fought your first Berserker. You didn't actually lose your weapons but they were completely useless. But in Bioshock you got your weapons back after the fight and in GoW you just Hammer'd the thing into the ground.

But generally speaking, yeah, it makes me rage a bit.
I can't remember the bioshock fight your talking about but I pretty much went through that entire game using my shootas (yeah, I went all orky on yo ass! Haha), I just forgot about them and was only reminded when I needed to melt ice or something.

On topic. The only example I can think of is, the already mentioned, prototype but that kind of works the other way round and removes your powers forcing you to use your guns.
