I vastly preferred Saint's Row 2 which I completed, over Grand Theft Auto IV which I did not.

The range of activities and the whole character customization system in SR 2 really made the game for me. Not to mention the fact that this game proved that you could voice a protaganist and still have character customization by having multiple voice actors read the script and then being able to choose which voice you wanted to play for your character through the game.

Simply put, Saint's Row 2 was a lot more fun.

I prefer GTAIV.

Why?

I like to recreate car chases from the show 'Cops' and the games physics deliver.

Saints Row 2 couldn't hold my attention.
It constantly tried to shove something new in my face that would supposedly entertain me.
It has minigames, great! Most of them are just poorly made distractions from the actual game.
I never finished the campaign... Could never take it serously. Sure, it's a crazy and funny game, but I never really wanted to do anything because there was never a sense of urgency...
The graphics are very low-tech, and the arcade style vehicle handling got very old very fast...
I still like it. I mean, I play it every once in awhile...
Anyway...
On to GTA. Back in the days of San Andreas, there were people who complained that it wasn't realistic enough, since each progressive 3D GTA game got more and more realistic.
Yes, a large group of people were perfectly content with San Andreas, but those who said it was too arcadey got what they wanted. A fully realistic GTA. So, what do they go and do? They complain again that it's too realistic! Yeah well fuck you! There can't be a balance between ultra-realism and easy gameplay. It's either one or the other! Cars handle like shit? Get in a real car and try to drive the way you do in Saints Row... Go ahead and tell me what happens, I'll be right here waiting. I guess a large part of both games playerbases have never driven a car before...
Anyway, the driving mechanics in GTA are good in my opinion. Not perfect, but not shit. No game can nail a perfect driving experience, just get the fuck over it. I struggled at first to get my car from point A to point B, but instead of getting on the internet and bitching about it I got used to the whole thing. I can get my car from point A to point B, and then to point C, and then some! Helicopters are hard to fly? Well yeah! They're helicopters! You have roughly five buttons controlling ten different actions! What, do you think actual helicopters have a simple five button layout? No! They're difficult to fly both in real life and in the game for a reason! And again, they're easy to get used to if you don't give up and cry about it.
Er, now...
The story. It's...Well, a story! It's very engaging, it's got a sense of urgency, even though you can select to do a mission at any time, and it's good. The graphics speak for themselves... The characters may be all giant assholes, but lets see you go and live in New York under difficult circumstances without changing...
Er, other gripes... Saints Row is a GTA rip-off? Well while GTA did set the standard for sandbox games way back when, I don't agree that games similar to it are trying to copy it. Saints Row looks nothing like GTA. In fact, why the hell do people keep comparing them? They're both in completly different catagories!!!
It's like when everyone was arguing over Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3! They're completly different games! You can safely say that both are good, because each of them have pros and cons that seem to be opposites of the other.
I mean, fuck. Halo is fucking Sci-fi... Idiots...
I'm cutting off here, because I'm guessing someone is going to snip my post into organized arguments against me.
So fuck you ahead of time, because these are nothing but opinions!
I think I've made my quota for enemies today.

I liked GTAIV more because I enjoyed Niko's exploits in Liberty City. (Yeah, I was the guy who actually went bowling with Roman. I liked Roman. He gave me free cab rides.)

But for all purposes, play Saints Row. It's more fun because it doesn't take itself seriously. I didn't like it better, but that's because I'm unusual.

Sorry, but GTA lost any sense of realism the moment you could murder 15 people in broad daylight and get away with by hiding under a bridge for 10 minutes. I understood that GTA IV was trying to tell a story but the canon is really broken. It's hard to feel bad for Niko Bellic when all he does outside of the missions is kill pigeons, get drunk and cause riots.

At least Saints Row 2's story fit in quite well with the mayhem you'd cause outside of the storyline. You're a fucking gangster. You enter other gangsters territories and shit happens. You change cars and clothes so much that it's hard for the police to get tabs on you. Saints Row 2 lets you have your cake and eat it too.

GTA IV lets you eat your cake but makes you feel guilty afterward.

I loved GTA4, but I've never played SR1 or 2. Luckily, I've heard lots of good things about both, and apparently they're both coming out in a $30 collection next month, so I will probably bite and enjoy some less realistic physics and just play what others have said GTA4 should have been more like. Hell, it will be nice just to play withou-

Well I have never played Saints Row 2 but I have played Saints Row 1, and really... seeing as Saints Row 1 allowed you to customize your cars to the way you wanted... I'm going with Saints Row 2.

Honestly it's 50/50 for me. I like Saints Row's gameplay, characters, and plot(unless we're talking about Lost and Damned) more then GTA's, Yet aside from Hitman, I really don't like the Mini-games of SR2, and for sheer dicking around potential I prefer GTA.

saints row 2 would get my vote if they hadn't just rushed a port for a pc, it's unplayable on my rig, and my rig easily copes with gta4

Saint's Row 2, no contest.

I preferred it when Rockstar made sillier sandbox games.
My exact thoughts. When I played GTAIV I remember thinking "this used to be fun, and with decent music".
Then I tried Saints Row 2 and thought "Aaaaaaaaah, so THIS is where the fun went".

I loved them both but I prefer GTA 4. Don't get me wrong, I love the unrealism of Saints Row 2 but I just had more fun playing GTA 4.

I've never owned either but played GTA IV to death, staying up all night solo playing online once even, and playing singleplayer for hours upon hours at a friends place and even going so far to edit together a clip and post it on youtube. I've only played Saint's Row 2 for maybe 5 minutes at a party. Which is the better game?

Saints Row 2. By leaps and bounds.

For gameplay and fun, Saints Row 2, hands down. But Liberty City was gorgeous and a lot more immersive than the Saint's Row city (whose name escapes me, which is kinda telling, no?).

So to actually play the game, Saints Row 2. To dick around in a pretty environment? GTAIV

Saint's Row 2. It's not even a close race.

And now that Mafia 2 is out, there really no reason for anyone to play GTA4 at all. If you're looking for a character and story based "open world" crime game then go play Mafia 2. If you want a fun based open world crime game then go play Saint's Row 2.

Saints row 2 by far. It managed to make me laugh throughout the whole campaign

MC: Who's this guy?
Shaundi: My Ex. He's willing to help us.
MC: I thought i killed your Ex?
Shaundi: he's my other ex.

Saints Row 2. Saints Row 2 so so so so much. It was like the developers understood their audience they realised people actually wanted something fun to play. Unlike the GTA 4 lads that thought driving your FUCKING cousin to play FUCKING darts every five minutes was a clever game play mechanic. I'm still thoroughly annoyed at having spent money on that staggering hunk of boring.

Also. Pimpcane Shotgun.

Who the hell clicked GTA4?! SR2 by fair is the better game.

Also, SR2 hosts some of the greatest character personalitys ever.

Benjamin King: She tells everything to her fashion consultant, he shouldn't be too hard to break.
Johnny Gat: Who is this guy?
Benjamin King: Some Eurotrash ************ named Stefan.
Johnny Gat: I hate him already.
That was actually from Saints Row, not Saints Row 2. :p

But yeah, SR2 > GTA IV. GTA IV is alright for what it was trying to be, but SR2 is just way more fun. I think the trailer speaks for itself:

I've played and enjoyed both of them, but I found myself playing more of GTA IV.

The driving in GTA IV really annoyed me, but I loved that they used the Euphoria engine.
Pushing someone down some stairs will always make me laugh.
