I'm saving up for GTA V PC and I just wanted to get a second opinion.
Should I:

1. Preorder from Steam®
2. Preorder on-disc from GameStop®
3. Buy on release day from Steam®
4. Buy on release day from GameStop®

I suggest "preordering" it from Steam at the last possible moment (which could even be a few hours before release). This way you can actually watch/read some reviews to see if the PC version is in a playable state before buying the game and get all the preorder bonuses.

^This.

As a rule you should never buy anything from Gamestop. Their general business practices can be summed up as "Come here customer. I need something to bend over a counter and fuck." Most recent example: Attempts to jump in bed with publishers to secure exclusive gameplay for their pre-orders. Cos there's nothing like holding content to ransom to build goodwill and improve the industry.

Neither honestly, GTA 4 port was terrible also I really feel like GTA V only got as much attention as it did due to its pedigree. Had it been released by someone other than rockstar with out the GTA label it would of not received the acclaim or sales it did. It just wasn't that impressive honestly. It ran like a turd on the last gen consoles and looks like one as well, the story was mediocre at best and the online features were far over hyped and unnecessary.

Maybe it will be better on Current gen and PC but honestly I doubt it the core game is just way to flawed.

I feel like this is a joke thread with all the uses of the registered trademark symbol.

If this thread isn't this I suggest you just wait for the next Steam Sale to see if they fuck up the port or do something stupid like add in a 'new' GFWL overlay like they did with GTA4.

Whichever gives you the best value, if you like that style of game GTA V is more than good enough to be worth a purchase. Its a good game, just don't expect the whole "eleven out of ten greatest game EVAR! the Jesus of all games!" hype that surrounded it at launch. The platform upgrade should sort out the graphical ugliness like the pixelated faces outside the cutscenes if the character was more than six in game feet away and the world item pop in (how many times thats killed me in a plane after a Cactus or something appeared from nowhere, FFFUUUUU! ), the gameplay is good and again if you like this style of game you should find no cause for complaint. Its all solid and one of the best examples of its kind, the world is also big and there is a lot of things to do. The story and characters are pretty subjective but its functional enough, the three main characters do have some pretty amusing interaction though.

But

Rockstar have a bad track record with PC ports, we all know how GTA 4 turned out and if its anywhere near as bad as that it would be frustrating indeed for a lot of people. Its a risk you will have to consider, there is a good chance it will be a better port this time around however. Unlike GTA 4 where they ported it from Power PC architecture to X86-64 just for the PC release they are making it for the current gen consoles as well so they shouldn't be as sloppy as they where last time, the current gen console and PC release isn't just a simple port either as they did a complete visual overhaul with all the additional effects, new textures and engine optimisations. I will probably wait myself. I already played the Eggbox 360 version so I'm not that eager and can wait for the reviews and/or fixes, I am excited about seeing what the modders can do to this game though.

Just wait it is what I'd do as I'm not into GTA, nor its type of game. Get it wherever gives you the best deal, don't let jobbers dissuade you from getting it at gamestop because they're unhappy big bad gamestop is laughing in their faces.
Remember its all about the money, not about whatever little complaint they have.

You're really going to bring that up in this kind of thread? People planning on perhaps shopping at gamestop don't care for your crusade mate.

Even if you read the "reviews" it's the general public that actually report the general problems with the game.
I vote option 5 also. A little delayed gratification is good for the soul.

andddddd Saints Row IV all the way

Option 5 and a bit.
There will always be lets plays and more patches, etc.

Does it really matter which version you buy though? doesn't both contain Steam DRM?

Option 6:
Wait for reviews to see if the porting is any good, see if there's any nasty DRM, and wait for a steam sale because I'm not paying full price for a game that's already a year old when they port it.

If you don't want to blow your cap in one go then go boxed I suppose.

But since you mentioned Gamestop, I guess you live in a country where thats not really an issue.

Why yes, I do live in Australia...

You'll probably end up paying more that way, depending which country you live in. Here in Australia, a lot of games on Steam get bumped up $10-$20 within a few weeks before release. The last game I remember that did that was Watch Dogs. It was $60 to preorder up until a fortnight before release, when it was changed to $75. That said, I preordered it from GMG for $48 and that included all of the extra stuff which cost $70 on Steam at the time ($85 after the price-rise.)

I could never recommend buying from GameStop. Those assholes are now planning to interfere with game development so they could get exclusive DLC deals. They would gladly pay the developers to cut the game into pieces to make you buy it from them because they can't adapt to the growing digital distribution market. I want them to go bankrupt. Go with Steam.

Game prices are notoriously bad in Australia. In Israel, we get the same prices as the US on Steam, which are far better than the prices we have in stores, so what I recommended pays off for me. The preorder price stays the same for me until the moment of release.

What does this have to do with the thread at hand? All companies exist to make money, don't be a mark and think some other company is somehow innocent. Valve has their support behind Early Access (and before you say it, someone else being "worse" doesn't excuse it no), why don't you want them to die like Gamestop?
What bunkum such a stance is.

If you have slow internet/data caps buy it physical.

If you have fast internet and no caps, then whichever is cheapest.

5 POINTS FOR GRIFFINDOR!

Yeah pretty much this. And I would personally buy it at whatever retail store has it, preferably not Gamestop but if you have to then so be it. I pretty much stay away from Steam if at all possible. They've been hurting my body too much lately.
