Regardless of your choice, your Take Two Interactive PC game is going to register on Steam. It boils down to whether or not you think the package is worth the trip to the store.

Wait for a Steam sale, let Rock Star know that pre-orders and release day purchases happen when the game releases at the same time as all platforms not a year later. Also best to find out if Rock Star will blow it, since they are not so good with ports to PC, they will likely have some trouble with the "next gen" consoles as well.

If you are living in the past and simply need a physical copy, go to Amazon or something, as PC gamers we should be helping the Game Stops of the world shut down, not take a cut. You should only be buying Steam cards from Game Stop, they make 0 money off them and they make franchise owners sweat with fear and managers cry. Its really quite fun, also reject all their offers bonuses and to sign up for their ridiculous points cards, just ads to looks of anguish and fear.

Why would you wish ill on franchise owners? I'm thinking you're taking your zealotry too far.

Why are Steam and Gamestop your only options? What about Amazon? I'm not from the US so I don't know what other retailers or e-tailers you have there.

Other option, preorder from Amazon. That way if the games a royally fucked up port you can actually get your money back, whereas if its a royally fucked up port Valve will just point and laugh at you while they swim in their pools of money.

Neither honestly, GTA 4 port was terrible also I really feel like GTA V only got as much attention as it did due to its pedigree. Had it been released by someone other than rockstar with out the GTA label it would of not received the acclaim or sales it did. It just wasn't that impressive honestly. It ran like a turd on the last gen consoles and looks like one as well, the story was mediocre at best and the online features were far over hyped and unnecessary.
LOL look everyone I don't like GTA5 aren't I hip by not being part of the crowd, really the huge amount of miss info in the post really only shows that you are standing against GTA5 not because of any real reason but because, well it's cool not to be part of a crowd.

GTA4 did indeed get a poor port, but it also got follow up patches that vastly improved the game and even today looks stunning and runs very very smoothly, at least on my system.

Had it been released by anyone else it would not have sold well, what about Watchdogs which in every way is the lesser game and not sold by Rockstar but still went on to sell huge numbers

It ran like a turd and looks like one, sorry have you been smearing shite on your screen prior to playing this game? GTA5 runs fine, it bogs down in one or two areas but given the size and scope and the hardware it is running on it can be forgiven and it looks better in very many areas than next gen Watchdogs does.

The story was mediocre, compared to what? The story was vastly more engaging than any of the other big name triple AAAs released of late.

Online, overhyped and unnecessary? Apart from the hiests still not being here Rockstar have delivered and have continued to deliver, so far not a sniff of a paid for DLC but plenty of free content as well as a dozen patches and they have even listened to the community and added asked for fixes and content as for unnecessary, in what context, in that it has expanded on a game that would have ended after a dozen or so hours and turned it in to a game that has hundreds of hours of content added for free by Rockstar as well as by the people who play it... in what way is it UNNECESSARY?

As for the original OP,

Get it on Steam, it will no doubt require it as pretty much every game does. The porting issues of GTA4 are less likely to be an issue as the game is getting cross ported in line with the next gen consoles which pretty share a hardware and software base with PC and the limitations of the PCs of GTA4s time (8 core software being ported to a market that then was dominated by dual core systems) are no longer as big an issue now.
