Guild Wars 2 is coming out this year and I'm wondering what your opinions are...
Do you believe it will be the next big thing that will crush all other MMOs into oblivion?

In my opinion, it looks fantastic and has amazing concepts and I hope it does well and gives me something other than WoW to enjoy.

I think it may be the game to bring me back into the MMO world. It looks that good. And I also have the april fools special Commando picture as my desktop because its so awesome.

At ^^ Commando used to be my desktop too. Now that the engineer was released...

OT: Looking forward to it, in the end it's a no-subscription model so if I don't like it I wasn't paying per month and investing in it. Then again, everything I've seen so far has me enthralled with the game so I doubt that will happen. It's won't crush the MMO market but will definitely take a sizable portion of it.

Yeah, that 40k one sounds pretty badass.

The Star Wars one looks kind of dated and clunky, not too sure about it...

Yeah, the "Clone Wars" *Shudders*.

I do believe, and I did love the series, however, Star Wars should be laid to rest, so to speak.

or at least not handled in such a crappy money making manner that the new movies were, really the best thing out of it was the starwars clone wars thing, not the 3d show but the mini series

So okay, it looks and sounds like it has some serious potential to be one bitchin' MMO, however, it sounds like it's goals are lofty.

The dynamic quest system doesn't sit well with me; I rather prefer at least a semi-defined path as I level. Give me a base line of quests to follow with side quests to pick and choose from. What GW2 sounds like it's going to do is dump you in the game and tell you good luck in hunting down quests. I will have to wait after it's released to hear from others how it works.

The lack of pre-defined roles. This is an interesting concept and one I would certainly hope they are able to pull off, however, I don't see how you can not have someone be a designated tank or healer. By the looks of it there will be the various armor types and weapons available to each class. Unless they have made it so every class can wear every armor type (with itemization for each class included with each armor type) and use every weapon you are still going to see people hunting for tanks and healers because. The tank, healer, and dps triangle is one that's existed since the days of table top gaming; for their to be no existence of that triangle in GW2 has me raising an eyebrow of "Orly?". The implementation and success of this gameplay mechanic will be something I keep my eye on after it's release.

Now to say some good things about it.

The art direction looks fantastic, this is what a fantasy MMO should look like these days. It's visiually interesting without making everything look gritty and dark. If I had to pick an example of what WoW should look like were it's graphics engine to ever get an overhaul it would be this.

The music sounds good; while I can only go off of what they've used in the various trailers it seems to be shaping up nicely. I would still like to see some zones paired with their respective music though so I can make a better judgement.

Combat sounds interesting and engaging and that dragon fight posted in the OP looks like it kicks some serious ass. As a veteran WoW player I can definitely say that my favorite boss fights were the ones that kept you on your toes to avoid boss attacks; good scripting helped as well. (The Ulduar boss fights were some of my favorites if you want examples)

PvP....I don't really like PvP; really only enjoyed the PvP in Warhammer as an engineer or sorceress; I'll weigh in on GW2's if I ever buy it.

No flying: Gotta say I'll miss that from WoW should I ever play it; but it's by no means a deal breaker. Provided I can still get to areas in a reasonable amount of time on foot or via a transportation system I will be happy.

That's about it for my first impressions of the game; it's currently vieing for my attention against SW:TOR MMO. It's hard choice to say which interests me more as I've always been more interested in the fantasy genre than Sci-fi, but TOR does have the Sith Inquisitor class and looks to be shaping up pretty well also. Who will get my money is a hard call, though it will probably be whoever puts out a free trial or demo first.

Fantastic point, Sir, and without flaw, I too have similiar concerns regarding the role system.

SW:TOR, to me, has a few problems.

1. The graphics are stylized and are quite clunky.

Heh, not a few, only one, but it's quite a large one.

I'm looking forward to GW2. I have played some of Guild Wars, but it wasn't so compelling for me. The cross-class system. at the least as done in GW1 wasn't so appealing to me. I like Nightfall better, but still had some of the flaws that pulled down the original imo. But GW2 does look promising to me.

I'm also thinking that no one on this forum is looking for a WoW killer that has been "sought" for in the MMO community, though WoW is certainly is passing its prime and starting to decline. But as mentioned by posters above me, GW2 should have themselves a hefty amount of players.

The Cross-Class system takes time to get used to, I personally agree, it's awkward.

I also don't like having the zones instanced, hopefully they lessen that or don't include it all.

Apart from that, I hope you keep an eye for it.

I'm pure ranger, I keep my line strong, *Wink*

Ranger and THIEF you say? Well... The line doesn't have to be THAT strong.

Everything I've heard and seen looks great so far. While it certainly looks great, looks can be decieving. They're promising an awful lot though... and I'm sure a lot of it won't work as well as they intend in the real game. I'm still psyched. I'll decide when it arrives.

That said, I voted, "Good if they get it RIGHT."

Well, this is pretty much what I was trying to say but put a lot better.

I've been following GW2 since it's annoucenment. I've played the original GW to death, and I recognize it's not going to be the same game, it's really going to be very different, I don't think playing the first one will give you a good idea about GW2.

To answer some questions, based on preliminary information released by ArenaNet (Devs), this is just pre release stuff, so is subject to change:

The only instanced zones in GW2 will be dungeons, and Singe Player content story areas. Cities and most areas will not be instanced. All Dynamic events will happen in instanced areas.

Complimentary to the dynamic event system is the personal storyline series of quests, which is just you, and mostly in instanced areas. There is also dungeons and whatnot.

I sometimes feel like it will end up like this, with one class not being assigned as a healer by the devs, but it's better at it then everyone else, so it gets to be the healer to the players. Also: Each class can only wear one type of armor, so take that as you will.

I hated swimming in WoW so much because it was so slow. That is not a plus.
Just about all classes have a way round it, though, and in the newest xpac you run very fast underwater in the underwater area (Though the place is optional, you can you for grassy hills to level instead)

Eh. It has the eternal MMORPG problem of the combat, characters and animation all looking like crap.

Environments look awesome though.
