I guess you're right but if you want to hear an awesome drum solo listen to Moby dick by Led Zeppelin, it blew me away when I first heard it! Btw your avatar is epic!
I'll look it up, and thanks!
My avatar is quite popular around the Escapist it seems.
If you get the live version off How the West Was Won, its 15 minutes long. I'll be honest, there a reason why drum solos don't usually last more than 2 minutes.
On the other hand, I would probably get bored listening to a 15 minute guitar solo.
Both are pretty important. There a good bands with bad drummers, or even no drummer at all, and good bands with bad guitarists, or no guitarist at all.
The guitar is good for melody, but there are tonnes of other instruments (read: all instruments that aren't drums) that can do melody as well. Also,
very talented acoustic guitarists can use it as a percussion instrument as well. Also, melody in a song can stand up by itself much better than just rhythm.
If you were to do an analysis of instruments not based on how it actually sounds, then the guitar would probably come out on top (possibly second to piano).
- Large range
- Can play rhythm or melody
- Can bend notes (and bend some notes while keeping other notes the same), mute strings, get feedback and other effects you can't acheive on other instruments
- Portable
- They can be quite cheap
