This. I enjoy playing both but guitar wins hands down.

I'd say guitars are better because of their ability to play melodies.

Drums can play melodies, but they need to be the size of Terry Bozzio's drum kit.
For all around diversity, guitar, for pure rhythmic quality (which a lot of musicians forget) I'd go with drums

This is just stupid. As someone with experience playing in a rock band I can safely say that you need both. Even though I am a drummer I didn't vote because music needs the mutiple instruments (including bass btw) to make a song.

Even though I'm a drummer, I gotta say guitar is probably more important than drum set, even though most music would be severely diminished without drums.

I've long maintained that the drums are the most important instrument in the band. You can't have a good band without a good drummer, but there are plenty of highly popular bands with shitty guitarists.

Then again, there are plenty of popular bands with fairly shit drummers who never stray far from the basic rock beat in their songs.

You're comparing apples to oranges. It's all in preference, I'm a fairly talented drummer so I said drums, but a guitarist will obviously say guitar. I sense a flame war in this thread's very near future.

I don't know, they're too vastly different. I play guitar, but having seen several drummers play live last weekend, I have acquired an inordinate respect for that instrument and its players.
I suppose the drums are more crucial, to keep a song together. Melody can be done with any number of instruments.

Better at what? Drums are certainly better from drumming, drumming with guitar is really painful task, actually pretty similar to pulling strings on drums.
It's really like asking which is better: fork or knife.
They both have their place in creating music, and both are so different that it is silly to try and compare them in any way.

If you get the live version off How the West Was Won, its 15 minutes long. I'll be honest, there a reason why drum solos don't usually last more than 2 minutes.
On the other hand, I would probably get bored listening to a 15 minute guitar solo.

Both are pretty important. There a good bands with bad drummers, or even no drummer at all, and good bands with bad guitarists, or no guitarist at all.

The guitar is good for melody, but there are tonnes of other instruments (read: all instruments that aren't drums) that can do melody as well. Also, very talented acoustic guitarists can use it as a percussion instrument as well. Also, melody in a song can stand up by itself much better than just rhythm.
If you were to do an analysis of instruments not based on how it actually sounds, then the guitar would probably come out on top (possibly second to piano).
- Large range
- Can play rhythm or melody
- Can bend notes (and bend some notes while keeping other notes the same), mute strings, get feedback and other effects you can't acheive on other instruments
- Portable
- They can be quite cheap
