A recent thread got me into an argument about gun rights. (It was the 'Police shoot dog' thread) And it got me thinking, what is the general belief here on the Escapist about guns?

Instead of typing a wall of text to say what I think, I suppose I could just post a link to my debate instead: (It addresses the general argument on why guns should be outlawed.)
And please, please, please! Read the link first, because if you don't you'll probably end up asking the same questions as they guy I was talking with in the first place.

Just keep it how it is in America. All guns are legal with the exception of Class III Destructive, Automatic, or Suppressed, which require a license.

EDIT: So don't totally ban anything.

I'm always a little against guns because I find them a somewhat lazy and inresponsible way for a non-soldier to fight.
I do however think that self-defence is an important right, so would be willing to accept them as a compromise if we can't go back to everyone carrying a sword :)

I take it this doesn't include Stingers and RPGs? What about TOW-2's?

Well, I think it should be (like it is now in America), you can buy explosive weapons with the Class III licence, just not ammunition for them.

EDIT: So yeah, you could essentially have a howitzer in your backyard, but no means of using it to destroy things.

You shouldn't be able to walk down the street and have a gun with you. I could accept a handgun or shotgun at home or a small collection at a gun range, but both guns and owners would need to have a complete licensing and screening process, while individuals with a firearm inventory over a certain threshold automatically get put on a special watch list. All this, and it is illegal to carry a loaded gun with you off your property or any other licensed area.

I believe they should be outright banned for citizens.

Honestly, when does a citizen need a firearm?

Only law enforcement and government officials who are typically required to carry them should be allowed to use them.

And before anyone tries to respond with scenarios of rising crime and black market operations to acquire firearms, well they woouldn't be able to do much without firearms, especially when the law enforcement tracking them down does.

EDIT: Ok seriously stop fucking quoting me. Can't anyone make a single anti-firearm post without several others trying to prove how wrong you are?

Ban all types of weapons for anything other than display purposes (e.g. Display swords on walls) but beyond that there is just no good reason for them to be legal for civilian use.

Its like free speech, you either get it all, or you ban it all. You shouldn't give free speech and just censor certain phrases, you shouldn't give gun freedom but just stop certain guns. I don't see how a 18yr soldier in a tank is any more mature than anyone with a certain amount of training.

I believe that if you are competent enough and have the maturity enough, then you should be able to buy a gun.

Well, states side the second amendment only exists so that the citizens could fight the government if it had gotten too powerful and began to dissolve any rights. Oh, and home defense and hunting help too. :)

Guns are shit and I have very little if any respect for anyone who uses one, with the possible exception of someone who lives in a part of the world that is densely populated by tigers and or dinosaurs.

So you're telling me that the lady that got raped and left for dead in an alley didn't need some sort of protection? That's what firearms give you, they give you a sense of protection and the means to defend yourself against others who will do harm to you. There's also the 2nd amendment right to rise up against any tyrannical form of government.

Please explain your reasoning.

i heard that the second amendment was only for the USA's ARMY to have the right to be armed not its citizens.

I own and carry firearms for the simple reason that the authorities cannot be where they need to be all the time, and the reality is that they are often only involved after said crime has occurred. I am more than willing to be responsible for my conduct and the protection of my person and property, so I trained how to fight and use a firearm.

No, the 2nd amendment is the right to bears arms for the citizens even if they are not part of the military or a militia.

Jeez, I hope we didn't have to make a special rule to allow our soldiers to carry, lol.
