Hmm, this morning on the way to work I hit a patch of black ice while doing about 60mph and for about 50 metres the car was completely out of my control, swerving left and right violently until I managed to get proper traction again. I did briefly think "There's a very high chance I might actually crash here!" but I was only worried about the damage that would be done to my new car, at no point did I actually think "I'm in danger here!"

Although I know there is a very high likelihood of me getting cancer or something like that, I don't really believe it will ever happen to me, I'm still happily in denial about the whole inevitable death thing.

I could live without hearing, though it'd be difficult. I love listening to music too much. I could live without legs, or at least partial loss. Prosthetics have made leaps and bounds, so mobility might not be too limited. I could even live without speaking. Would make social interactions better, since all I'd need to do is scribble "can't talk, stfu" on a note-pad.

But, losing my hands or eyesight scares the shit out of me. I rely too much on on being able to see, or being able to handle things that I'd probably consider suicide if I lost either of those.

Not afraid but I don't think about it. There's only so much you can do to prevent it anyway. Hell, I'm currently recovering from a broken wrist (two places) and a fractured collar bone from when I wrecked my Harley. I was wearing protective gear so the injuries were reduced. While it's not be a fun experience, I'm not going to become a shut in. That's no way to live life. Once both my wrist and bike are fixed, I'll be back it. Enjoying the open road and the wind in my face. Constantly worrying about injury or disease will just make you a neurotic hermit.

In many cases there's not much you can do about it...if life is going to fuck you, it's going to fuck you. You can exercise and eat well and try to mitigate your chances of disease, but if you lost the genetic lottery one will get you in the end anyway. And injuries/crashes/etc can happen at any time to anyone. Best you can do is try to minimize your own culpability to keep your risk down.

First time you DO get a serious disease or when someone you love dies suddenly or when you are the victim of a traumatic event is a life changing moment. It's the moment you become fully aware of your own mortality, and that terrible things do not only happen to other people. I'd say "it's the moment you become an adult" or something equally twee, but sometimes it's just "the moment you develop PTSD".

No , i smoke , i Want to die . The only reason i don't do it myself , is because if i do that , and my mom outlives me , she wins . And i have too much pride for her to stand on my grave telling me she told me so . So no , i'm actually hoping a freak accident claims my life . It would make things so much easier.

Done the cancer thing. To be honest, I didn't have much of a problem with it. The major pain in the arse came from five years worth of check-ups at the hospital. I hate hospitals, they're full of sick people....like cancer patients!

Apart from that, I've been under the wheels of a moving bus and had a few blue-light and sirens incidents. I just don't get what the fuss is about. Pain hurts, you deal with it. Death often hurts more, but.....

What more can you do? It's silly to constantly worry about things, or wrap yourself in cotton wool.

The cancer thing doesn't scare me too much (smoker here). Death, while it frightens me can't be all that bad.

What I'm really afraid of is dying in an awful way like getting into a brutal car crash or getting shot/stabbed to death.

Nah. I don't much care. I *am* afraid people will refuse to euthanise me and I will be too weak to do so myself. That is what terrifies me. But then I console myself thinking that I know my way around a hospital, and all I will need is meticulous planning and my awful, awful stealth.

im not worried about cancer and the likes..(though id hate it) but meh..i smoke and drink and if the opportunity is there im partial to any drug i dont have to inject to...so..yea..if i get anything ive earned it.

the only thing that really frightens me is becoming a paraplegic (or in some way similarily incapacitated) the day i need someone to wipe my ass for me i hope they push me off a cliff or something (wich i told my misses to do should it happen...doubt she will tho..)

(this being because my dad had an illness that ate his muscles and nerves over the years and its hard to not see what that does to the people you love)

The thing about the human brain is that most of what you feel in any situation actually happens after the event itself. If you get shot, it takes a minute for your brain to process the fact that you just got shot, and it should be telling you to feel pain. for that reason I don't fear death. I don't believe we exist after we die, and if I'm correct my death means nothing to me. If I can't exist to regret or "feel" my death, whatever I'm feeling before I die will simply end. No fuss, no pain, no worry, just nothing. Which is fine by me.

As for something like cancer or other diseases/injuries, yes the possibility is very real but knowing that I feel it would only double my losses to worry about it right up until it actually happens. If I'm going to get cancer, so be it. I'll with that when it happens, I'll not waste time worrying about it.

Where's the "no and I don't really care if I get hurt" option? I smoked for years so I accept cancer, I've had my skin sliced open enough that it's just an annoyance at worst. I broke my nose in high school (tripped, fell, skidded a few feet on my face) but wanted to stay in school because I loved the class I was running to at the time.

Uh, no?

I'm a healthy young individual that takes reasonably good care of himself and avoids stupid risks (not all risks, just those that cannot be justified, such as getting intoxicated or not wearing safety gear where needed). Life is too short as it is, worrying unnecessarily about nasty situations with low odds of occurring only makes it shorter.

No. If it happens it happens. Not much you can do about it. This is from someone that worked in London at the height of the IRA bombings in which there was a bomb alert on the trains every other day. Also was on the train to work during the 7th July bombings. You just cant let that stuff stop you living life. I would rather not dwell on stuff i cant change, better to ensure you can cross a road without getting run over. :)

No. The only real consequence of anything like cancer is dying. Death stopped scaring me a long time ago.
