GW2's lack of subscriptions means it may sell as many copies as WoW, but people will just play both

i think it'll be a far better game, but then what do I know, I've never played WoW.

Of course Guild Wars 2, you silly.

In all seriousness, economically speaking, nobody will ever beat WoW.

But in gameplay, GW1 was (is) already better than WoW and GW2 will be just a thousand times better.

I say Guild Wars 2, first one was great but I got a little frustrated at the level 20 level cap. Anet said the cap would be raised, the archetype healer-class is being removed in favor of set healer abilities(in other words, every class can heal themselves and do not need a healer, they have a set healer skill making it easier to build teams), the game looks BEAUTIFUL, you can interact with the environment in some pretty dynamic ways, and the races are pretty cool as well as the lore and story behind it.

The level cap is 80.

GW2 will redefine MMOs, but it won't beat WoW's numbers, purely because it HAS those numbers. Those numbers won't suddenly drain away.

Isnt rift just WoW with shinier graphics? People are not going to leave WoW to play wow, even if there are a few mechanical tweaks.

I'm almost certain GW2 will be the better game, hell I think GW1 is vastly superior but it takes more than simply being better to take over.

If anything is going to take a lot of WoW's user base and keep it, it's going to be "Old Republic". If it fails, we're not going to see it happen in the near future.

The free-to-play model of Guild Wars means that it's not going to be able to compete in the same area as WoW because by definition it can't maintain a costly infrastructure without a constant influx of cash.

Let's see...

A game made by a company that knows how to make the most popular games of their genres, multiple times over, without fail... that understands the genre, and has built the most successful MMO ever...

vs...

...a sequel made by the company that made Guild Wars.

Yeah. [sarcasm]totally a tie[/sarcasm].

I like NCSoft, I really do, but... no, GW2 is not going to be a WoW killer.
NCSoft is the producer, not the developer. ArenaNet is, and the only game they ever made besides Guild Wars 1 is GW2.
Thanks, tips!

In other news, NO!!! REALLY!?! and finally, that just proves my point.

Given that an MMO is concidered a monumental success if it can hold one tenth of WoW's subscriber base, the question becomes, do you honestly see GW2 getting a million players, when GW1 hasn't even come close to that mark?

GW isn't bad... but... really!?! Come on, people.

I really don't think it's possible for a new game to compete with World of Warcrafts polish. Having 3 expansions under its' belt, WoW has gone through some pretty monumental changes, most for the better. This has caused them to have tremendous success, something that simply can't be paralleled by a brand new product. It can't compare to the volume of content or the experience gained from having a very strong title for the past 6 years.

No one will topple World of Warcraft. It can only slowly kill itself through stupid decisions and neglect at this point.

Also, free online cannot be compared to payed monthly subscription as the free online will always have more comers than the more expensive monthly subscription.

The amount of misinformation is almost impressive. Does anybody bother looking at the games they are commenting anymore?

1. NCsoft is NOT developing GW2, Arenanet is. NCsoft has no direct influence on the game, they just provide the money.

2. Guildwars 2 is nothing like Guildwars 1, seriously.

3. A monthly fee is NOT necessary to maintain an MMO and develop new content. In fact, little of the subscription money is funneled back into development.

4. Being a BuyToPlay game, Guildwars2 is NOT in direct competition with any subscription MMO and there is therefore no "competition" to win, aside from making money for the investors and developers.

I think Guild Wars 2 has a lot of potential and from what I remember, it's very pretty but I wouldn't put anything up against WoW before it's even released. I'd say the more they try to be original and deviate from what WoW has set as an apparent standard the better they'll do.

Uh, Guild Wars has sold at least 6 million copies. And since it's free to play, there are no subscribers. People can and do leave and come back whenever they feel like it, particularly when an expansion comes out, and it doesn't hurt the game at all. (As will be the case with GW2.)

On top of that, GW1 was received extremely well. It's still one of the highest rated MMOs out there.

And finally, GW2 is going to be very, very different from GW1. It has vastly more mainstream appeal.

I'm not a fan of WoW. I played it (after putting up with 2 years of my roommates nagging me to play) and felt like I was being cheating out of money and a lot of my time.

However, the difficulty of this questions is about the same as "is the sky blue?"

May I add a game that may not be rereleased into America or anywhere but Korea into the competition?

Hellgate. Fucking. London.

I only found out about this game months after it stopped being supported and the company went under but this game seems like it has everything... This is sheer speculation and I never played it, not even sure if it is the same type of game but from what i understand it was an MMORPG. Hellgate Ressurection would be the "WoW killer" in my opinion, at least for me (3 year WoW addict, 3 lvl 85's over 250 accumulated days played)
