Let's see...

A game made by a company that knows how to make the most popular games of their genres, multiple times over, without fail... that understands the genre, and has built the most successful MMO ever...

vs...

...a sequel made by the company that made Guild Wars.

Yeah. [sarcasm]totally a tie[/sarcasm].

I like NCSoft, I really do, but... no, GW2 is not going to be a WoW killer.
NCSoft is the producer, not the developer. ArenaNet is, and the only game they ever made besides Guild Wars 1 is GW2.
Thanks, tips!

In other news, NO!!! REALLY!?! and finally, that just proves my point.

Given that an MMO is concidered a monumental success if it can hold one tenth of WoW's subscriber base, the question becomes, do you honestly see GW2 getting a million players, when GW1 hasn't even come close to that mark?

GW isn't bad... but... really!?! Come on, people.

Uh, Guild Wars has sold at least 6 million copies. And since it's free to play, there are no subscribers. People can and do leave and come back whenever they feel like it, particularly when an expansion comes out, and it doesn't hurt the game at all. (As will be the case with GW2.)
And yet Guild Wars didn't -dent- WoW. A lot of people who bought it, never played it again. Current players are considerably less, less than a million.

Consider that that's 6 million total paid accounts made vs over 12 million current subscribers which doesn't account for total paid accounts.

That number is meaningless in a discussion of whether GW2 will be a 'wow-killer'. Nor is that even an appropriate term? GW1 wasn't even a WoW-tickler.

On top of that, GW1 was received extremely well. It's still one of the highest rated MMOs out there.
To give you an idea of what that means... 'well received' means that it has a current player base of over 100,000 generally. EQ was 'well received.' City of Heroes was 'well received.' Which is fine, and I wish them success.

"Well Receieved" Is the green 'participation' ribbon at sports day. It means you showed up. The competition here is WoW. Seriously. WoW.

A more appropriate discussion is 'Do we think this game will survive its first year?' I think it will. And that is what 'Well Received' gets you. You don't die.

And finally, GW2 is going to be very, very different from GW1. It has vastly more mainstream appeal.
So? It's still a sequal to a game that didn't dent the competition that a lot of deluded 'hypesters' are saying it will kill.

Seriously, dream on. It isn't going to happen, and if it does happen, it won't be anything quick. Talk about wow-killers when they get past their first year. Most MMOs don't even do that.

I know there are a lot of die hard WoW fans out there, but WoW (at least in my eyes) is kinda dull. It's' travel to point X kill this many (insert name of enemies here), and you either go raiding for gear to do MORE raiding or grinding(grind is the bane of gaming!).
ALL MMORPGs are like that. Not just WoW. GW2 won't kill WoW.

WoW will kill itself. GW2 will attract alot of people though.

My opinion:
I played WoW for years, it's ruining itself with poor story, that they keep changing.

Unbalanced classes they're trying to fix. Accomplishing nothing but upsetting the player base over changes.

Changing the games endgame difficulty from casual to the opposite, for some classes that is. Which removes a lot of content many people want to experience, but just can't.

The player base is becoming very elitist through add-ons. Most requiring 3rd party programs such as Ventrillo or Teamspeak to play in Raids.

You may think WoW is bland but we know very well by this point that millions of people think it's worth £8 every month just to be a part of. While GW2 does look like it could be doing some smart things, so many MMOs have promised before that they're going to be a completely original experience and be the WoW-killer. I just don't believe that GW2 can come close to killing Blizzard's legacy.

You're incredibly naive if you think NCSoft provides money without having any influence on the game, no matter what the Arenanet hype-department might admit to.

The only thing that can kill WoW is Blizzard themselves, hopefully with a Starcraft-related MMO instead of just poor developer decisions (/glances in SoE's direction).

I like to think that someday we'll get an MMO that's completely different that anything we've seen before, unfortunately no company is willing gamble that much money when they can get a safe return just making a WoW variation. Guild wars 2 will NOT outsell WoW in a million years, doesn't mean it won't be a massive success though, heres hoping :)
I do hope you realize that that's exactly what GW2 is trying to do: be an MMO that's completely different from anything we've seen before, and nothing at all like a WoW variation. They're the company that's willing to take that gamble.
Notice how I said MMO not MMORPG, yes Guild wars will be a revolution in MMORPG terms but who's to say we can't have good quality MMO shooters or racing games or TBS, doesn't necessarily have to be an RPG but sadly major publishers seem to be ignoring this as the risk outweighs the likely reward.

World Of Warcraft was old when it came out, now it's a relic. It will lose, because that's how market works - sooner or later it'll have to die, and Guild Wars 2 is new, pretty and shiny - it'll basically outlive WoW.

In precisely what way has WoW aged poorly? It's growing in subscriber base, having topped 12 million active subscribers. WoW has currently outlived quite a few more recent games, so I really don't understand why it would start dying now.

There will be no vs situation since GW2 will follow its predecessor as being buy game play free (unless Anet has changed plans from last time i shown intrest in whole thing)
Thus owning GW2 does not kick wow out of picture since if you wish to buy time for Wow no problem since you wont lose anything when having GW2 on computer.

And anyway whats the big deal with people having the lust to go OMG THIS VS THIS.

And i wont vote since both can easily co-exists.

It depends on how you define win or lose. Blizzard has a very loyal fanbase, and the type of player to play WoW is probably the type to not play much else or look elsewhere (it's not like they could afford to buy anything else with the subscription fee anyway). So really, Blizzard only loses subscribers when they get bored, not when another game gets released.

As such, at most Guild Wars 2 could get enough of a following that it's the preferred choice over World of Warcraft for people choosing an MMORPG to get into, and World of Warcraft won't lose as a result, but if Guild Wars 2 consistently brings in new players then that's a win for it.

Also, keep in mind the different revenue models. The more people picking up the game, the more money ArenaNet makes, whereas the more people sticking to the game, the more money Blizzard makes. Blizzard can win by keeping its userbase steady, or slowly climbing up to 13 million and then 14 million users. Guild Wars 2 could win by shipping 10 million copies in the first year (although that's probably stretching it).

This might seem like I'm calling it a tie, but it's not necessarily that either, because we won't really be able to tell. GW2 is doing a good transition from GW, so it'll probably be the first sequel MMORPG to be successful, but WoW has way too much inertia to be knocked off.

WoW is huge and old. It became popular because it was easy and has gotten easier over time to cater to newer gamers who lack the time to plow to the good parts at the end, or the initiative to research how to get through a puzzle or tricks used by a boss. it is getting old, however, and very little has changed in terms of looks other than adding more floating glowing crystals or Steampunk gizmos.

GW2 will never topple WoW, nor will any game until the million or so people who have max-level characters covered head to toe with epics are willing to abandon all the time spent getting there. How likely is that to happen?

I say it will be a tie. WoW will keep plugging along and GW2 will end up with its own crowd of fanboys/girls. There will be some bashing between the two, but that happens in every game.

its more like GW2 VS Rift :p
Rift has already hurt wow so guild war 2 is just another nail as well as the other 10 mmos this decade.

Looking at the line of so-called "WoW killers", each and every one supposedly THE thing that was totally different and going to murderize the king of the heap... yeah. I don't think anything will change anytime soon.

1st of all your criticism against wow--every goddamn MMO does that, secondly WOW is starting at 12 million money-shitting subscribers, guild wars is starting with two fat guys and the one person who understands their lore.

The only thing that can kill WoW is WoW. WoW would have to seriously tick off it's fan base before they'll look to another mmo, especially since it's more likely than not that WoW will eventually incorporate things that other mmos have done into itself and do them better. I'm sorry, but that's the way it's been thus far.

I do, however, believe that other mmos can exist along side it, otherwise Guild Wars wouldn't still be around. It's just that WoW is really really good at what it does, plain and simple. The only mmo that I could see truly rivaling WoW in subscription numbers is something that is totally different from WoW, DC Universe Online is a good example, but it's just a matter of time before they come out with Call of Duty/ Halo MMO FPS.

If pressed into a corner I would say Guild Wars 2, it looks sweet, they are trying out new things for the MMO genre. GW2 looks like a step forward for the MMO genre, removing what puts people off MMO games like heavy grinding and a sub fee, but keeping the things we all love like a massive fleshed out world.

So yeah in short if Anet do what they have promised they will beat if not deal a significant blow to WoW.

I'm not going to get in to a GW2 vs. WoW dissection, each have their own merits and disadvantages.

GW and GW2 will always get my money because my belief is that if you have to pay a subscription you shouldn't have to pay for the game in the first place. It's essentially the publisher having their cake and eating it.

As GW and GW2 are subscription free I'm able to play when I can and not worry about it. If I was paying a sub then it would always bug me that I was throwing my money away.
Your wouldn't rent a car for a month only to use it twice would you?

I don't think it will. A lot of the people playing WoW have gotten "comfortable" and will probably not leave what they know for some new areas that will in most likely either play like WoW or very similar. If it doesn't then they might just sidestep the "aggravation" of learning something new and again stay with what they already know, the community they already have etc. It took them "forever" to get where they are in WoW why would they risk getting hooked to another game too and either waste all the money they spent creating their experience in WoW (yes I realize the irony of that) or wasting double the money to enjoy two experiences that would be rather similar in the end?

Obviously they have influence, they DO fund the whole thing, but they are known for giving Anet a very long leash to work with and trust them to churn out great games. They didn't touch GW1 game design whatsoever and probably won't touch GW2 either.

So yeah, as far as game play and design, NCsoft has next to no involvement. Marketing, pricing, etc is another story.
