Poll: H.A.W.X. Demo really disappoints

I was kinda still expecting this game to be really fun, like IL2-Sturmovik or Freelancer. These were both fun as a sim and an arcade as far as flight sims go. Okay, maybe I'm stretching it a little with Freelancer. But I hope you get the point. They are fun. However, H.A.W.X. was anything but fun. At least the demo wasn't. But I'm sure it's only a prelude of worse things to come.

Aaaaanyways, the reason why I put this game into my 'disappointing box' is because of the POV I was forced to contend with when the flight assistance is turned off. I can barely see where my plane if pointing half the time, much less see where I'm going. And the assisted flights are no better. For some reason, the dev's felt that they needed to castrate the maneuverability to better differentiate the two flight modes. Hardly a recipe for fun.

But then again, I suppose the whole point is that they were trying to make a game that was really pretty and cinematic, in which case, I give it a grudging B+. Not too bad, but still not as nice as it could have been.

But being pretty doesn't help make it playable for me. Not, not me. Nuh uh! If I can't control the damn plane, then there's not real point playing it, is there?

I'm gonna hold out for Sturmovik 2.

Alright, that's enough from me. What did YOU think of the demo?

same thing with Halo Wars, the demo on that game put me to sleep, which is pretty sad

I think exactly the same as you do [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.89113?page=1].

I found this to be dreadful because of the assistance off mode.

I thought it was pretty epic, but putting into the "advanced" style mode, meant that the camera went mega awkward which I didn't like...(Forgive me if you can actually change it...)

The control scheme irritated me, and would not actually allow me to change it to what I wanted. Turns out, mouse x and y axes are only bindable by the "default" setting, which is not what I want. I could probably go into some .ini files and change it manually, but it isn't worth the bother when I have Freespace 2 with the SCP engine.

It's not biased... just very, very polarised =P

As for the demo, I dunno - I found myself enjoying it more than any flight sim I've ever played, which doesn't say much of course, since I generally dislike flight sims all the way.

The Assistance Off mode, however, is what made it fun for me - and that's what sets it apart from every other generic flight sim out there. For once I can actually get a feel for exactly what I'm doing, and it looks good too.

The difficulty for it is artificial though, true - it certainly defeats any notion of 'simulation' on its part, but as pure gameplay, I think it's a win - mastering the flying of your craft (particularly on Expert control difficulty) is quite fun and rewarding. As soon as you go back to the cockpit, it becomes dull, Generic Flight Sim #132

Mind, of course, this is the opinion of, as I said, someone who generally just doesn't get flight/space sims in the least.

HAWX is a useless game. It's the first game I've ever played where using the sight to aim is a bad thing. And the far shots are god awful because you can't really judge how close you are to something (especially the ground)

This is one of the most biased polls I've ever seen.

I dislike this as much as you dislike H.A.W.X.

On a related note, I greatly disliked "Off mode" for the reasons you did and because it makes no sense. I shoulden't need assistance to look through my own eyes! That aside, "off-mode" doesen't appear to be mandatory for the rest of the game and "on-mode" was quite fluid for me. I don't know what control scheme you used, but I used expert as I've beaten the ace combat series on ace (a fact that I'm quite proud of, actually.) and I coulden't be more happy with the game, provided you don't use the E.R.S all the time (I didnt use it at all) the game is quite fun and I enjoyed it.

That aside, I think your poll is completely biased and refuse to answer it and though I understand your opinion on the game, I don't respect it or you because you insist upon forcing it on others with your poll.

I thought the gameplay was great, I absolutely adored the landscapes, but the thing that really ruined it for me was the pointless Americana.

I'll second this, I could feel the hatred coming off just reading the title
Ha ha... I guess it does seem biased. Guess I shouldn't be doing polls at 2 o'clock in the morning. If I had given it much more though, I probably would've fleshed it out more and put in as much love for it as much as my irk.

I understand that it's only my opinion and hardly hope to sway anyone's decision to or from buying this game (or continuing to play the demo).

In any case, for my part, I'm still trying to love the game demo by playing it a little more. I probably still haven't gotten a hang of it. Maybe.

I could hardly force the poll on anyone to really... I would've had everyone who came to the Escapist website at knife point if I really wanted to do that.

The loss of your respect is pretty much inconsequential. I only did this for fun and not to farm for responses.

Quick question do you think most fighter pilots are asked to stall in mid-air and then recover as part of their training?

If I'm not mistaken, I think they do. How else would they learn? :p

I mean in a real aircraft, whilst flying with an instructor i can understand them doing it through a simulator but puting the pilot in a position where realistically he has a fairly high chance of killing himself ,and the operator does not come across as a wise move and besides i`d expect them to bail out if the plane stalled

Why didn't you provide us with a middle ground option? I quite enjoyed it, but I didn't think it was any better or worse than I thought it would be.

It is hardly going to be the best game of the year. However aside from a few bugs with graphics drivers crashing, I really enjoyed it. Even assistance off mode which I admittedly was dreading was kind of fun. If you go into it expecting realism of course your going to be disappointed. This is after all a current Tom Clancy game and not a classic one. I will definitely be picking it up when its released.
