I think it's scarier with sound low or off because , your walking down a hallway and an enemies hit you from behind making your controller vibrate with no music cues or sounds the monster makes

depending on the mood i'm in... but what defines a "scary game?" I mean with the amount of "scary movies" out there (and i mean just the new and crappy gore movies started by Saw) i'm really curious what the new definition of "scary" is nowadays.

Personally after reading what is there to read of BERSERK, i think that shit is a little bit scary... i mean have any of you read the manga past the Hawks?

Very creepy and eerie... and whats up with the rape in that series?

With a friend.
I made my friend play Left 4 Dead (which any gamer will know as not being scary), and she would barely move after she killed a zombie.
I had to press down 'W' to make her move forward.
She also screamed when a hunter pounced her, which was hilarious.
This might have been slightly scary had the lights been off, but they weren't, and we were surrounded by shouting people, destroying any immersion she might have had. XD

For the most part I don't care for scary games. Doom 3 I played in the dark (the lights in the barracks were off for most of the day) with headphones (because, presumably there were people sleeping), in the middle of a "war". It also delivered the most consistant scary experience I've had in gaming.

Condemned had it's moments but most of the time I rarely felt vulnerable and the game only seemed to deliver startling moments.

I have to admit, i still haven't finished Dead Space....
I got scared shitless once, and took the CD out and put it in my little collection of games that i have not finished.

DONT LAUGH AT ME...
Dead Space managed to startle me but it never did truly seem scary. It seemed far too predictable and my character seemed too well equipped to ever be scared. Body of a necromorph on the ground and I didn't put it there? It's almost certainly a trap. Necromorph shadow around the corner? Nothing's going to be there, but there almost CERTAINLY is going to be something behind you.

Even the plasma cutter seemed like a freakin' death cannon.

I usually play with the lights off by myself. When I have my bros over or a friend then we play together.

Just here for the sights. Lights on, sound at average levels, playing alone.

My reasoning is that I have no intention of helping the game scare me. If it's truly scary, it'll still draw me in and freak me out, even with the lights on. If the game requires total darkness to be remotely scary, then it's likely just stuff popping out of the floor and no real fear... Dead Space, I'm looking at you.
