For me it's my favourite gaming series (guess where I stand on the poll-list, he he). It contains the best soundtrack (HL2), best atmosphere (HL1), best characters (HL2, G-Man is also my favourite gaming character) and one of better stories and storytelling (looking at you, Fallout 1, 2 and BioShock).

Though the Gravity Gun is nice, it just aren't as flexible in the killing catagory as my beloved M4A1 SOPMOD.

Or, you could just wait for the Black Mesa mod for the PC, wich is a complete remake of Half-Life 1 in source graphics.

I didnt even understand the game. some mean people in masks just burst into my appartment building and started killing everyone.

I was all "WTF! Scrubs is on, cant we do this later?"

And they we all

"No"

They were just so rude.

I love the games because I think the setting and general atmosphere are cool; and I never really liked super realistic FPS games anyway.

When the first two were released, they had the best graphics and tightest gameplay around. (Half Life 2's graphics still look better than games released now, and that game is almost five years old.)

The characters are realistic looking (from Half Life 2 on) and are truly enjoyable and believable. You actually begin to care for them as the story progresses. (I swear, at the end of Half Life 2:Episode 2 when
Eli died, I thought I was going to cry.)

And of course, there's the Gravity Gun.

The games are all around fun and really enjoyable. It still remains one of the few greatly written games out there and one of the only FPS's that has a memorable & meaningful storyline.

I'm in the same boat as you. Modding community maybe? Ive had much more fun fucking with Gmod than i have with any half life game
I've heard a lot of good things about the modding. I've seen several posts here saying it's easy, and that's why they enjoy it. I have the 360 version though, so I don't know personally.

I heard that they're House fans. I was so happy when the game was like "Here's a submachine gun go kill the meanies kthxbailol" ..They understand me so much.

The designers that helped make Half-Life and/or its sequels should burn. What's wrong with it? Well, EVERYTHING.

Are the graphics visually appealing? No.
Is the music catchy? No.
Is the story compelling? No.
Are the characters well voice-acted? No.
Are the physics realistic? No.
Are the physics beneficial to gameplay? No.
Is there variety in the overall gameplay? No.
Are the controls fluid? No.

Are the puzzles convoluted? Yes.
Is the overall game generic? Yes.
Is the overall game cryptic and convoluted? Yes.
Is the overall game too hard? Yes.

Is the game boring? Yes. Frustrating? Yes. Fun? No.
I can disagree with some of these. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbvWObwoi70 I enjoy this song quite a lot from the soundtrack. And I think the puzzles are supposed to be convoluted. That's why they're puzzles. The difficulty can be lowered in the start menu, and you can just use the overpowered weapons all the time as their ammo is plentiful. Graphics are years old. They have an excuse. Control fluency.. Well.. Yea they suck to an extreme. I wish they had a thing where you can map the entire controller function to your own custom preferance.. But there's Dog and a muscle car. So yea.

I enjoyed it after playing it again, but at first I didn't like it because I got such bad motion sickness, I had to lay down for 3 hours before I could play again.

The Half-Life series is basically a standard modern first person shooter with puzzle aspects. Big deal.

However... (think before you hit that reply button and quote me out of context)

The Half-Life series is a great deal deeper and well thought out than most games it can be compared to, it has a likeable main character and a purpose for killing all who oppose you. The reason it can be technically classified as a standard game is that it basically defined the complexity that can be portrayed in an FPS game without making it overly complicated or too artsy. It wasn't the first FPS out (not by a long shot), but it is the best modern example of what can be done with the FPS platform.

Also, nerds (myself included) love the idea of a research physicist being able to duke it out with aliens and other assorted tough guys with little more than his wits and a crowbar.

Edit: Just re-read all this and it comes off a little fanboy-ish. I'll qualify that by saying: I don't, nor have I ever, owned or had Half-Life installed on my computer or any other console. I have played it, viewed others play it and generally been exposed to it and find it to be decent. Which is about as much as I would ever expect from an FPS. It's definately a good example of an FPS, but I wouldn't call myself a fan by any means.

Pancakes is just in there for total randomness. There isn't really a reason behind it.

I thought it was okay, but nothing too special.
The awesomest thing was probably writing your name on a wall with bullet holes.
Oddly satisfying for some reason.

Of course not, we all know that the Pancake-Police arrests anyone who tries to deny the divine greatness that is pancakes.

I openly admit I am a fanboy...but I think I have a valid reason:

Before playing half life 2 and it's subsequent games, I hadn't been playing much due to being out of money after getting my Gaminy laptop. The most enjoyment I had gotten was Spore and Burnout and Assassins Creed, all of which I completed and had started to go off a little. I was in desperate need of a new game to get addicted to...maybe an FPS as I hadn't actually played one in a while.

I came here, and got reccommended half life 2. I looked it up and it looked impressive, So i bought the orange box 'cause I had become obsessed with Portal.

After portal, I turned on Half life 2.
WOW.
That's all I said after an hour of gameplay.
Upon everyone's reccomendations I knew it was going to be good, but for some reason the realism and the physics engine and, well, everything (THE STORYLINE) completely gripped me like no other game before it. It was the first game in absolutely years I had fully not wanted to stop playing, and have played about 3 times through.

Then there's the mods: Endless fun with Smod, Korin mod and R&D, and GARRY'S MOD!!!

Once you have it, there is endless extensions-and so I love half life 2 specifically because it makes all this extra possible, and the game itself...is wow.

Even more impressive-something that made me impressed even more-I have a friend who has always, but ALWAYS hated FPS games. He saw me playing half life 2 and demanded that he watch me play the whole thing through, and the episodes. He is now going to buy it.

IT CONVERTED THE BIGGEST HATER OF FPS I KNOW!!! AND HE HASN'T EVEN PLAYED IT YET!!!

I just owe valve so much with half life 2, and therefore I have no reason to not like half life 2 in ANY way, and openly admit myself a fanboy.

Half-Life 2 (episodes included) is one of the few games I can play over and over.
Also: I love how easy it is to make maps for it...
