So, it's just over a month since Halo Anniversary was released. My question is, is anybody still playing it?
From my perspective, and a bit of XBL Friends List detective-work, it's been quite some time since I've seen a game have such a rate of abandonment. My brother and I decided to blast through it on Legendary - to begin with we hooked up on Live and played most nights, then it was a couple of times a week, and then we got to The Library and just lost interest. My friends list shows similar results. A lot of people - who are usually completionists and 100% Achievement fanatics - have just stopped playing halfway through the game.
I hate to say it, but Halo Anniversary just doesn't stand up as a "good" game any more. I played the original back in 2001 - correction, I lived in the original for several years starting in 2001 - and back then the sheer scale, the freedom, and the immersion all captivated me. I would spend hours exploring levels, looking for Easter Eggs, trick-jumping vehicles, and just generally enjoy playing the most atmospheric and well-crafted FPS available at the time.
But now? I find myself rushing through the levels to get them over and done with. The blatently copy-pasted sections of architecture confuse and annoy me in equal measure. The controls feel clunky, floaty and unresponsive. To put it bluntly, playing this game is ruining my nostalgia, and I suspect thats why other people have been putting it on the shelf too.
The only component of the game that I play regularly now is the Halo Reach map pack that was included. Sad, really.
So - did you get Halo Anniversary? I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts, and to see if this "nostalgia-destroying" effect is widespread.
