I would have to say no. Movies based off of games rarely turn out to be good.
We should ask "why" instead of just going with "Oh well, it didn't work the first time so we shouldn't touch it".

What makes game-based movies so awful? Many games present a formidable setting and set of characters, basically the same elements most successful movies have. I can understand the difficulty in terms of following the same protagonist from the games, but does it really have to be so? You can always have a completely different protagonist that fits well into the series, and maybe mention the protagonist from games a few times or have a surprise entrance once...

Bleh.

No, it shouldn't.
Video game adaptations are rarely good, that's for one.
There is a seeming over-abundance of those (even Heavy Rain might get one), that's two.
If there is one, think about it. It's clearly going to be an origin movie (and I think that has already been covered by the books) or it's going to be a rehash of the story of the games, or it's going to have fuck-all to do with Halo.
There won't be any new story because no video game movie had ever assumed that the audiences know the basic premise and, thus, tried to tell the whole story from the beginning.
But if it does happen, I hope they get
a) The already suggested Distric 9 director Neil Blomkamp
b) The director of the new Tron movie

I personally have no idea why anyone would want Michael Bay to direct anything. I mean, yes he makes things explode and in Halo 3, things explode. But then doesn't necessarily make a good movie.

Maybe, but I'd prefer a prequel before they lunge straight into the events of the first game. And when I say maybe, I mean 'Only if it's a mindless summer action film'. If anyone tries anything else, it will go badly, badly wrong.
Well, you stole pretty much everything I was going to say, bar the 'mindless action flick' bit.

I didn't even think of the storyline TBH, but hey, since when have the Halo fans paid any attention to the storyline apart from:
1. People that really didn't like the multiplayer
2. People that never used the multiplayer becasue of what group 1 said

Mind you, that makes up a extremely miniscule population of the Halo playing population.

But here's how it should go, using the games and books as markers:
1. Halo: Reach/Fall of Reach (book)
2. Halo: Combat Evolved
3. Halo: First Strike (book)
4. Halo 2
5. Halo: Ghosts of Onyx (book)
6. Halo 3

Not sure where Halo Wars should go, if it even SHOULD be in ther ein the first place. Halo ODST doesn't really fit in with the 'storyline' the movie would take, which would follow the Spartans, Marines, Covenant and whoever/whatever else and whatnot on the Halos, killing crap, messing up plans and making massive nuisances of themselves and each other, for their respective governments to either congratulate or try and have murdered.

Also, get the guys behind District 9 (Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp) working on it, and it will be good. Just KEEP UWE BOLL AWAY FROM IT!!!
I cannot stress that bit enough.

And as an endnote, I'm not a big fan of Halo.

Only if it was the story of Reach, but seeing as their doing that in Game form, I can't see that happening.

So, on that note. No, I don't want to see a Halo movie.

Mother. Freaking. Yes.

As long as it's done as Sir MiracleOfSound said.

I want Neil Blompkamp as director, Martin O'Donnell as the music composer, and the Bungie team as Producers/Writers!

Perfection.

For everyone suggesting Neill Blomkamp as Director, sorry:

After the initial failure of making a Halo Movie (to wich Blomkamp was attached as director), he said he would refuse if it would be offered to him again.

He's currently working on a Sci Fi Movie set on a different planet (it's not a District 9 Sequel, nor an Avatar one ;) ) and likely does District 10 next, according to rumors and statements of people like Shalto Copley

I really wish the Halo movie had been released during the Halo 3 hype of 2007-2008. Also, the movie should've gone where video games couldn't, which would be recounting the origins of Master Chief and the SPARTAN II program. They already would've had a basic screenplay with Eric Nylund's "The Fall of Reach."

Part of me wants to give it the go ahead because there is a depth to the universe that people don't really give the series credit for and as a huge epic sci fi trilogy even if it just ends up being a science fiction actioner it would at least be a decent sci fi actioner.
I mean the plot devices are there, the history of the UNSC/Covenant, the Spartan Program, the war between Forerunner and Flood, the human and Covenant war, the discovery of Halo itself, the Covenant civil war and the final battle at the Ark.
There is a lot of ground that can be covered in just the trilogy alone, the seeds for a damn good movie are there.

However given that most of the time in the games it took about seven hours on average to put everything in and the most the average epic will go is three hours it does strike me that you would need a damn good director with an understanding/love of the franchise and the budget and creative skills that could help bring it alive.

Neil Blomkamp and Peter Jackson originally seemed to be the best choice for this but given it seems unlikely they will end up doing it I am not convinced that it's a good idea. Point is, a good movie can be found in Halo but you would need the right person to put it together and the huge budget that could make it glorious.

Nah.

Take the money & put it into the development of Episode 3, I'm sure a lot more people would be happier.
agreed, valve is awesome because their attitude is not getting a lot of money fast by making a bad game really fast (i'm not talking about halo or anything in particular), instead they take their time and when their game comes out it just is fucking awesome.

Peter Jackson should stay away from this trainwreck. Get Michael Bay on it. Epic battles? Ok...maybe Ridley Scott. I mean, it's not like the Halo series is renowned for brilliant dialogue, deep characters and emotional attachment to said characters. That's my opinion anyway. SO, if they should do it right, they might as well make it spectacular. I'd be...slightly happy.
have you read the books?

I'd rather they work on a game movie whose plot wasn't a patchwork ripoff of other sci-fi movies instead.

Yes they should, because I think it would be non-stop awesome
No I don't think they should because I think it would ruin the franchise, and piss of fanboys and probably not very faithful to the games/books
Arrrghhhh my brain

Maybe a Halo story, not about Master Chief
Like a Reach movie?

I used to think yes, But after watching halo legends it really opened my eyes to the story and I mean damn. The elites are samurai now. Is this stuff the actual canon of the universe or were they kidding me. I feel no need to read the books, Ill maybe hunt down the comics, but at the end of the day.

I just don't think the halo gamers know is what halo actually is. Its like they took the time to cut story for fun and went back in to fill the gaps. so if you want to mix general game to film badness with a plot that people who just loved and played the games would be baffled by go ahead.

Do they really need to make a Halo movie? I've only played the third one the whole way through, but it did a pretty good job of telling a story.

Remember that the original Halo director, Neill Blomkamp, ended up filming an original universe instead, which turned out to be no bad thing. (Although, ironically, District 9 ended up being as overrated as Halo 3.)

I've love to see one made. But I think it would totally divide the halo community. I say no, just for the sake of not pissing off a bunch of people. Its just asking for a flame war the likes of which mortals have never seen.
