So, I used to play Halo: Reach with friends back when it first came out. At their houses. With their Xbox 360s. Now I have my own 360, and I'm considering getting a copy for myself. It's going to suck having to start all over again, but it'll be worth it. So to you Halo: Reach players... Is it still busy? Or is it a ghost town over there?

Also, any tips for my return to the fold? I've been playing Halo since the early days, and I am still total rubbish.

It's been a few weeks since I played, but Halo's community doesn't die easily. As far as tips go, control your shots with the DMR and the assault rifle from distance. Close range, let em have it with the AR.

You can always, ALWAYS, get a game going on matchmaking. Depending on your internet speed, you'll never be waiting more than 10 seconds to find a game. And it'll be that way until far after Halo 4 comes out.

Think of it this way- the Halo 2 servers were still being used quite a bit until last year.

Community is as busy as it's always been. I've never once had trouble finding a game for any multiplayer type.
As far as tips...The87Italians is talking sense. Don't spam; control your shots, use controlled bursts with automatic weapons instead of spray'n pray, and there is no shame in taking cover. :p

I don't play it but I know that Halo has a really dedicated community so I doubt it's a ghost town, in fact it probably has more people playing it that a lot of newer games.

I suspect it's had a resurgence. I booted it up yesterday to play with my mate. Seemed like we found a game a lot faster. We usually have to wait a while.

Armour lock still fills me with a terrible rage. Especially when the guys totally screwed and he just uses it to make you wait for your kill in the faint hope he will be saved.

Edit: I'm one of those fags who don't read the op. My tip is to try to restrain yourself. If your dieing a lot hold back and snipe at enemies with a dmr or whatever. Don't try to be a close range fighter unless your a lot better than the enemy.

It's the only console game I've ever owned that can reliably put me into a matchmaking game on any mode of my choosing in under a minute. You may already know this, but Halo 3 still gets a buttload of online play, so of course the newest incarnation is going to be perpetually populated. Factor in the constant support (after a year of solid play, I'm still getting into matches with rule sets and levels I've never done before), and you've got my reasoning for why I personally consider Reach's multiplayer to be on par with TF2's.

EDIT: Oh, and tips for getting good? Here's one:

Be an equal-opportunity user of all weapons. If you are bad with a certain weapon, force yourself to use it until you're better with it. Every weapon in the game has its strengths, weaknesses, and intended role; when used with a deep understanding of its mechanics, any weapon can be used to dominate. Think the plasma pistol is garbage? Actually, that little sucker will shred through shields even when firing normally, can EMP vehicles into locking up, and reliably deals damage that nearly puts it on par with the Magnum (except it doesn't lose accuracy).

Also, understand that switching weapons is huge. You aren't allowed to carry two weapons just so you can switch to the other one when the first one is empty. There are weapons that compliment each other enormously. The plasma rifle eats shields like a fat kid goes through a bag of cheetos, and can even take down the shields of multiple enemies in one well-controlled burst, but deals crap damage to health; on the flipside, the DMR is a weapon that takes numerous increasingly-inaccurate shots to down a shield, but as I'm sure you've noticed with the clusters of unfortunate grunts that think numbers will protect them, it can put multiple bullets in multiple heads before the reticule bloom even starts to even matter. Do the math.

I still try to reserve at least 1 evening a week for halo reach, and there are always people on, though I only really play with my friends and their clan members. Your welcome to join, but we don't really play match making or competitive games. Just custom games, in which we mainly have a laugh, no serious gaming. Is what halos all about.

No such thing. Favourite Halo 2 quotes in three, two-- wait. Shit, thought I was on B.net for a minute there.

It's still going strong. There are still thousands playing at any given time, though some of the less-commonly-played playlists can be hard to find a match in past certain hours of the night. But yeah, worth it. Freaking love that game.

What this guy said.

Also, use weapon pick ups. Relying on standard weapons only will get you killed, and boring. Mix it up and show what halo is all about.

Definitely still going, my friends partied up in some online matches last week. Didn't have any problems finding players, though we did have problems in firefight matchmaking when with each game we picked up an extra random player and every time, the player would quit five minutes in. Yeah, extra points for us killing things, but it just seems stupid on how many people join games and quit.

I think it is a symptom of the younger generations. I noticed it in my cousin who is six years younger than me. When we would get into an online match, when he starts falling behind everyone else, he constantly complains and wants to quit and start a different match, while I'm the type of gamer that when I start certain things in games, I not going to stop until I have finished what I have started, doesn't matter if I'm in last place and ten kills behind.

I just played Halo Reach yesterday as a matter of fact! I played a few levels offline though so I have no idea. The last time I did play online though, it was about two or three months ago but I was getting into matches quickly and, with many different people. I assume it's still very active at most, if not all, times of the day. Have fun Spartan!

Short answer: Yes, it's still busy; fluctuations have been happening in this release syste,, but it's still easy to find games in MM, and the Halo community doesn't drop off easily.
Long answer: Read DEEP NNN's most recent population report [http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=1103658].
